Just watched the 2077 demo.

My favorite part was the text along the top of the screen basically apologizing for the state of the game because it's in ALPHAAAAA and not finished yet.

Despite the fact that any 5 seconds of this demo shits all over every single aspect of anything Chris Roberts has ever made in his entire lifetime in aggregate.

Scruffpuff posted:

No plans will change this time. All efforts are to intensify the illusion of the Squadron 42 "game" being a thing that exists. Heavy implications will be made that all Squadron 42 advancements will carry over to the Star Citizen "MMO." For the purposes of pledging, it will be claimed that funding one funds the other, and all the amazing things you see will be in both titles.

There is no development effort being made on the PTU any more - the broken model-viewer hastily released in late 2015 has been pushed as far as it will go. All development efforts and fake gameplay trailers are about Squadron 42 now. The lie hasn't changed on that front - Chris thinks that the money made on Squadron 42 () will fund the super-secret internal plan that will save Star Citizen forever: starting over with a different engine.

Why do this, aside from the loving blatantly obvious? You see, it will make the bad Crytek go away because Squadron 42 is one game, so their claim of multiple games goes away. Also, since nobody pledged for Squadron 42, they pledged for Star Citizen, which is going to use a different engine, then Crytek has no claim to a percentage of the $200 million they stole. Victory due to technicality! A slam dunk case, because judges never consider intent, and always allow the defendant to change the rules on the fly like that, just like in Hollywood Movies.

Chris thinks Squadron 42 will bring in $500 million in fresh cash in the first 2 weeks, and has already started spending that money.

I mostly concur with this assetment.

It may be time to unleash The Pusher!

CIG hasn’t exactly been signaling confidence that OCS will make 3.3. There have been a lot of subtle hints, of the “we are swinging for the fences!” but we might miss! Kind of like ship purchasing for earned credits, which absolutely looks likely to miss. The big incentive CIG has to keep pushing the PU forward is to sell players on housing for whatever money they can wring out of that. That so many Land Claim related targets are on the roadmap suggests how eager Chris and Erin are to tap that.

But Squadron’s hollywood star power roster has barely been exploited. 2016 and 2017 focused backer attentions on Moons! Seedy 3 jacket wearing Tony Sopranos lookalike mission givers! Desert nomads and Sandworms! City wide planets! Squadron got a late appearance in a weirdass cinematic travelogue that needed a big “insert gameplay here” warning through 90% of it. Skywalker and the Onion Knight scored some easy media coverage. But there are so many other big names, some bigger names, that just haven’t been hyped much yet.

Cyberpunk hasn’t got that. Red Dead hasn’t got that. Only Chris would throw a fortune to bring so much Hollywood prestige to his game. If ever there was a time to make that the centerpiece, it’s this year.

Getting what should’ve been his lay-up shot game out will obviously be a nightmare, what with Crytek wanting to get their due and with Squadron now damned to share all the headaches of their living, breathing Frankencode universe. They never should’ve been conjoined, they always should’ve been separate. It could’ve been easy and should’ve been.

Watching Starlancer playthroughs again earlier, and seeing a Squadron-like game built for purpose and looking immersive (for the time) and fun to play (if corny), it really drove home how much Chris lost the plot by adding too much. Even he knows it now and admitted as much. File under: Duh, circa 2015.

I do think we’ll get some pixelporn of future PU goodness. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it include things like “here is what Salvage will look like” because we know Chris has had his team working on “grind up spaceship scrap” visuals so that Reclaimer owners can watch that mechanic at work (and Chris definitely wants to sell more pricey big ships, now and forever.) I’m sure the temptation is there to tease jumpgates too, so that “the expanding microverse” still has some basis for faith. Stanton isn’t close to done, but that’s no reason not to at least nod to the future to come.

Really? Honestly strikes me as a bit Halo-ish. Not a fan of double jumping in MIDAIR. The style is also a bit too "cartoonish" - look aat the proportions of the woman lying on the stretcher - her legs were a good four or five inches too long. All the body proportions are based off of animation, not reality.

As a stylistic game, I believe it will be very fun. But then again, it looks like a typical FPS to me. I say nothing that made me think "Wow! This is a game changer. I've never seen anything like this before."

Its not a WORLD, its an "open world game". Big difference. CIG is not just making a world, but multiple worlds, in star systems. Just not appropriate to compare them.

We've had "open world games" for a LONG time now. I mean seriously, go back to Elder Scrolls 2. Its just the same stuff but taken to much higher levels of detail. Its not really new.

She said she was subjected to too many ads for “buy our ships” during what should’ve been a simple download and test trial. Anecdotal reports of difficulties others had with the trial get discussed. Agreed, just finished watching it also. Very nice looking game, very nice artwork and direction, well thought out enviroment, characters seem very well fleshed out and "alive" even the npcs just there to take up space, nice details all around, generally just very interesting and well put together. Makes CIG's attempts look very old and out of touch.

I 'want' to play Cyberpunk having seen their walkthrough, I want to play it a lot, that's a feeling or desire that SC does not imbue to me.

While I really like the impression of the street crowds, I couldn't help but think, yeah, but all these NPC walking around were programmed to do what they are doing. Can you even interact with half of them? Like you I found the look and feel of the CP2027 lacking in . . . credulity for lack of a better word. It looked like a current generation video game. Very much so. A number of little things that didn't sell it, and actually detracted from what was going on.

quote:

Nothing in the game is networked. One of the biggest issues that the technical side of SC faces it that everything is multiplayer. This makes it vastly more complicated.

The Squardon 42 and even the Arc Corps demos worked very well because they weren't networked at all.

There's also the fact that CIG needed to develop a lot of tech to increase the scale of the game. What CD Projekt Red is doing is super impressive and I'm not trying to take that from them, but CIG isn't just building one massive game world. Their tools have to populate planets and star systems. It takes a lot more work.

I mean, you don't "activate inner thought" for a door. You just press the same button that brings up inner thought and it opens the door with one button. Did you not know that or am I missing a specific door example you're thinking of? Its as easy to use right now as opening a door in a game like Half-Life, just press F. Or whatever keybind.

For those who have invested in the game, especially at a significant level, and played for a while, are you doubting that investment these days? Or are you still confident that SC will be great?

I missed out on Starlancer but have watched some playthroughs. It does make for an interesting compare and contrast, especially next to the Squadron slice. Starlancer seemed pretty eager to set up the plot and throw you right into the action. And the dogfighting still looks pretty solid today all things considered.

The slice just spends an hour avoiding the action and forcing you to instead savor the scenery and cutscenes. (Oh, and the wonderful puzzles!)

Hopefully we’ll still get some Squadron hype reels for CitizenCon. Maybe even with gameplay for a change. Or what passes for it in Roberts mind these days...

Star lancer was pretty fun, but if I remember it had a level about half way through the game where I think you were just transferred to another carrier (your original one was blown up :aaaaa: ) and there was some kind of a time attack thing where you had to save a very weak ship. If I remember it was very hard and failing it just ended the game with a cutscene.

I don't think I got past that, it was very frustrating. It was a long mission, and the last segment had this sudden escort or save us thing, and it was tough. Going through the whole mission to fail at the last part over and over was infuriating.
