Before Holmes-chat is over I'd like to put in a little plug for the 1954 t.v. series - they somehow manage to introduce a problem, work through a solution to it and have some nice characterization and the odd comedy bit within a 27 minute show

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmHgXUJMN1TVtqyVXJ4D3ozPxgwpV-UpQ

The Holmes and Watson are top class.

To fit the thread title, one episode which hasn't aged well is the one where the nice little old lady is revealed to be a serial killer of perfectly innocent young men and when she is found out, she is still presented sympathetically.

Has anyone mentioned Murder By Decree, the 1979 movie directed by Bob Clark (director of Porky's and A Christmas Story) where Holmes and Watson hunt down Jack the Ripper? It's not bad, but that could just be my patriotically forgiving Canadian eyes.

My favourite Holmes pastiche is Kim Newman's Moriarty novel. It's good fun, probably because it's about Moriarty but the main character and narrator is Moran.

There was some mention of him in the Arthur Conan Doyle books that was so hilarious that I've never forgotten the context. It was something like

"Mycroft is a especially large man, at the heart of the British government and possessed of as keen or perhaps greater mind then I, but so lazy he would rather stay at the club and ruminate and make logical guesses and decisions with the information brought to him and possibly be wrong rather then having to go out and determine the truth for himself."

Rhino, you did this to me!

It's probably a combination of nostalgia and the fact that I haven't watched Ren & Stimpy in 20 years but that animation just looks...wrong to me for some reason.

Also when looking it up on the wiki

quote:

Billy West declined to participate in the show, saying that the show was "not funny" and that joining it would have damaged his career

They had a catchy song about logs.

And it was cool because prior to that there wasn't really any gross out cartoons for stoner college students. I'm not saying Ren & Stimpy was ever good, but it's all we had okay.

Let us not forget that cartoons in the 80's were just 30 minute infomercials for toys.

/\/\/\/\/\ gently caress you man i don't wanna see torture porn from a kiddie diddler who has a weird obsession with his abusive dad. it's like, mel gibson but with animation.

Talking about 30 Rock in another thread and I realized - as much as I love it, there are many things that make it not have aged well, because it was from a more innocent time when everyone assumed we'd keep moving in a progressive direction. And even though it makes light of liz's racism, and pete's (his booze being stolen by some "black *pauses, sees POC around him* HEARTED individual"), it feels much less innocent when you consider they are the most powerful people in the show and are openly racist at times.

Also a LOT of the Regina Bookman/Jack Donaghy stuff is rough now - her challenging NBC for more diversity is portrayed as Al-Sharpton-style political grandstanding in order to be re-elected, Jack is portrayed as the misunderstood white man who supports diversity and even has a passionate speech about immigrants making America great, completely missing the point that they're still not hiring/programming in a way which reflects this belief. I am currently rewatching it and there are things here making me wince, yikes yikes yikes. Definitely some #alllivesmatter #notallmen BS going on here. Tina Fey is a liberal person, but she's still an upper-middle-class white person from Pennsylvania and it shoooows.

I feel like Ren and Stimpy was only good because of the restrictions placed on it by Nick required it to be a bit clever, and once Johnny K could just draw and animate a straight-up assfucking scene the show got lazy.

It was also a product of the times and groundbreaking in that gross out stuff basically didn't happen on that level. The earliest stuff was great but well...k himself is a total poo poo that doesn't play well with others. Apparently he'd just ignore deadlines and be all like :siren: MY VISION :siren: whenever that or somebody telling him he couldn't do something came up. Nick keeping him on a leash definitely did a lot. Adult party cartoon was insane garbage.

He didn't finish the season; another animator took over. Years later when the entire series was released on dvd, John K was invited to do commentaries for all the episodes and from what I've heard spends all his time on the ones he had little-to-nothing to do with grousing about how they aren't how he would have done it.
