One of my favorite things that has happened in my life (and this is counting both the former model and the ballet dancer) is when a buddy and I toured the USS Hornet in Alameda. We did the deck nd the hangar bay, then we cut a docent out of the herd and got him to do a tour for just the two of us. That was three hours of "so then this happened, right over there" and it was awesome. FYI, the brig on the Hornet is loving cramped. That's definitely a punishment.

If you are an absolute beginner you win 2 weeks historically late.

You used to be able to glitch the game and get to Berlin in 1944 but I dont think that is going to happen (it might!).

We sweep the enemy from Manus again.

The need to learn it's MY island!

Oh look, I still have subs!

Keep the pressure up!

We get planes up today!

Aww, they kept their fighters at home today!

So I took my pound of flesh from their navy instead.

USS Picuda sinks the destroyer Yunagi in the Philippines. RAF Beaufighters sink the German minesweeper M-347 off the northern Dutch coast. A long list of German warships are scuttled to avoid capture by advancing Allied forces in France, marking the end of Kriegsmarine surface forces in the Channel and Atlantic coast. At Toulon: torpedo boat TA-13 (ex-French La Bayonnaise). At Bordeaux: destroyer Z-37 and minesweepers M-262, M-304, M-344, M-363, and M-463.

At this point is it possible to thin the Allied escorts if you keep up mauling thier DE's and DD's to hopefully make raiding a bit easier or are they pumping them out more htan they are CVE's?

Can we convince the Allies they have to start delivering their escort ships in oil tankers and send them into our harbors to deploy? That might help.

I mean to be fair we're also sinking them by the hundreds. We've put a drat solid dent in Allied shipping, and even if they still have functionally infinity of a lot of things their local presence in a specific region can get hosed up good if nothing else.

With all the CV's that are also missing, I estimate that about 90% of the USN's flattops are all tied up edge to edge in Pearl having a massive boat party.

After learning the folly of amphibious landings, they're being employed in an audacious plan to line up bow to stern and drive tanks from Hawaii to the Japanese mainland

Yeah theoretically shouldn've the USN and RN have like 15 or so CV's, 10-15 CVL's, and at least 70-80 CVE's by this point?

I mean 1944 is when they were building an Essex class carrier and deploying it every six weeks..

They keep trying to dock at Manus.

I'm keeping up the pressure.

To the east I hunt down a troop laden convoy.

They send planes after the cruisers.

So down come the planes!

Why is there a tanker there?

Their carrier are still circling.

Keep on bombing.

That was a nicely one-sided day! I've ordered half my forces out of Chungking, to see if we can get them to attack us.

I'm not sure what is weirder - the AI's propensity to send an unescorted tanker to a Japanese held island, or the fact the Japanese are holding thier own in the air war come the late summer of 1944 and are inflicting even losses and taking down US Strategic Bombers.

They take heavy losses, but it's amazing this force even saw the enemy carrier!

They strike at Guam, but we see those ships did not die in vain!

We take out another strike force!

Then another!

Planes are just dropping from the sky!

That was another brutal day that was much closer than the combat reports suggested.

What, so they can just run out of fuel and ditch before they even reach the bomber target? There's a reason Spitfires weren't generally used for escort missions, as they had terrible flight range.

I'd guess the issue we're seeing is some combination of a difference in combat experience, plus being assigned to an escort mission possibly nerfing their stats in some relevant way.

Yet another German minesweeper bites the dust, this time M-266 at Kiel, sunk by the RAF.

27 August 1944

The RAF—rocket-firing Typhoons this time—tears up another trio of minesweepers north of Le Havre, but there's a twist: these minesweepers are British. They were spotted by RAF reconnaissance, which reported that they "appeared to be friendly," but the naval staff in charge of beachhead security had not been informed of the change in plans that had put them there and thus ordered the attack. HMS Britomart and Hussar were sunk outright and HMS Salamander damaged beyond repair with her stern blown off.
