to be in a power in the shadows has started up again, and it is still very very silly. a mysterious woman pops in and kills a monster, then says a bunch of completely sincere chuuni lines. the mc, who was pointlessly striking a pose off to the side, then proceeds to also go publicly hunt monsters while stealing all of her lines without actually knowing what she was talking about.

omfg. i don't usually make such frequent updates, but remember how in tempest of stellar war the mc had never once risked his life? the very first time he did, his group of what i can only describe as military olympics hopefuls hosed up big time because they were mostly rich failsons which is supposed to be a positive thing to be somehow? so he went out for a space battle with the only two guys who were still functional, got his rear end thoroughly kicked, and then his magic helper took over and won the battle by itself. that wouldn't be too unusual except again, the mc had never done anything even vaguely risky for 300 chapters, and also this amazing feat led to him being made the military olympics team leader. but remember, his physics achievements were completely plagiarized. now his military achievements are also essentially plagiarized.

the only thing he has ever accomplished without taking credit for someone else's work is e-sports, and even then his success is entirely due to his magical two year training regimen that consisted entirely of jumping squats.

How does jumping squats help with esports? Is this a team-based esports or single player? And even then, is this VR or... I mean, the usual thing you need is hand eye coordination (and game knowledge), right?

it's a vr mech piloting game that is also occasionally dota. he had no prior experience with that game, games in general, or piloting mechs. it was all due to jumping squats.

i very much doubt that he is rich, because rich people don't grind away in menial soul crushing jobs as a general rule. writing webnovels professionally (lol) is very grueling and not exactly lucrative. it requires pumping out semi-coherent walls of text day after day, with any breaks tanking their popularity and the payment is based partly on popularity. this particular author has already written at least two other very long godawful webnovels prior to tosw, so he has been at this for years.

exalting the wealthy because they are on top (so naturally they must deserve to be there) isn't exactly unique to china.

I like how the recent Forge of Destiny stuff actually mentioned how much Ling Qi's personality has changed. Part of me doesn't really like the direction her personality has gone, but it's also made her a better and more distinct character than if she just did/said the things that I wanted her to. Ji Rong kinda had a point when he mentioned that there's nothing really more evil/bad about what he did than what Ling Qi/Cai's faction did (if anything, it was a pretty morally neutral conflict). It's also nice that Ji Rong himself seems to be changing; FoD's biggest strength has always been how organic/natural its characters feel, and how they're capable of growing and changing along with the protagonist.

(Regarding Ji Rong, I'll be very curious to see how he compares with Ling Qi further down the line; the cultivation time he lost is going to matter less and less as more time passes, and he still has that talent advantage over Ling Qi.)

edit : Ji Rong owns, lol

quote:

‘Suppose so,” Ji Rong admitted, a lopsided grin spreading across his face as he raised his fists into a guard stance. “Gonna break your face now.”

I noticed during that fight that Ji Rong appears to not have a spirit. Ling Qi is gonna really have to step up her game if she wants to stay ahead of him, given she currently has the advantages of better resources + a special pet + the lack of Ji Rong's setback.

I think it's important to keep in mind that these duels prove almost nothing about actual ability to win fights in real word circumstances. Ji Rong is a facepuncher getting to start in melee range against a mid-range support specialist, without any set-up allowed. He lacked a spirit, sure, but that's probably as much due to his own inherent disadvantages as it is anything. Dude doesn't have a lot of qi to support a spirit because he went all in on punching hard, punching fast, and overwhelming the opponent before they can respond. He never really took the time to make sure he had a lot of qi. His domain weapon can be broken to restore qi and health it seems though, so he's aware of the weakness and working around it.

One thing I have to disagree with though, is that I don't think Ji Rong expressed much change at all. He walked with more dignity I guess? But he was still a thug. He still held to that idea that whoever is strongest is right. And that it is better to be honest about this than try to conceal it. He is managing to control himself more, but he's still fundamentally the same dude. Go read his interlude and look at the pre-match banter. He is expressing the same attitude. I guess we don't have a lot to compare him with though because he doesn't show up much.

Ultimately it doesn't matter though, because he is not likely to feature that heavily in the future. And he didn't really feature at all in the Outer Sect, beyond being a dude that occasionally got dunked on, this most recent event being the Final Dunking.

I mean... Ji Rong was someone who spent his time in the conflict purposefully attacking people weaker than he was to break their face in, while Ling Qi/Cai's faction spent most of their giving training lessons to the lesser able people in the outer sect, giving them access to cheaper pills and giving them access to a safe space they could train in and sites.

CRX was totally a Tyrant, but it's worth noting that she was never on the offensive, and pretty much everything Liling's faction did was guerilla fighting and ambushes targetting at weaker cultivators, while CRX put herself in a position to guide and protect them.

Ji Rong's whole point in his dialog is that he hates people who pretend to help because those people lie anyway. So he continued to follow his old path of being a Thug Enforcer.

It's pretty valid to think that the outer sect should just be a free for all and to resist Cai's changes, though (and Cai's help was contingent on submission to her). Like, it's not really morally better or worse to push back against Cai's control. And it's not like Ling Qi is a big fan of playing fair; she's done some lovely stuff too.

I am going to point out that within a day of the thunder-dome Ling Qi was targeted by Huang Da's angry fiancee(?) for the crime of being stalked, was almost killed by Kang Zihao who tried to cripple Bai Meizhen and then turned on Ling Qi when his initial plan was thwarted, and Li Suyin was robbed and lost an eye.

Cai's pseudo-government was created to curtail that sort of anarchy and everyone in the council agreed to it at the time, until Sun Liling rebelled because she found the current situation incredibly boring and wanted good fights (Because she was powerful and entrenched and thus would have never suffered like Li Suyin or Su Ling).

Like, you could argue that Cai's forces are as capable of cruelty as Sun's forces (lol Bai Meizhen), but to argue that Cai's order and Sun's anarchy are the same from the POV of people on the ground with no backing is silly.

(Ji Rong platitude about Cai and Sun being bothsame is nonsense, it's just a continuation of him only having empathy for his small monekysphere and using any excuse to justify his dislike for Cai's regime)

It's not really valid to think there should be no factions. It is valid to think one should try and help his own faction be stronger than other factions, obviously, but everyone under Liling was /also/ under Liling, and arguably moreso than people under CRX were under CRX.

Yeah, the argument that CRX should be the one heading the outer sect is basically 'lol nepotism', but it's the same argument that Sun Liling should be leading her own faction, and ultimately we need to look at what the actual factions were doing.

Cai and Ling Qi have actually been rather consistent about being "one the defensive" and not "randomly bash people's head" like Sun Liling and Ji Rong have been doing, barring some of Fu Xiang's shenanigans (and at this point it is pretty clear Fu Xiang does not, in fact, follow CRX's wishes).

It's not morally bad to push back against CRX and want to establish your own thing, but it's morally bad when you do so by purposefully targeting the weaklings in order to create terror. Ji Rong just is looking back at the good old day when he was a gang leader, and wishes he was still one.

You gotta remember that most of these people are like the turbo bourgeoisie (with rare exceptions like Ling Qi/Su Ling*/Ji Rong); even the lower end cultivators are mostly the super rich and privileged.

So basically Ji Rong was sent to a school with a bunch of rich people and is spending his time busting their faces, which is a totally respectable hobby IMO.
