Isn't Banksy also worth tens of millions of dollars? "Take that society!" says a man who has more money than 99% of humans on this planet will ever see in their life.

Even disregarding that, the fact that his art is torn off walls and sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars kinda tells me it's not really doing a great job of making its point to the kind of people in a position to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a section of Banksy-touched wall.

from the same article

quote:

Take the water tank on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, overlooking the Pacific Coast Highway outside of LA. Thinking the old tank was abandoned, Banksy painted a caption on the side of it "This Looks A Bit Like An Elephant", and instantly turned it into a tourist attraction and a potential money-maker for two owners of a media design firm that bought the tank from the city of LA with plans to remove and sell it. There was just one complication - the homeless man, Tachowa Covington, who had been living inside of it for seven years and suddenly had his home destroyed.

Banksy heard about the situation, and within hours had reached out to Covington, giving him enough money to get an apartment and support himself for an entire year. This was not enough for the artist. He went on to remove the water tank from his website, and refused to authenticate it for the new owners. The result? Instead of a profitable sale at auction, the tank ended up in a scrap metal yard.

Maybe he put it back after they scrapped it? Anyway, Banksy has some good work and lots of meh work. A lot of the triteness comes from overexposure too, i think.

People removing an entire wall with what's supposed to be public art to sell it to art speculators is a pretty good example of capitalism ruining everything it touches to be honest.

My aunt was in the air force during Desert Storm; she said that on her base they had one firepit for literally all their trash-- food, tires, vehicle waste, printer cartridges, munitions, tent canvas, body armor. This fire pit was near the center of the base and the smog from the fire gave her (and likely everyone else on base) lovely Lungs Disease.

You'll be happy to know the military was still doing this 15 years later and probably continuing today, except they started including literal bags of poo poo when burning trash in forward operating bases without any kind of sanitation services. At least they had the sense to move the burn areas to the perimeter of the bases so the only people getting lovely Lung Disease were the poor fucks whose job it was to poke at the burn pile with a stick.

Dunno if it's exactly what you mean but process where transgressive cultural stuff from a subculture is taken up and made toothless by the majority culture is called recuperation.

This would be like jazz going from the scary negro to what you can hear in fancy places or elevators

Same with rock and roll, hip hop, punk, the Simpsons, the letter A in a circle, che tshirts, weed to an extent, etc forever. At one point and sometimes in stages all those things had various amounts of blow back from the mainstream. People were legit saying Bart was corrupting the youth(!).

There were times, and maybe there still are, where if you walked into a honky tonk bar you could end up turbo murdered. That's not a term that is real tough sounding today maybe.

What's the name of the piece I'm thinking of, some goon will know. 1800s. Paris. Maybe something involving the spirit of spring? drat near caused riots. Would be boring and lame today.

This probably goes back to Babylonians and the gods drat youth and their beard rings pissing off shamash (two generations later statues of the god have the same ring)

The original choreography is lost. We only can guess from contemporary descriptions. The ballet was about sacrificing a virgin basically. It was so obscene at the time, with the "native" dancing, the girl dying violently on stage, and the jarring music. I don't think it would have been received well as an orchestral work alone, but I don't think it would have caused the riots and gotten the raging hatred that it did without the choreography of Nijinsky.

Yeah it is really weird. I know trumpists who on election day were saying how the stock market is a meaningless indicator for the health of the economy (true) and how unemployment is artificially made lower by not including people who find it too hopeless to search for jobs (also true) then the day after they start proclaiming that trump has given us the greatest economy ever as evidenced by the stock market and unemployment rates.

Ofc these same people also claim the great recession and the stock market crash preceding it were caused simply by Obama being ahead in the polls so they're legit morons. It would just be nice for some consistency.

I read a story in GiP about one time on a West German US Army base where they burned a bunch of pallets that were Vietnam War surplus. The treatment that they had put on the wood to stop it from being rotted by tropical parasites was catalysed to a methamphetamine analog by the fire, and assaults, indecent behaviour and general crime on base went up by over a thousand percent that week.

That sounds made up as all gently caress, if only because I don't buy that the military would care enough to actually run any sort of chemical analysis to figure out why even if something like that did happen.
