Re: In-house. My first in-house shot was a nonprofit. I was top two. Perfect fit. Experience with all the job duties, although not with the core mission (which doesn’t matters and no lawyer would have). The GC I interviewed with used to work at my firm. The nonprofit used my firm for some of their legal work. Came back for a one hour interview that ended up lasting over two hours.

Didn’t get it. I know who got it and he had less experience and a flighty resume. I was at such a low point at my firm then that it sunk me in a huge depression for about 6 months. My wife was like suicide watch on me which I resented at the time bc I wasn’t going to do that but I appreciate now that she did that.

My second in house interview was 18 months later. It was a group interview with a VP and all the senior lawyers. It lasted 25 minutes. My experience was eh for the job duties. I had studied the company but it didn’t really come up. I walked out like lol welp maybe next time. They called my references the next day and I got it.

In-house doesn’t make any sense.

Speaking of govt officials, Illinois has a fun case coming up. Plaintiffs allege State farm illegally funded a supreme Court Justice race to the tune of about 4 mil with expectation he would cast the deciding vote to overturn a billion dollar class action judgment against them (he did).

It's survived motion to dismiss and MSJ , plaintiffs just won a motion letting a judicial ethics expert testify. Trial set for next week!

quote:

An authority on judicial ethics can testify in an upcoming trial over whether State Farm Mutual Automobile
Insurance Co. violated racketeering laws in an alleged scheme involving huge, secretive campaign donations
to a 2004 Illinois Supreme Court candidate.
The candidate State Farm allegedly backed, Lloyd Karmeier, won the election and within nine months cast the
deciding vote in a decision that struck down a $1.05 billion judgment against State Farm.
Judge David Herndon of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois ruled that at the trial,
scheduled for Sept. 4, judicial ethics consultant Mark Harrison may present reports and testimony that could
prove damaging to State Farm and other defendants in the case. Harrison, a partner with Osborn Maledon
P.A. in Phoenix, Ariz., has more than 50 years’ experience as a civil and appellate litigator.
Rejecting State Farm’s motion to exclude, Herndon said Harrison’s opinions are “both relevant and reliable” for
the purposes of a jury trial. Herndon rejected State Farm’s assertion that Harrison’s views constituted “legal
conclusions” regarding the Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations Act.
“Harrison’s extensive experience in the judicial ethics field provides sufficient basis for him to offer his opinions,
” Harrison wrote Aug. 21. “Further, the Court does not perceive anything in Harrison’s expert report as an
attempt to offer legal conclusions. It is clear that Harrison is not serving as an expert to determine whether
defendants violated RICO. His testimony relates to judicial ethics issues.”
Herndon’s ruling comes as the parties gear up for an unprecedented trial that will cast a spotlight on the
campaign financing behind the election of the sitting chief justice of the Illinois Supreme Court.
RICO Conspiracy
A class of consumers has alleged the defendants engaged in a RICO conspiracy that sought to elect Karmeier
to the Illinois Supreme Court, in a bid to strike down a landmark $1.05 billion judgment that was pending
against State Farm.
The 2004 election, at the time the most expensive state judicial contest in U.S. history, seated Karmeier on the
high court, where he currently serves as chief justice. The original complaint alleges State Farm “secretly
funneled to Karmeier’s campaign as much as $4 million (over 80%) of Karmeier’s total $4.8 million campaign
contributions.”
Less than a year after the election, Karmeier was part of a 4-2 Supreme Court majority that struck down the
$1.05 billion judgment in Avery v. State Farm . The Aug. 18, 2005 ruling saved State Farm from compensatory
and punitive damages previously awarded to 4.7 million customers who claimed the insurer improperly used
non-original equipment manufacturer parts during vehicle repairs.
The Avery plaintiffs attempted to revive the case in 2011 based on new evidence that State Farm conspired to
support Karmeier through third parties, including tort reform groups. When the case collapsed, the plaintiffs
filed their RICO claim in federal court, demanding $9 billion. That amount reflects the original judgment, 20
years of interest, and treble damages. While the case does not target Karmeier, it does list his campaign
committee, Citizens for Karmeier, as a defendant

I used CLIO for the two years I did clinic. It was awesome for document automation, keeping client files organized, being able to work from anywhere, and a really easy interface. The downside is that it’s a little expensive.

LegalEdge was designed to work on WindowsXP, has terrible functionality, and I think is only used by PD offices because it’s cheap. Same with OnBase.

My office uses pro-law which isn't really designed for groups that don't bill hours and don't do traditional litigation.
It sucks out loud.

My PD office used a custom system that basically used PDFs. It was probably klunky as hell on the back-end but was actually pretty great in use. We all got ipads, so we could access our files and take notes in court and even in the jail (jail allow us to bring them).
