Half-Life 1 also got a lot of mileage out of the voice clips misleading you. They never reload and they never flank, but they say they are and the game spawns them in smart enough ways that you might think they are.

This was a big part of F.E.A.R.'s AI too. Similar mindset where they level design is what makes or breaks how good the AI appears to the player and then having the AI never shut up about what it's doing is what really sells it consistently.

I think my favorite detail of that is in RAGE as much of a mess as that game was overall. If an enemy throws a grenade and it ricochets back to him but the game determines if it can't be evaded in time and if now anyone near the guy who through it will start yelling at him and asking him what the gently caress he was thinking. So like you're on the high ground, you see a grenade headed your way plink off a railing and fall back on the thrower and hear a "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH Y-*BOOM* :3:

I remember reading about Half-Lifes skeletal animation system in maybe 1996 and thinking valve were goddamn wizards. I was playing Duke Nukem 3D, Half-Life looked like something from ten years in the future. So many systems in Half-Life were revolutionary even if it was, at times, smoke and mirrors (like flanking AI)

FEAR was weird because it did the super macho badass action SO WELL

*slides across the ground and kicks a terrified soldier in the face, blows him away with shotgun while walls explode around you*

but the story is actually a horror story where a little tortured creepy girl turns people inside out or whatever

I liked it, but it was definitely whiplashing quite a bit for me

Best loadout in FEAR was akimbo pistols, shotgun and something else because the pistol was crazy good that they toned it down on both Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate.

I'll never get what people see in FEAR, the environmental destruction was cool but I thought that every single gun felt like total poo poo.

Most of them were really inaccurate and had crazy recoil.

Nevermind the level design was just endless office spaces, industrial basements, and what I think were sewers?

The reason was that they built the levels as big "blocks" of things that they could re-order, move around, and edit easily.

So they became very generic. Very square, very bland, no recognizable landmarks.

Barudak
May 7, 2007

I remember only one land mark in Fear and it was the fat programmer gently caress you had to escort.

What I remember most about the shooting was that the guns were clunky as hell and poo poo but when you actually had bullets hit your enemies they felt satisfyingly nasty to offset that. drat shame each subsequent game got further and further from that.

Couldnt you only play that in multiplayer? I seem to recall that if you played solo you were stuck playing shooter man and shooterman was very not fun. Almas rape victim exploding in a pile of gore and the tedious to play but aesthetically cool haunted suburb were the only memorable things

You could play as Fettel in Co-op but if you played solo, it was only available if you beat the game as Point Man (so sort of NG+ thing). F3AR wasn't great but shooting was decent and playing as a ghost dude was the best. Still not even close as how good FEAR 1 was.

Yes, and in chocolate doom you have left and right only as well. The problem (imo) in OG doom is that "up and down" motions with the mouse translate into "walk forward/back". I remember playing with keyboard only back in the day because I hated the way the mouse controlled, even before there was anything to compare it against it felt wrong

I played OG Doom arrow keys+alt to strafe with shift to run and ctrl to fire and spacebar to open doors/secrets. I also played Quake1 keyboard only, including multiplayer :)
HL1 was my first m+kb game afaik.

I was kind of the same way until Quake came out and we started deathmatching on the powermacs in my high school's digital art (photoshop) class, I tried with the keyboard first and got owned repeatedly by mouse users, went home and downloaded the demo and basically trained myself to play an FPS "properly", then went back and did way better. It helped that a guy in the class gave me the console commands to have full (modern style) mouselook in quake, iirc by default it's doom style with no options in the menu to switch.

e: it's hard to believe now but it was incredibly disorienting to have proper mouselook for the first time, and it was not "natural", it actually felt really awkward for hours until it clicked. maybe this is why it wasn't a menu option.

Decided to fire up DO4M for fun and I have a razer keyboard now I didn't have the last time I played it.

Turns out Razer has a unique RGB profile for the game that responds to gameplay:

This video makes me want to consider getting phillips hue bulbs for enhancing the play of games that have profiles like this. With those bulbs + the keyboard and mouse effects, the game has a very arcade look and feel.

The thing that sold me on FEAR being real special was in the demo, seeing two dudes across the way from me, unaware, and I shot one with the nail gun and took his head clean off and pinned it to the wall behind him.

His buddy yelled “poo poo!” and immediately started firing... nowhere near where I was. Like not even remotely close. He freaked out, but had absolutely no clue where the shot came from.

Back when it came out, the very idea that AI could have a state between unaware and aimbot death laser was just mind boggling.

At one point in the game an invisible solder appeared, drop kicked me, then jumped clear up into the ceiling ventilation and ran away.

I guess that's dumb AI or something but it was one of the most simultaneously hilarious and sudden things I've ever remembered in gaming, and I loved the immense pressure that the enemies in that game put on you if you tried to hide in cover.
