Remember when chatbots for customer support were all the rage in the late 90s? This is the same thing, just more refined.

in 2018 not only will you get an unhelpful response form a chatbot but google will sell that info about you to your health insurer who will raise your rates it's like the advice nurses they have on a 24/7 line who can't say anything except "go to a doctor"

we noticed you once mentioned having a headache, so your claim for this brain tumor surgery is denied on account of it being a preexisting condition

I wonder if you can permanently curse someone with random baby goods ads by asking google chatbot to search for car seats or something

a few months ago there was some noise about a company that was going to let you screw around with a target person's ad experience by modifying their google/facebook/etc cookies (through installation of a hidden phone app or something). they gave examples of like, kids want a puppy, so they use this service to make mom and dad's phones constantly show articles about how healthy and responsible it is to buy your children a dog. or the more grody example (which got them all the press) was you could do it to your wife's phone and show her ads and topics that would subconsciously trick her into initiating sex more often or letting you put it in the bum or whatever. anyway, i saw that and i was like...i wonder if you could do this to yourself? can i install an app that will cause all these companies to just serve me pictures of fluffy birds?
|
# ? Sep 1, 2018 00:35 |
|
yes, you can. ublock origin or whatever you use is basically search/replace so you can just have it put birds instead of the ads... also allow me to advertise my bird thread here: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3843092

ya i know i can do it locally but i want to make this happen on the companies' servers. so even if i log into a lovely public computer with all the toolbars and everything, it's still just birds

you can try to customize your ad preferences but it doesn't do a lot of good, like I get ads for restaurants in like east orange county because the "why'd I get this?" says "you live in california" and the restaurant bought a million impressions so they're going to cast a wide net I did manage to get instagram to stop showing me ads for high tech kickstarter boxer briefs by interacting with a couple of the furniture ads though

my job involves a lot of searching for some really random poo poo so my ad profiles are all hosed up. for while google updated their style sheet so their ads were getting through and I was getting ads for gas turbine repair classes. then I found a filter list which would block the new format.

https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=881410 lmao chrome is stripping "www." or "m." from domains, which means: www.pool.ntp.org becomes pool.ntp.org subdomain.www.domain.com becomes subdomain.domain.com www.citibank.com.sg becomes citibank.com.sg www.example.www.example.com becomes example.example.com m.tumblr.com becomes tumblr.com www.m.www.m.example.com becomes example.com anthonypants fucked around with this message at 02:43 on Sep 7, 2018 |

when they said they wanted to get rid of urls they meant it literally the future is basically your parent who types in google.com into the bar then searches for “yahoo”
