I assume this is compression, it's very similar to how Iwata compressed Earthbound and Pokemon GS. Saves a lot on space and makes loading areas really easy, at the cost of it making it really easy to sequence break and wrong warp if you can OOB in any way.

Honestly my only real and extremely minor gripe with BotW isn't necessarily the lack of dungeons, but I wish it had had some kind of cave/underground system to lend an extra layer of verticality to Hyrule. Underground would complicate the basic game loop of Breath of the Wild, which is based on new landmarks of various sizes coming into view as you move around. It would be an awesome thing to include, but I expect they wanted to get the basic idea down solidly before attempting things like adapting it to the low-visibility environment of caves.

Yeah. There are at least three dungeony areas in hollowed out mountains, too, it's just not an overdone feature

I’m fine with how they handled “underground” areas but I wish there were a few more. I see why it wasn’t a huge priority considering the shrines though.

The dumb Zelda idea I've always had is for one that takes place entirely inside an enclosed megastructure with a high degree of vertical exploration (similar to Super Metroid). Link would get SM64-style platforming moves like a jump, walljump, and wallrun combined with existing Zelda items. So you might double walljump to gain height, wallrun, kick off to a rope, jump off that and use an arrow-time midair hookshot to reach a chest. Like SM64 the game could be beaten the "correct" way with inexact platforming or could be completely broken with precise movement and weird movement tech like momentum from bombs.

That would be a pretty radical change though when I hope Breath of the Wild Gaiden is more of an iteration.

I just got really lucky with the desert labyrinth: I approached from above, as always, and jumped down in an area where I saw some purple muck. Turns out it was just around the corner from the entrance to the shrine :v:

Is there an actually good wiki for this game? I keep getting directed to lovely sites such as IGN or polygon.

More specifically, I'm trying to farm dragon parts and comet falls, but don't wanna spend forever to find the sweet spots of the lightning and frost dragons, and won't remember the valley of the fire dragon forever.

edit: Also, what's the turn around time for getting dragon bits? I noticed firing a dozen arrows doesn't get you a dozen pieces.

You can only get one piece per dragon flyby, but you can rest at a campfire to instantly respawn the dragons as many times as you like.

Lightning dragon you wanna go to Riola Spring in Faron, he'll pop out of the pool at the top of the waterfall every morning and is really easy to shoot.

Frost dragon is easiest from the top of the Lanayru Promenade. It's not as fast as the lightning dragon, but it'll fly right under you and you can shoot right down and hit whatever part you need.

The fire dragon is easy to farm parts from that area in the Elden Mountains where the great skeleton is. From what I recall you can't actually wait on the Leviathan Skeleton itself (the dragon won't spawn if you are there) but if you are on an outcropping of the cliffs directly south of it and use a fire to sit next to and cycle the time it'll appear every morning/dawn. Then jump over to the Leviathan Skull or that outcropping of rock next to the cliff just north of it, use a long-range bow, and blam, a piece every time.

FRIENDS, LISTEN TO ME
I AM A SEAGULL
OF WEALTH AND TASTE
Started playing this the other day. It's my first Zelda since some short stints at A Link to The Past at a friend's SNES back in middle school. So far the game itself is very good, but the Switch is my first ever console and Breath of the Wild is the first game I've ever played with an analog stick controller, and I'm really not a fan of doing everything with my thumbs. There's just no fidelity at all, it feels like the sticks could just as well have like three discrete states and it'd be about the same. I even played Dark Souls (on PC) with keyboard and mouse, that's how much I'm not into analog sticks. I guess you get used to it, though.

I gotta say, I really like how the game encourages you to just go and do whatever you like in whichever direction might please you. So far I've stuck more or less to the main quest route and I'm not even to Hateno village yet because there's so much to see on the way. Normally I don't give a single gently caress about spoilers and just look poo poo up at the slightest provocation, but this game does an admirable job of making me want to explore on my own. I did go "gently caress it" on food recipes and which materials are safe to sell though because :effort:

Questions:
- if I pick up the DLC now, will it work with my existing save?
- how do you get the HP numbers above the enemy health bars? is that something you unlock through normal progression?

Yes. The newly added treasures will just be in the world and you'll get some quests that breadcrumb you subtly toward them.

There's a certain piece of equipment that has this effect, and you'll obtain it if you keep following the main quest for a little while longer.

It's actually really worthwhile to sneak around it for a bit even if you're not buffed to hell. There's useful treasure and quest targets, and it's a nice change to sneak around an actual building.

Even easier from the canyon rim on the other side from Hebra Tower (where the talos is). He flies under you a bit after dawn there. He flies the length of the canyon, so the bridge with Goron Golf underneath is probably good too.

I wish the game would make more obvious that you can and should go into hyrule castle well before you think you're ready to end the game. There's so many interesting routes there that become completely pointless when you march in fully geared up and revali's gale to the top, which are obviously there so exploration of it and nabbing of valuable treasure it contains are possible even at low health/ equipment levels.

There is that one girl in riverside stable who tells you of the possible routes to sneak in there but I've seen most players dismiss that with "well, i'm definitely not doing that yet"

Definitely one my biggest regrets and one I'll never be able to truly recapture. My next run will have me diving in and out to grab nice gear early on, and while the threat will be there due to weakness, I'll still have the knowledge and skills gathered over the first play through.

I avoided it initially due to trying to respect some linearity though I threw the rest of it out the window, and because I was genuinely intimidated by the place. It's annoying that I know what gear can be found there especially that one protective piece, that I'm going to beeline for because it's so damned useful. It was a surprise the first time I found it, but it was hardly necessary by that point.

The one thing I'm unsure about prioritizing the next run is the motorbike. It'll force me to do the whole plot really early on, but driving is so much more practical than getting a horse. I'm not sure how I'll go about it.

There are also a couple of quests guiding you there - one for finding some cookbooks and another for finding a suit of armor. I've largely avoided the castle area due to all of the guardians crawling around, but I have 16 hearts and max stamina now, and I've gotten much better at parrying shots

Sep 25, 2008
Yeah, there's a certain element of fun that's only to be found when pushing your limits. One of my favorite experiences in the game was going into Central Hyrule way the gently caress before I was ready, with the intention of grabbing the tower there and opportunistically raiding some shrines while avoiding anything that looked too scary. I got chased by Guardians several times, at a point when I had neither the gear nor the hearts to fight them, and didn't know the effective techniques yet either.

It was an absolute blast.

I guess I just figured there was a good chance Hyrule Castle would be a Point of No Return. Oh well.

Amppelix
Aug 6, 2010

There aren't even that many guardians around. It's not like you enter central hyrule and are suddenly surrounded by guardian beams from all sides, there's usually one patrolling a fairly large area that you can avoid with careful movement (and it's pretty fun to do so imo). No need to be the parry god and kill all of them that way.

I guess it's just not in every player's nature to go immediately test out what they can do against overwhelming odds. I definitely do that all the time in any game. What's the worst that can happen? You'll have to load an earlier save?

curried lamb of God
Aug 31, 2001

Finally beat the game and immediately went to buy the DLC

Y'all were right, central Hyrule was a joke at my level. I was able to easily take down the Guardians by hitting them with an arrow in the eye and then hacking off their limbs. I didn't even need ancient armor to do it!

also, max stamina is godlike in this game

Sorry for delay, haven't been on forums over the weekend. This guy has tons of vids on strategies and stuff and he keeps himself at 3 hearts, not picking up hearts after the divine beasts and only getting stamina from shrine rewards.

Edit: Also, I know the link I sent isn't in Master Mode, but it's an awesome vid of him going straight for Ganon with 3 hearts, no armor, and just weapons he found on the way. He doesn't have any shrines in this one, hence only one stamina piece upgrade.
