It is very unfortunate but I agree with Jim Sterling. Sony's first party titles are nearing the status of "retro games" at this point. It's very rare to see single player focused titles with the story being the main focus rather than it just being tacked on and having X hours of side content and live services type business model.

Sony's first party efforts are nearly as much as from a bygone era as Nintendo's.

Edit - I'm referring to AAA caliber productions of course, as there are a share of indie titles that share the bill, but it's not the same.

These games are quickly declining outside of indie games, which to be fair are even rare then due to the budget needed for them.

I hope the style of gaming doesn't go the same way as arcade gaming did after Sega exited the console business.

Don't worry about it, there's plenty. I think you can replace from the start but it destroys the old one and you'll later unlock the ability to replace while preserving the old one (but it won't make any difference to you really unless you're like swapping them out to minmax a particular element). Just go nuts.

They aren't really declining as much as major multiplat AAA publishers have lost interest. Sony and Nintendo seem to have no interest in stopping the flow of quality AAA titles. For them to be declining those companies would have to lose interest and and I've seen no evidence of that.

God of War was like the fastest selling Sony IP in a decade.

This is just a giant game of telephone because like 10 years ago big AAA releases were derivative sequels with bad campaigns (COD/Bioshock Infinite). They underperformed and execs read “no one wants lovely single player games” as “no one wants single player games”.

This new surge of SP focus is because Neir/Horizon destroyed everything else last year on the back of Witcher 3 and so now the perennially 5 years behind execs are back on board with big single player campaigns

bigger issue i think are ballooning dev costs and dev time. things that aren't a sure bet are that much less likely to be made. and a bunch of these games are anything but (wonder how the Days Gone devs are feeling).

i don't think there's a surge of SP focus, or that there will be one any time soon in the aaa sphere.

e:sony's in a slightly different situation than most publishers because besides selling their games they're also curating a console library

Yeah when you think about Last Of Us and God Of War it's not fair to exclude games like The Order 1886 or whatever that went on sale for like $10 within a couple months. I have a hunch Days Gone is gonna be a similar kind of stinker but I'd love to be proven wrong because I want more good games to play!

edit: and even though it was reasonably well received and sold ok I'll eat my drat hat if I can't buy Detroit: Become Human for $20 or less by the end of the year. These AAA single player experiences are a risky proposition and they can't all be God of War.

The music is phenomenal too but currently I do not have much of a clue what is going on. I do like Morgana and Ryuji. For real! :D

Here's a few bits of advice:

- DO NOT wait to do the dungeon when they start the 2-3 week timer. Do it right away as soon as it's offered, go all the way to the end of the dungeon (which may take several play sessions / to-and-fro in game days), exhaust all possible routes, and get all the items right away. You'll understand why when you get to the throne room. Don't be like me and gently caress up and need to do 6-10 hours of gameplay all over again. Keep your eyes on that calendar in the pause menu!

- Treat teacher right. Get her to rank 10 asap

- Makoto is straight up the best character and should be in the party for every fight.

At a glance it doesn’t seem to have much that might pull you in via a video or watching a streamer, but the gunplay feels good, there’s neat hidden items, the VO and narration is on the north side of tolerable if not downright grinworthy at times.

This is not a review, as I’ve only played one level, alone, at that... but it made me want to play more.

There’s good enemy variety despite being solely focused on Egypt stuff... and lots of like, shootable environmental traps.

Mostly it just feels good and entertaining to play.

No, the developers are just really really big fans of zombie games. If you watch those recent gameplay videos from before E3 they pretty much say they don't care that zombie games are played out and just wanted to make one.

Days Gone doesn't look very great and it doesn't look very cinematic either. It looks like Sony just wanted a State of Decay-like and it doesn't look like that's what they're getting, which kind of pisses me off because PS4 probably has room for a State of Decay type game (that isn't State of Decay 2) but well MS owns that studio now.

Oh man you have some rad poo poo coming up. Please post your thoughts when you finish the main story quest of "the Bloody Baron".

So I just finished this quest/arc.

I got the impression that Granny was more than a little crazy and maybe had some Stockholm Syndrome going on with the Crones. Sure, she seemed like a good surrogate mother to Johnny and the Bog Orphans, but I was highly skeptical of the Crones right away and decided to cross them. Instead of killing the witch they'd imprisoned under the gnarled tree, I opted to free her. I thought maybe the developers would pull some "don't judge a book by its cover" stuff and the Lovecraftian witch monster who'd been killing peasantry would be helpful :downs:. When I got to the botchling quest with the Baron I opted to turn it into a lumperkin. He seemed totally irredeemable but I figured a benevolent hearth spirit might make him less of a tyrannical ruler and maybe the people of Crow's Perch would benefit, even if he never saw Anna or Tamara again. Imagine my surprise when I found out Anna was Granny and she'd been cursed because I doublecrossed the Crones. I accompanied Baron and his men to Crookback Bog, found a village that had been driven murderously insane by the witch I'd freed, and lifted Anna's curse but whoops she died from it anyway. Went back to Crow's Perch to find the place in disarray and the Baron swinging from a tree, leaving his even more tyrannical sergeant in charge. Between this and unwittingly unleashing the pestilential spirit from Fyke Isle Geralt is actively making a war-torn hellhole 10 times worse :v:

How are they losing interest, when that is consistently what both companies have done and are doing for the foreseeable future? multi plat AAA publishers have just chased the latest trend for a decade or more, be it narrative single player, multiplayer focus, battle royale or whatever. First party titles have always had more pressure to actually be good.

You are really looking at things with rose colored glasses if you think there was a point where AAA games were full of great single player narrative focused games. Most of the AAA games of the last gen were just 10 hour long cover shooters with garbage stories it's not like things have gotten dire. The amount of good SP games to play this gen stomps on the last.
