D C posted:(He wasnt around because he refused to get in the planes) Related, one my favorite stories from the Lord of the Rings filming: Sean Bean was so scared of helicopters that, when they were shooting scenes up on a glacier, he would spend an extra 2+ hours every day hiking up the mountain, in full costume, rather than fly up with the rest of the cast and crew. I think they said he tried it once and was so freaked out that he refused to do it again.

Somehow that makes the movie adaptation of Bravo Two Zero slightly funny, where he rips off his headset after their insertion helo's locked up and screams something to the tune of "if it's comin' I don't wanna hear it!"

Tom Hardy refusing to go flying for his in-cockpit shots in Dunkirk is one of my biggest celebrity let-downs.

I think they said he tried it once and was so freaked out that he refused to do it again. He rode in the helicopter the first time, Billy BOyde and Dominic Monaghan (Pippin and Merry) knew of his phobia of flying and asked the helicopter pilot to shoe 'em some real flying on the way to the location. Sean Bean did not like that at all, so for few more days of shooting in that location he rode the skilift halfway up the mountain and hiked the rest, with a quick makeup touchup before filming and then hiking back down.

Potato Salad posted:pffff y'all don't know loud till you're loving around in a propulsion laboratory I was glued to the fences at Rhein Mein AFB and got to see a ton of aircraft. F-15's, 141's, and Galaxy's were pretty loving loud (at the time). Concord though had to be the loudest. It hurt listening to that aircraft.

I guess strictly speaking probably the loudest thing I've ever heard was firing a friend's 500 SW without ear protection. It was difficult to understand people for a couple days after that because everyone had begun speaking at a Mickey Mouse pitch. I no longer consider hearing protection a recommendation

It turns out I’m wrong about cabin pressure. Eight thousand feet is the regulatory limit but it isn’t so closely approached.

There's a good podcast called omega tau which is about science and engineering topics and they have one or two episodes on the Perlan Project. They cover plenty of varied topics but probably about half of the episodes are about air & space to some degree so it's worth a subscribe if you like podcasts and deep dives into those topics.

Omega Tau is awesome; the interviews are long and in depth enough to cover things that you usually won’t get elsewhere. Lots of great aviation episode, but even the ones about things like container shipping are really interesting. Although, my wife only asks for the “German guy” on a long road trip when she wants to fall asleep. The most recent episode is an interview with a bush pilot who flies in Papua for a mission air service.

So, what’s the deal with the CEO of a rocket company that has contracts with the NRO and the need for a security clearance? Did Musk smoking a blunt on some idiot’s podcast put that business in jeopardy?

Doesn't Shotwell run the show? Unless he's dealing with any sort of classified information, I don't see the risk. You're assuming he needs a clearance. I'm not sure that's the case.

Did Musk smoking a blunt on some idiot’s podcast put that business in jeopardy? Some people at SpaceX probably need a clearance for some aspects of NRO payloads, SpaceX is big enough that it makes sense for them to have the infrastructure to hold clearances, and part of that infrastructure is making sure management (including ownership) is cleared or at least clearable.
