X posting from the terrain thread:

BULBASAUR posted:

Remember that giant 8x5 textured gaming mat that I made last winter? Well I also needed a table for it. It had to be portable so I could hide it in my closet with the rest of my shameful hobby and small enough to fit into the trunk of my car. Nobody makes ping pong sized table that fits all those criteria so I had to learn wood crafting and build my own. Took me probably two months to finish the project largely because I never worked with wood before and the hinges were nearly impossible to find in America.

Like all things BULBASAUR, it was more complicated than it should have been:

It's semi portable in that it folds into a tiny little 4' x 2.5' x 1' box, but it's heavy as hell and requires two people to move. Here it is unpacked:

The hinges were the most expensive part of the project and took the most time install due to the shape of the mortises:

Here it is with my matt which either shrunk in size or I was drinking too heavily when I measured it initially:

Next step, actual terrain.

I just tried to place an order from the new FW US wearhouse and its comical. They converted my gift voucher of 100GPB to 120USD instead of 130USD. Then they raised the price on the thing I wanted from 167 to 200USD. Ontop of that they are also charging sales tax, which is an extra $20.20.

In summary I'm paying FW an extra $63, which is a 38% price increase. gently caress globalization and gently caress games workshop.

I saw people online really frustrated with the gift voucher thing. And whoever runs the FW facebook was fighting a rearguard action against the truth in every post.

I had some Custodes FW stuff open in my browser last week (because I am dumb) and refreshed and the flier is now $425.

There is no way that thing costs $425 to make.

FW are sinking themselves. But hey, templates.

Played 1k of ZM against Olloth’s EC tonight, and it was a pretty fun one. My list:

1k Aux ZM
Solar Auxilia

5 Tactical Command Veteran Auxiliaries: Strategos; Proclaimator; Vexilarius; 2 Tactical Command Veteran Auxiliaries; 2 × grenade launcher 85

Auxilia Infantry Tercio
20 Lasrifle Auxiliaries: Sergeant; Vexilla Bearer; Vox Operator; 17 Lasrifle Auxiliaries 100
10 Flamer Auxiliaries: Sergeant; 9 Flamer Auxiliaries 125

10 Servo-automata: Enginseer Adept (Cortex Controller; graviton gun); Enginseer Adept (Cortex Controller; graviton gun); 8 Servo-automata; 8 × grenade launcher 245

3 Ogryn Charonites 185

2 Castellax Class Battle-automata: 2 × Darkfire cannon; 2 × flamer 260

1,000 points

The bois:

We rolled from the standard missions and got the one where you get scaling VPs for controlling your deployment/no mans land/their deployment and tanks can score. I go first and run everything I can, sending out a half lasrifle squad, the flamers and Shrek squad out the long way towards his zone while my stompy lads gummed up a fire corridor, my command squad calibrated its telescope, and the other half of my lasrifle squad sat in the deployment zone for the rest of the game to claim the points.

Olloth had two 10 man tac squads, a praetor and a champion, two contemptor dreads and 5 of whatever those charnabal saber EC guys are. He did some Maru Skara bullshit and outflanked his dreads while pushing into the center of the board with the rest of his army.

I took some potshots with my stompy lads and shot my command squad lazer beam and killed a couple marines, he shot my lasrifle guys with bolters, then his contemptors crashed in.

The first dread went after my castellax in close combat, and the second tried to mulch my servitors but I was juuust out of charge range and lit him up with haywire.

The rest of the game played out pretty quick- my castellax tanked the dread and Olloth’s sword elfs, then the servitors polished off the second contemptor while the flamers murdered some tacs. The praetor and champion sworded 10 lasrifles to death, and then got torn to pieces by three angry shreks. Pretty cool!!!

Breathe.

Burning of Prospero and Betrayal at Calth are no longer available on the GW website, so if you needed more cheap plastic marines I'd grab them soonish before they start going up in price on eBay.

In related news, I've got 20 Mk 3 marines to start a ZM force. What else would be good to fill it out? I'm thinking about breachers and some faction-specific terminators, but I don't really know what's cool beyond that.

General overview of space marine forces in ZM:

HQs
Good ones: praetors, delegatus, champions, chaplains, forge lords
Possibly good ones: vigilators, legion specific special characters

When making your list, determine if you want to sink points in your HQ or not. Either take a cheap unit-buffer like a chaplain or a champ with a paragon blade, or go all out with a terminator praetor or a tricked out forge lord. Both are valid choices, but if you cut corners on your HQ, make sure to bring some means of instakilling a 2+/3 or 4++ T4 W3 model. Terminators with powerfists are usually a reliable option for mulching HQs.

Elites
Good ones: apothecaries, veterans, terminators, boxdreads, contemptors
Possibly good ones: mortis dreads, legion specific units, rapier batteries.

A contemptor is about the meanest individual unit you’ll see in ZM. Every ZM army should have a way of consistently dishing out damage to finish off AV13 with a 5++ in a round or two of shooting, or else you’ll get punched to death by an angry dead boi. Boxdreads aren’t to be underestimated either, since they have the hitting power of a contemptor and only a little less durability.

Terminator squads are fantastic in ZM- their armor is void resistant, their short range and lack of cheap transport options don’t matter at all in ZM, and if you’re feeling brave you can teleport attack them. A unit of 5 or more power/chainfists is one of the better ways of dealing with dreadnoughts and HQ choices, so they’re a nice security blanket against some of the scarier stuff you’ll come across.

Vets and apothecaries are great, just like they’re good in the regular game. Not much to discuss about the merits of an undercosted scoring unit with excellent weapon access and a unit that makes all your infantry squads 33% more durable.

Troops
Good ones: breachers, tacs, support squads
Good ones only if you’re white scars: assault marines.

Breachers are like the iconic ZM troops choice and they’re solid, but I’ve had some decent success taking 15 tacs with pistols and chainswords. Add in an apothecary and you have a quite good tarpit unit that dishes out enough attacks to bully smaller units of elite 2+ infantry. I wouldn’t really bother with bolters.

Support squads are great as usual. Flamers, volkite chargers and plasma are all useful options.

Fast Attack
The only one: seekers
Don’t take anything other than seekers. (Unless you’re white scars. White scars taking all assault marines and jetbikes rules and you should do it if you’re willing to commit to painting that much white and red)

Remember that the template rounds have shred!

Heavy Support
Good ones: heavy support squads, legion specific infantry.
Trap choices: leviathans and deredos.

Don’t take leviathans and dodos, they’re likely going to be too fat to fit down hallways. Autocannons are usually a great heavy support squad weapon choice, but might not be enough against a contemptor, so I’d consider missile launchers. The frag rounds have shred and the krak rounds glance a contemptor on a 5+, so they’re in a nice position against most things you’ll shoot at.

Army Comp

A typical army is going to be a Troops choice, an HQ, at least one scoring Elites choice, a dread, and then another unit to taste. When I played Olloth this week, his 1k army was two tac squads, a praetor, two contemptors and 5 of his unique infantry. That’s a pretty well balanced list. You can also consider flooding the board with infantry and just taking too many guys for your opponent to reasonably deal with, or going really elite and taking a RoW that lets you be all terminators or something.

Anyway, that’s some general advice for spess mahrin in ZM. I’ll do an Auxilia version later this week.
