you live in a contextless sea, a hollow void. a place where we judge each horrific US military intervention by its individual merit, and not by what happens every time

when the next war ramps up you’ll be there with a rational take. supportive because we have to be just like all the past times

Well most recently I was meeting with a range of organisations as part of ongoing case building efforts around war crimes and other violations in Yemen. This week I'll be picking up the Ars Electronica Prize in Austria and then using the prize money to fund the development of a VR project about the extrajudicial shootings of Palestinians in Hebron, with the hope of being able to use it in the future to allow witnesses to crimes and atrocities to visit a photo realistic recreation of the environment the violations took place in, allowing them to give accurate statements without the trauma and danger of visiting the real sites. Then in September and October we'll be holding a number of workshops in the US with people from wide range of backgrounds, including activists and journalists. You?

this is a fascinating question to me because do you think somebody here in the US ordered up a ton of 7.92x33, did they then ship it on to Syria, how many laws did they break, and why on Earth would all that have been the best way to arm some people?

nearly all the 7.62x33 i see for sale is PPU, which is made in Serbia, so i figure it fell off the truck in Uzice without ever crossing the Atlantic. but if you did, you'd be committing some big time federal felonies what with the material aid to terrorists, on top of whatever international poo poo you might get dinged for. Arms sales to Syria are expressly embargoed by the US government, as well. you'd get *so* hosed up if you did this.

but still, why use a 70 year old museum piece with hard to find ammo instead of basically anything else?

edit: apparently they are/were going for cheap in rebel-controlled areas because nobody had any ammo. surprise!

my guess is they have been sitting in some eastern european warehouse for decades because importing them to the US was a no-go as they are machine guns, and some especially unscrupulous arms dealer dickhead figured why not. judging from the pics, a lot of these are in unused/lightly used condition, but just stored terribly, based on all the surface rust. i've seen older Mosin's in better condition after spending nearly a century in cosmoline.

quote:

This is not the first time that NED funds have made an appearance in Central America’s largest country. U.S. Congress created the NED—as a non-profit, private NGO—in 1983 at the height of the Cold War. The NED was designed to promote democracy overseas, and it was funded through the U.S. congress to remain autonomous from U.S. foreign policy. From 1984 to 1990, the U.S. NED spent roughly $15.8 million dollars to fund civil society groups and to political parties, most of them opposed to the Sandinista government. In 1990, against all odds, Chamorro defeated Daniel Ortega, and ushered in three consecutive terms of conservative leadership.

NED has expanded a great deal since 1983. Today, funds from the NED support civil society groups, election observation efforts and democratic political parties around the world, including in Africa and the Middle East. In fact, in the years leading up to the Arab Spring, the U.S. government used funds from the NED to nurture civil society organizations in the Middle East and Northern Africa.

yes, the national endowment for democracy. something that’s not the state department. v independent.
the NED does publicly what the CIA used to do privately

quote:

The Endowment played an important role in the Iran-Contra affair of the 1980s, funding key components of Oliver North’s shadowy “Project Democracy” network, which privatized US foreign policy, waged war, ran arms and drugs, and engaged in other equally charming activities. At one point in 1987, a White House spokesman stated that those at NED “run Project Democracy”. This was an exaggeration; it would have been more correct to say that NED was the public arm of Project Democracy, while North ran the covert end of things. In any event, the statement caused much less of a stir than if – as in an earlier period – it had been revealed that it was the CIA which was behind such an unscrupulous operation.

NED also mounted a multi-level campaign to fight the leftist insurgency in the Philippines in the mid-1980s, funding a host of private organizations, including unions and the media. This was a replica of a typical CIA operation of pre-NED days.

And between 1990 and 1992, the Endowment donated a quarter-million dollars of taxpayers’ money to the Cuban-American National Foundation, the ultra-fanatic anti-Castro Miami group. The CANF, in turn, financed Luis Posada Carriles, one of the most prolific and pitiless terrorists of modern times, who had been involved in the blowing up of a Cuban airplane in 1976, which killed 73 people. In 1997, he was involved in a series of bomb explosions in Havana hotels, and in 2000 imprisoned in Panama when he was part of a group planning to assassinate Fidel Castro with explosives while the Cuban leader was speaking before a large crowd, although eventually, the group was tried on lesser charges.
