The Economist ran a terrible article this week about a study about transgender teens that had major methodology issues. It mentions this... At the very end of the article. Why bother publishing this? It seems like every time The Economist runs anything about trans people, it's always negative and poorly done.

the recent issue (#41) of the The Baffler is out online finally and my thoughts are thus:

Hits include

what could be a contentious Adolph Reed piece on black celebrity and uplift that is just loving super good

a Nathaniel Friedman article that quite succinctly frames out La Zona de Succ in the context of successive presidential administrations. Usually this guy is writing about SPORTS and sure enough he threw together some thoughts about NiKaep just today.

Misses include a meandering Russell Jacoby (30 years down the road wow) essay about... diversity and its malcontents? I lost the thread of his argument and realized I still had 6 pages to read holy poo poo. Also some nonsense about video games as art wow shocker! which... I guess the author is Old or has lived in a cave for ten years.

The theme of the issue is "self-care" and how the modern super-atomized individualistic incumbency of such things is dumb and bad which I generally agree with.

Maybe about a 7/10 this time around.

a couple issues of n+1 ago there was an essay about terfs by andrea long chu that i thought was pretty good. she has a new article in the chronicle of higher education about a MeToo case that has been rocking academia lately because the abuser (who was obviously guilty) got the support of a lot of big feminist scholars like judith butler

https://www.chronicle.com/article/I-Worked-With-Avital-Ronell-I/24441

quote:

The course was called “Outrageous Texts.” Like most purportedly edgy things, it was less edgy than it imagined. In practice, outrageous mostly meant some dead white dudes with weird sexual hang-ups. Sometimes we mixed it up; the dudes were still alive. When we did read women (four of the 15 writers assigned), Avital still mostly talked about men. Her lecture on Valerie Solanas’s SCUM Manifesto, like the introduction she wrote for Verso’s edition of that book, focused on Nietzsche and Derrida.

....

Academic celebrity soaks up blood like a pair of Thinx. A letter to NYU’s president, Andrew Hamilton, a draft of which leaked in June, argued that Avital’s “brilliant scholarship” qualified her for special treatment. The 51 signatories included giants of feminist theory like Judith Butler and Gayatri Spivak, as well as my department chair — and the professor who emailed to “encourage” me to play nice with Avital. (Butler has since issued some tepid regrets.)

Meanwhile, on social media and on their blog, the queer-studies scholars Lisa Duggan and Jack Halberstam dismissed the blowback against Avital as neoliberalism meets sex panic meets culture clash, straight people apparently being unable to decipher the coded queer intimacy of emails like “I tried to call you a number of times, unfortunately couldn’t get through, would have liked to leave a msg” [sic].

That Avital’s defenders are left-wing academic stars is not particularly surprising if you’ve spent much time in the academy. The institution has two choices when faced with political radicals: Ax them, especially if they are graduate students, or promote them. Make them successful, give them awards, power, enormous salaries. That way, when the next scandal comes along — and it will — they will have a vested interest in playing defense.

Here's an article on that story that's pretty :stare:

https://www.salon.com/2018/09/08/a-witch-hunt-or-a-quest-for-justice-an-insiders-perspective-on-disgraced-academic-avital-ronell/

quote:

I have saved a letter from a student who was close enough to Avital Ronell to study her in detail. He was an older student who had completed training as a psychotherapist. He had wanted to write his dissertation under her guidance. After one year, he gave up, disillusioned, and left the department. I quote from an E-mail he wrote to Professor Ronell :

quote:

From my interactions with you and observing you
in various settings, you give the impression that you suffer from a well-known mental illness referred to as malignant narcissism in a borderline structure ...

There are clear clinical descriptions of sadistic object relations. You may get some sense of why your criticisms of students are so often felt to be destructive and disillusioning: you appear to be unable to control your sadism. Don’t you realize that the metaphor you expressed to me in front of other faculty, that you liken your role to that of a Procrustean bonsai master who prunes and places wires on her students, probably points to a destructive, violent and sadistic phantasy that is only worsened by the self-satisfied relish with which you related it? This disorder, were it found to
be present, would also account for why you sometimes seem to me slightly unkempt. These comments are meant to be helpful. I hope you will seek out a proper professional evaluation to identify whatever
the problems are and have them addressed. I am concerned for you and I hope you will take this caution seriously ...
This student had the financial means to leave. Other students were not in such fortunate positions. They were dependent on Professor Ronell’s approval if they didn’t want to put their stipends at risk. How quickly this approval might disappear she made crystal clear. As soon as a student’s admiration was deemed lacking, Avital Ronell withdrew her support. The department became a hand-selected group of disciples. Whoever didn’t fit in left voluntarily or was pressured to do so. One such student said to me by way of farewell: “Avital never should have been made chair of this department.”

In that email, he essentially accuses her of being crazy. She is now a victim of gaslighting. The proof of this is in how he presents his diagnosis as for her own benefit, the hallmark of gaslighting.

new issue of The Point showed up, I'm actually grudgingly coming to appreciate my sub more and might not cancel as I originally was thinking with the new year.

they publish a bunch of (forgive my lack of a better more nuanced term) weird poo poo that falls well outside my wheelhouse that initially I couldn't be arsed with reading simply by dint of its obscurity or extreme tendency towards navelgazing. but I'm accepting more and more of the esoteric works as actually challenging and mentally expanding in a Good Way. not in like a Both Sides way because gently caress reactionary conservative garbage. yes it's a UofChicago publication

a v good succinct mashup of Meek Mill's and Paul Manafort's contemporaneous run-ins with the carceral state

a truly lovely examination of the ebb and flow of the cultural perspective on black classical musicians[/url]

here's something I didn't enjoy, this guy's (never heard of him) consideration of "socialist" theory on punitive justice. I put the quotes because there's an almost absurd level of tonal and terminology shift constantly occurring within his essay that is either... dadaistly intentional?? or (far more likely) the result of a lack of real grounding in actual socialist theory.

anyway piss tape is real

i don't think its a spinoff at all? unless the website is a lying bunch of liars:

The Point posted:

The first issue was conceived by three University of Chicago graduate students in a basement pub in the fall of 2009. Today The Point is mailed to subscribers around the world twice a year and is distributed to bookstores and libraries across the United States and in select international locations. We accept submissions for the print magazine and website on a rolling basis.
