The Ork codex is due in Orktober (get it?!?), and we should start to see details later this month. There's no confirmed date on the GSC codex yet, but it's generally assumed to be around Nov-Jan.

But have some blog links where I did some more work preparing for Kill Team in spite of me constantly having 7 day in a row work strings keeping me from playing anything. I also talk some weak poo poo about the Discord.

You will also see 1 and a half assembled Gorkamorka forts and a handy link to a pdf outline of all the essential rules to Kill Team. Enjoy them and quit being a tryhard about hating creepy anime poo poo.

:siren:NOVA Trip Report Part 1:siren:

This was my first NOVA and I had a blast.

I had no real intentions of going to NOVA until I saw all the hype in the thread and figured, why not, since it's only a four hour drive (spoiler: I am a lazy piece of poo poo and ended up getting a plane ticket the day before instead). As such, the narrative was already full and I had zero desire to play competitive 40K. So I signed up for the Recon Skirmish and later a Kill Team Pod when that became a thing.

In retrospect, maybe I was lucky that the Hyatt was fully booked. I booked a room at the nearby Residence Inn (literally a block away) and that was great. Free breakfast in the morning and it provided a zone of respite from the con craziness.

This was my first convention and I was really not sure what to expect; we hear so much about toxic hams and what have you that I was worried it would end up being an uncomfortable environment. Fortunately, I was completely wrong! Compared to conferences I've been to for work, there was about 75% less vaping and 700% more gender diversity. I was briefly furious that the Manhammer Primarch Model was on display for the official painting competition, but it got removed, so NOVA is cool and good.

The highlight of the trip, by far, was meeting so many goons. I got to meet up with lots of cool people on Thursday and even though I wasn't in the narrative (which seemed to be the most goon-attended event), I was able to spend as much time as I wanted with other people rather than wondering the convention hall alone. I can't stress enough how great it was to hang out with goons and see people's armies in person, share beers, talk about games and other things, etc.

I will definitely be returning next year and will do my damndest to get into the narrative. The only real negative for me was staying up so late. I stick to a rigorous 10 PM to 6 AM sleep schedule and so staying up until 2 or 3 several days in a row definitely took its toll, but it's only a few days so gently caress it.

***

As for the games:

I signed up for all four narrative recon skirmish games but only played two. They are inconveniently scheduled during prime lunch and dinner times and so I opted to spend time with people, eating dinner, rather than playing the night time games. Also, the whole thing felt a little pointless. Theoretically, the recon missions contribute to the larger narrative and provide cool stratagems to the side you're supporting if you win. However, at no point could anyone tell me which side I was supporting so it just felt sort of disorganized. Regardless, I got to play two games of Kill Team and that was fun.

I played Deathwatch and brought 12 models so that I could select a Kill Team appropriate for the mission and opponent's faction. This worked out great and the game will be a lot more interesting once everyone is doing this (I did not play anyone who had an actual roster, though a few people in the finals did). The NOVA missions were great and when we arrived we were given a deck of GW-produced Secondary Objective cards that were usable in the various missions. Most missions had 7 secondary objectives from which you could select 3 and score each one 3 times. This felt a lot like objective cards from Shadespire and really added a ton to the game, creating yet another layer of decision-making both when building your team and actually playing the game.

My first game was against a Space Marine team with a mix of scouts and tacticals. It wasn't a great team, opting for flamer over plasma and I don't think my opponent had played a ton before. We played the vital supplies mission, which has 5 objectives and progressive scoring, with 1 point for holding 1 objective, another for holding a 2nd, and a 3rd if you hold more than your opponent. I also took the secondary for a VP if you hold the center objective. I then proceeded to always hold more objectives than my opponent and held the center and ended up winning 14 to 4 or something along those lines. The highlight was when my stormshield-wielding combat specialist charged into 3 of his models, including the leader, and took a plasma pistol shot to the face, and a bunch of flamer shots and tanked it all. He then proceeded to pop the enemy leader and stayed stuck in combat the rest of the game.

My second game was my least favorite game at NOVA. Mostly because I played a literal child who was clearly unhappy when he wasn't doing well and because he fielded an entirely unpainted team, with some models not even including arms. It was a team of guardsmen and scions, with 4 Heavy Volley Guns and 3 Grenade Launchers, as well as 3 basic lasgun dudes (I think). We played running battle, which awards 1 pt for 1 objective, 1 for holding more than your opponent, and 1 for holding the further objective from your deployment zone. For this, I ran 2 reivers, a naked man, frag cannon vet, and my storm shield dude. One of my reivers was a veteran so I used the pre-game tactic to advance into his deployment zone and then executed a turn 1 charge during my move on his leader. I was unable to hurt the leader but when he fell back on turn 2, I executed him with my heavy bolt pistol. I lost my frag cannon to heavy volley gun fire on turn 1, along with my storm shield guy so I thought this was gonna go south early. However, he stuck to his deployment zone all game and I held more objectives than him all game, as well as scoring Cut off the Head (kill the leader) early on so I built a sizeable point lead and won by a large margin. One of my reivers spent turns 3 and 4 tarpitting his heavy volley guns, which relieved a lot of pressure, and my reiver at the center fired pot shots with his carbine all game, which was largely ineffectual but he also never took a wound.

This is already super long so I will write up another post later on the actual competitive pod I played, which was also super fun and against 3 completely different kill teams (unliked SafetyFactor who played Tau 3 times in a row).

Everyone was really awesome, and I'm sorry that I've already forgotten the links between real names and forum handles. OhDearGodNo that really sucks that you felt pressured, especially during the Apocalypse game, and I agree that it seems like the implementation of the Warlords was really odd. Overall I had a wonderful time, and I really appreciate how supportive everyone was after I was on such a down note about loving up my varnish. The games themselves ranged from amazing to lop-sided insanity, but I feel that's more 40K than the narrative itself. Some of the disorganization was rather irritating (particularly the point values not being accurate), and I still have no idea WTF the actual storyline or battle was. As far as I can tell Humanity loses a lot but it doesn't matter. Maybe that's more for the Warlords than everyone else. What matters is that almost every person I played with was really friendly and easy going, and the games were a lot of fun. The two best games I played were the closest. I had a great game against pink Eldar which came down to a single combat, and then the doubles game with Felime was fantastic.

This is what I brought for a total of 2500 points.

Imperial Knights - House Raven
1 Knight Preceptor (Stormspear Rocket Pod, Heavy Stubber, Gauntlet)
3 Armiger Warglaives (Heavy Stubber)
3 Armiger Helvarins (Heavy Stubber)

Deathwatch
1 Watch Master
1 Primaris Watch Captain (Auto Bolt Rifle, Power Sword)
3 Primaris Kill Teams (5 Intercessors with Auto Bolt Rifle, Power Sword, Grenade Launcher and 1 Aggressor with Boltstorm Gauntlets)
5 Hellblasters (Plasma Incinerators)
3 Inceptors (Plasma Exterminators)

I typically spent the 2 CP to give the Preceptor the 4++ Warlord trait and the Helm of gently caress That Guy in Particular (Helm Dominatus). When fielding the Primaris I liked to make the Watch Master Warlord with the 5+ CP regen, spend 1 CP to make the Primaris Captain deep strike, and then also give the Primaris Captain the Beacon Angelis. That lets me deep strike the Captain, Inceptors, and then draw in the Hellblasters.

My first game was against Thousand Sons at 2000 points. The combination of Preceptor and Armigers is REALLY loving brutal, particularly the Warglaives. I won that game after getting first turn and focus firing on his dreadnoughts. Nick was one of the friendliest guys I've ever played with and I look forward to hanging out with him again.

My second game was 1000 points, so I brought a fairly balanced list. Mostly Primaris, a couple Armigers, something that would be fun to play. My opponent brought a Castellan and two Helvarins. In House Raven. Cue three turns of the Castellan re-rolling all 1s and annihilating my force with casual impunity. I didn't have a chance. That said the guy was really awesome (I want to say his name was Jason), and in hindsight I should have made an alternate 1K list just to have a chance. It's unlikely that the Preceptor would have survived against a Castellan, but it was worth a shot.

I missed the day doubles game so I could learn some air brushing techniques from White Metal Games. Awesome seminar.

My third game was an epic 2500 point fight against Space Wolves. He had a combination of foot sloggers, dreadnoughts, and a few Armigers. I got first turn and unfortunately his forces just couldn't withstand the alpha strike, particularly with the Preceptor moving forward to get within high intensity range. Jason was a really, really great opponent and we had a ton of fun while we played. I routed him but it we both enjoyed it. I had a lot of success using the Primaris Captain to deep strike in a lot of overcharging plasma to wipe out Bjorn and a squad of squatters.

Game four was 1500 points against Katie's wonderfully painted bright pink Eldar. She and her fiance' Scott were great people and I hope to play with them again. This game was, without a doubt, the best game I played all week. It was incredibly tight and went all the way down to the last turn, where I didn't fully commit to an assault and her Warlord survived to give her the win. Definitely an intense, awesome experience. I feel like it would have been less fun had I brought my Knight.

Game five was 1500 against another Knight player, Oty. This time I left the Primaris on the board and brought all my Knights. Oty had two Gallants, some supporting Armigers, and a small AdMech detachment for CP generation. I got first turn and managed to take out his first Gallant. Second turn he charged forward, dealt 12 wounds to my Preceptor, received 24 wounds from the Preceptor in response, and then dropped the CP to allow the Gallant to fight again and kill my Preceptor. Unfortunately I still had my Armigers and they proceeded to sweep across the table and murder everyone.

Game six was a doubles 1500 point game with me bringing Knights, my ally bringing Deathwatch, and facing against Felime's guard and Jason's Space Wolves. We agreed that if I brought my Knights Felime would bring his Shadowsword, and what happened as a result was a ridiculously fun game that ultimately ended in a tie. I made a huge mistake in not considering potential bottle necks in the terrain, and Jason did a great job of blocking one route with a ridiculously pissed off Space Wolf dreadnought. The game revolved around moving a small vehicle that generated victory points the further it got. Felime's team didn't move far enough to get any victory points in the first turn so we blew it apart, and in the end it was a tie. Probably one of the coolest, most amazing ties I've been a part of. That said CP regeneration and Kurov's Aquila are bullshit.

Then we have the Apocalypse game. I posted this picture before, but I want you to look at it again.

The sides were balanced, with each player bringing at least 3000 points and two players occupying each of the 4' wide by 6' deep table sections. Deployment zones were 12" in. However there's one problem. The ends were wrapped around, meaning that the corners had four players.

See those purple guys? That's me. See the other side? That's 3000 points of Khorne, 3000 points of Tyrands, WAY MORE than 3000 points of Tau (including a Manta), Felime's 3000 points of Guard, 3000 points of Eldar, and 3000 points of Blood Angels. And here I am being the corner. The only reason I got to play 3 turns was because we went first, and while the game was fun (I actually loved the chaos) it kind of sucks to spend half the event not doing a thing. I could easily imagine that being an even more negative experience for players who had a chance of winning a prize in the narrative if they secured a lot of objectives or killed/saved a lot of civilians (the orange dudes on the board). It also meant that the players in the corner, assuming they didn't have a lot of speed, would get left behind as the flank just swept through. In fact I believe the only two players without a model left where those in the end like myself.

I also had a chance to talk to the painting judges. They gave me a lot of really, really encouraging feedback about ways to up the quality of my army and take it to the next level. Things like blending the model in with the base using pigments, adding just a little more contrast to the model by bringing out the raised parts, and some really good criticisms of the Preceptor. One of my favorite bits of advice was that the judges don't know how many points an army is, so if a particular model isn't up to the same level as everyone else just leave it out. I knew I wasn't going to win, but I appreciated hearing that the only reason I wasn't a Tier 1 army was because I didn't have a good display board and one of my Hellblasters had a visible mold line.

Overall the event was a lot of fun, and I'm absolutely committed to going back next year (family and work permitting). The quality of the board was amazing in part due to the generosity of Chris (the guy who also brought the Manta), my opponents were all wonderful people to play with, I learned a hell of a lot about a game that I haven't had a chance to really play too much because of all the painting I needed to do, and the overall environment was wonderful. I still have no idea about the back story or how my actions contributed meaningfully to Humanity's crushing defeat, but that's largely meaningless and just an excuse to get some great games in. I'l

Also my buddy Eddy was a photographer for the event and got some great images of my army. I particularly like this one.

From this, the only thing I didn't run at all was the naked bolter dude (he was there in case I couldn't squeeze in everything else I wanted) and the heavy thunder hammer dude. It's such a cool weapon but my match-ups were such that any time I considered bringing it, trading the hammer for a maul and 3++ always made sense.

I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money, money, money.
I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, wear Reebok.

Any goons going to Da Boyz in WNY? I might swing by and hang out, I won't have a fully painted army by then, but I'm sure there will be plenty of locals I've played with.

It sounds like you had a great time, Beer.

Funny, it made me want to never play apocalypse.

My personal favourite was the Tau Manta taking up an entire board quarter by itself.

I never get to play, so it's just me wanting a few big models.

It looks extremely cool but how does it move on such a crowded board?

And don't say very carefully

JUST CAN'T SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT HOW MUCH I HATE GAMES WORKSHOP!
It pretty much won't. Both for lack of space, every player's turn, an the numerous ham arguments that will come up as turns extend to hours.

Honestly it's pretty simple, the movement phase is resolved in 3 steps.

1. Indicate the path that the manta is moving.
2. Make very loud vroom noises. If there are models blocking the path you declared then additionally make a lot of gun noises, like vwooom vwoooom, patatatatatatatata, cha-GUN cha-GUN, krrrrrzooooow, and so on.
3. Grab all blocking models and toss them out of your way. Might makes right and there's nothing bigger than your loving manta.

Well, first it starts to tip one way, then the leg buckles and it drops, and as it drops the other legs also go. Then, finally, the tanks underneath carry it forward as communal turret.

Apoc can be fun so long as you get seated with folks you can hang out with while the other team gets their poo poo done. I felt sorry for the goons that were stranded so far away from Chill Corner.

Is there one or two or 10 armies that are considered like the peak of 40k paintjobs? In the world and also in this thread
