It's a paid rental, but The Endless is so loving good. Indie sci-fi/horror/mystery about two brothers who escaped a UFO death cult 10 years ago and are drawn to go back.

I rewatched it and burst out laughing at the intro where it sets up this convoluted backstory about ancient alien teleporters and deserted alien cities, and it’s just like... guys, it’s a military base that is loving around with teleportation and accidentally taps into the Event Horizon dimension and stuff starts coming through. Like that’s it. That’s all you need. Miss me with this “evil chromosome” bullshit or whatever.

Demons and Hell dimensions must not have played well with the focus groups. That's the only explanation I can think of for such a lame and unnecessary re-write.

What are the best first contact with aliens type movies? I've watched Arrival, Contact, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Thing, Aliens, and some other major ones (first three recently) and I'm still sorta left wanting a better one. Arrival was probably my favorite for its relative thoughtfulness. Anyone got any recommendations for standouts similar to those?

Annihilation was Natalie Portman that got a theatrical release in the US but straight to Netflix elsewhere. You might also be thinking of Extinction with Michael Pena, that went straight to Netflix.

They could have handwaved away the hell stuff by avoiding calling it hell and demons directly, because until the new Doom game made it awesome, UAC could've been a company that didn't directly want to say "yeah we're using actual hell as a fuel source". The movie is slightly better if you pretend you didn't hear any of the "evil chromosome" trash.
