I care a little. It really seems like the Tablet piece was a sloppy hitjob and we should be expecting more and more of this. Conversations with candidates coming from within DSA should probably be more proactive about addressing possible lines of attack, because sloppy or no I think it could have been headed off at the pass. Salazar's defense that it was due to miscommunication should be addressed proactively, but also it's a bit of a nothingburger. Part hinges on a "gotcha" line of attack with regards to her claiming to be an immigrant but having been born here and been raised both in America and Colombia. The other part questions the sincerity of her conversion to Judaism which we'll see a fair bit of I think in the future too as the divide over BDS gets more fraught. I'm always interested in what we can learn from these campaigns, like with Kaniela Ing's failed bid. I don't have much a personal stake in Salazar's race, sure, but if we want to do the same locally, we're likely to face pretty similar obstacles.

Salazar's claim to Sephardic heritage to me reminds me a lot of something that happens pretty often in Oklahoma, which is the "my Cherokee grandmother" thing, which you might recall was part of the attack on Elizabeth Warren. Whether or not the "family lore" is accurate or in dispute, it doesn't really change the core of your identity. In OKlahoma's tribal community, blood quantums have (save in some certain legal definitions) nothing to do whether you are considered indigenous by tribes, it's about how you express yourself and participate in their tradition. I mean, this is something I take a personal criticism of Warren as well, especially when she originally claimed herself as a Native American, but ultimately that's different in intent than say the Tablet hitpiece and follow-up stories, where it's, as Golden Bee rightly pointed out, intentionally race-baiting and questioning her identity, just like when people mockingly called Warren "Pocahontas."

The American Indian grandparent story is usually a play to disclaim the negative aspects of whiteness while leaving one’s actual whiteness unquestioned, and it at times becomes a strategy to elevate race above civic identity as a white scumfuck could claim a blood connection to the soil of the nation that antedates the constitution. Ie “this is our town and you don’t belong here.” I don’t think being a latinx Jew in New York works the same way, unless we’re saying that being Jewish isn’t at best a potential weakness to be exploited (just like how Zionist racists are exploiting it now)?
