Washington Post posted:

The Trump administration said Thursday it is preparing to circumvent limits on the government’s ability to hold minors in immigration jails by withdrawing from the Flores Settlement Agreement, the federal consent decree that has shaped detention standards for underage migrants since 1997.
The maneuver is almost certain to land the administration back in court, where U.S. District Court Judge Dolly M. Gee, who oversees the agreement, has rejected attempts to extend the amount of time migrant children can be held with their parents beyond the current limit of 20 days.
But under changes proposed Thursday by the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services, the administration said it would issue new regulations that “satisfy the basic purpose” of the Flores settlement and ensure migrant children “are treated with dignity, respect and special concern for their particular vulnerability as minors.”

“Today, legal loopholes significantly hinder the Department’s ability to appropriately detain and promptly remove family units that have no legal basis to remain in the country,” said DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, in a statement. “This rule addresses one of the primary pull factors for illegal immigration and allows the federal government to enforce immigration laws as passed by Congress.”
The proposal sets up a new immigration battle in court, and comes less than three months after the Trump administration’s short-lived attempt to halt an increase in illegal migration by separating children from parents who entered unlawfully. The practice was widely condemned and forced the administration to reverse course and regroup.

Even if someone said they saw something, why are they drawing their weapons and handcuffing people? There's no indication the kid got violent or threatened anything, cops escalating the situation only makes things riskier for everyone except themselves.

The way (American, mostly) cops draw at the slightest perceived provocation is ridiculous and dangerous.

It depends on what the person told them. If they said "hey that guy has a gun and just carjacked those people" a felony carstop and cuffs is appropriate procedure.

If they said "hey those people are having an argument" it's not appropriate.

One of the reasons american cops draw their guns all the time is because the United States has decided to be a heavily armed society. Cops get shot dead responding to minor calls. So when a witness states "that person has committed a violent felony" well, that changes the approach.

Edit: the last time a London Metropolitan Police officer was killed by adversarial gunfire was 1995, responding to a fairly routine burglary / assault call.

From 1995 onwards, the NYPD which is roughly similar to the Met has had 20+ officers killed by gunfire.

American cops shoot people way out of proportion to relative firearm ownership rates in other countries. Doubt there's good stats on drawing weapons - which is unfortunate, they really should justify in writing each time that happens - but it's hard to imagine that's not skewed in the same direction. There's a definite statistical difference in how most police forces in developed nations deploy force compared to US cops.

The idea that police are supposed to deescalate situations even where it might result in some personal risk seems to have gone entirely out the window.

So im curious: youre a cop right? Whats the general Cop attitude toward the 2nd Amendment? From the outside looking in, I always conflate Cops with other right wing issues and assume theyre all about the 2nd....Which seems rear end backwards given that cops use that as an excuse to mag dump on anyone darker than a 1st Gen iPod.

Secondly, given that the majority of registered gun owners in this country are law abiding citizens, doesnt this imply the cops are terribly trained on dealing with a armed populace? After all granting Carte Blanche on drawing and shooting because the populace is armed is kind of disturbing and easily creates a "us vs. them" division.
