Scholars are some of the most pompous and pedantic people I've ever had the joy of meeting.
I hope the vast majority of people playing the western release are on PS4 because the Steam numbers aren't anything great and I'm going to be real sad if DQXI doesn't do well and SE gives up on DQ in the west like they did during the SNES era.

They probably should have gone the Yakuza 0 route and made the price of entry more reasonable. It's hard for your average steam user to drop 60 bucks (I mean really 45 bucks, hopefully no one in this thread paid 60, but people don't always do research) on a game series that they have no idea about.

People also go "wait what there have been 11 of these? They must suck I guess, I've never heard of it, or at the very least I won't understand the series at this point".

Then there's the whole anime thing.

Honestly if I didn't see the excellent Kotaku review for this game I probably would have passed it up too.

now im no brain genius, but the game has been on the front page of the PSN store, gotten numerous online ads and received postive reviews from almost every single major north american games outlet so like, it's prob. fine

I don't think that's how it works actually, since you're buying it from a download service. As far as I know you're just padding the pockets of the download service, not the creators, by spending more on a game once it's on the service itself.

Yeah, one of the first things I reforged was the healing card to +2 which gives 7 HP per turn. It's super good early on. It isn't enough by itself if you're playing with Super Hard Enemies on though, bosses will still hit you for half your health and 7 HP won't be enough to take you out of the danger zone.

Its 10 per turn at +3. Makes non-draconian runs even easier.

The MP restoring one goes up to 3 per turn too. Mine is at 2 and it doesn't sound like much but you basically hit MP equilibrium with only a little restraint.

I'm playing with extra strong monsters and it feels good and that's cool, but what isn't cool is it feels good with these OP accessories. I kind of resent them but I didn't use them from the beginning and I enjoy it more with them so c'est la vie.

If people picking up the game now can't get them that's crummy.

The mp regen card at least is findable in-game, though not early on. Dunno about the health one. You’ll eventually have access to even stronger regen from equipment either way though.

Yeah I dropped the HP/MP accessories pretty quick, the game kept giving me Medicinal Herbs I just didn't need so it felt ""incorrect"". Maybe I'll reforge them and use them again once the numbers get a lot bigger though

Not sure how far along in the game that is since I am not there yet, but when I was researching how to make the very first "kill a guy with this pep ability" quest less RNG based I read people saying that you can swap out people who are pepped and they will stay pepped until you swap them back in.

You forge stuff by finding the recipe, having all the ingredients, and using the forge.

You reforge stuff by having equipment that is not +3 and perfection pearls. That let's you try to upgrade to a max of +3.

At least early on, there are no limited ingredients, you just need to farm them. You get pearls each time you forge something, and can sometimes find them in chests.

So you're never really wasting resources, just (potentially) time.

He's a huge piece of poo poo but afaik the Japanese games always use the midi music. The Western versions aren't inferior in that regard.

I imagine they continue to use these particular instruments because they're iconically Dragon Quest, just like the sound effects. Every new game or remake after the snes sounded like this.

IMO the western version is superior in that on top of actual spoken dialogue Squeenix seems to have a lot more liberty adding sound effects on top of the music track than they did with the Japanese release. Compare the intro cutscene from Japan, which at times sounds like a silent film to the Western version.

Still can’t get over that not only did Squeenix lip sync the dialogue in game but they also did it in the CGI cutscenes too, clearly a lot of work went into the Western version.

How are you guys using Veronica? I gave her a whip to let her be able to use it as AoE/debuff stuff when she can't cast spells but she's just too squishy to do real attacking. Her sister is a mainstay in my party as the healer/buffer so I already have access to stuff like the demon bane attack and all on her wand tree. Should I just double up and make Veronica a glass canon mage or do whips pay off better down the line to supplement her?

Yea I really guess I should just use the super explicit mage to her full potential, the whips are nice but A) I know I'm getting a dude who can use them anyway soon and B) the debuffs can't make up for the loss of nuclear hellfire...

Gumdrop Larry

I use Veronica with a staff. I feel like AoE is already covered by either spamming bang or sizzle since she never comes close to hurting for MP. She's definitely squishy as hell though, but again a fight has never gone on long enough to where's she's burnt out and needs to take melee swings for me.

I ultimately settled into a team of sword and shield hero, staff Veronica, spear Serena and claws Jade and I feel like I really wreck poo poo but in general it's definitely a slightly softer team compared to the dudes on the bench. Serena just having gotten kabuff at what I think was 23 has alleviated that issue a lot though. The only thing I've seen that I feel like I'm missing out on having experimented with everyone are some of Rab's skills, particularly his healing rain.

Do the prizes at the casino change throughout the game or is there a second one later on? I'm currently sitting on 300k tokens after getting disgustingly lucky on the slot machines (fun fact, if you get free spins while in silver spin mode, your silver spin count doesn't decrease) and the casino rewards seem unusually underpowered for a DQ game.

Correct. You can use sword and shield, dual wield, or use great swords, but it’s all swords
