I feel like it doesn't have as many Heat actions as 0 or K1 but the ones it does have are really good

I'm sure it doesn't. You're down to a quarter as many fighting styles as K1 and a sixth of 0's.

It gets better if you go AST. You'll eventually pick up a couple of recurring NPC buddies who also threaten people by opening books.

Yakuza 0 has a karaoke minigame, and it breaks out into a fully modeled, choreographed...thing. It’s great. One song in particular is a sappy ballad and the bit that goes along with it is Kiryu in a fancy bar getting all drunk and nostalgic and weepy over a photo of the orphanage he grew up in.

Kiwami has the same minigame, and the same song, same being all weepy at a fancy bar, only now it’s a photo of Kiryu hanging out with Pocket Circuit Fighter from 0. :allears:

ELECTRONIC OLD MEN RUNNING THE WORLD
In Yakuza 0, everything is subtitled as it's all in Japanese, with the name of the speaker always listed. Until the character you're playing learns someone's name, it'll say something generic like 'Threatening Man' or 'Dojima Goon'.

In one sidequest, Kiryu meets a small boy, named as 'Innocent Lad' in the subtitles who is too scared to buy something from a fancy vending machine in a dark alley. Kiryu volunteers to help and shock horror, the cool vending machine sells girly mags. After a bit of stealthing, Kiryu can go and buy it for him and upon giving it to the kid, his name in the subtitles changes from 'Innocent Lad' to 'Sophisticated Lad'.

Just gotta keep walking down that road.
Also the stealth part (the "dubious quest" as the game puts it) is only required because Kiryu, a badass ex-yakuza, will get too flustered to continue if someone sees him en route to buying it.

He also imparts some important wisdom to the lad before they part ways, and you can tell from his face that it's a lesson he had to learn the hard way.

In Kiwami you meet a character with the name, voice, and likeness of a real-person called Shinichi Shinohara. But before you catch his name he's referred to as "Man with a Big Head".

That’s the best way to experience Y0. It’s an extremely well-done prequel and when you get around to playing Kiwami all these stories from almost 15 years ago will carry a lot of added weight because of the groundwork they retroactively added in 0.

They do it really subtly too, there’s one sub-story for each protagonist where you briefly meet a character from 2 and the protagonists are like “wow I can’t shake the feeling that I haven’t seen the last of this guy!!” and in Kiryu’s version a fortune teller makes very vague statements about his ultimate fate but other than that it feels like a very self-contained story while you’re playing it, you don’t realize how much it’s setting up 1 until you actually play Kiwami

I like how in the Majima Construction side game, every villain is a Japanese wrestler.

And I don't mean, like, this guy shares a likeness with a Japanese wrestler (cause a lot of characters in the game do), I mean if you see a villain named Masahiro Chono:

you better believe he's modelled after Japanese wrestler Masahiro Chono:

Every single villain in that sidestory is a wrestler. I remember Yakuza 6's clan creator doing that too, and I love it.

It's a JRPG, so there's no time limit on sidequests expiring. And check the map regularly in the first two chapters, they don't really tell you when the roadblocks disappear and you can pause and use items so pick up some energy drinks when you get a chance.

Only two people in the back row are not pro wrestlers.

It's funny too because it's not like they're using their likeness for it. They're actually the wrestlers. Same name and everything.

The other villains are Keiji Mutoh, Riki Choshu, Genichiro Tenryu, and Tatsumi Fujinami.

Hey now, newer Yakuza games have skipped the whole 'modelled after' part and just included live video of actual pornography actresses (in not-porn situations), so...that's a step...in some direction.

MrJacobs posted:

To be fair, no one was in six. I mean yeah some characters show up in the beginning and some in the end, but 6 was an entirely Kiryu/Haruka-focussed story that eschewed a lot of the series' past characters to tell a much more personal story, which I appreciated.

Man, Fume Knight in Dark Souls II is going straight on my all-time greatest bosses list. He's my idea of the perfect Souls boss: initially overwhelmingly aggressive and difficult even to hit without being killed in a single sweep of his giant sword. But you slowly learn his patterns, understand when and in which direction you have to dodge, under what circumstances he does certain moves, when it's safe to attack him, when you can manipulate him into giving you room to heal and then (about 200 attempts later) *BAM* the sweetest victory I've felt in gaming in ages

Souls games are so great. Even the most vicious, impossible boss is at a disadvantage: the player can learn, study, remember and form tactics while they're stuck with the same moves and brain the first time you fight them as the last. It's just a matter of understanding the mechanism.

Don't ask me, ask THQ Nordic The company that isn't actually THQ, they just bought the rights to all their games and the name and started calling themselves that.

Also, I know this isn't the generally accepted opinion but my least favorite is definitely 2. I just think it plays way too clunky and I really dislike the characters and the story. Also the Boss is probably the worst in it where they act like a straight up psychopath way too often.
