The Electoral College is a sham mechanism dating back to a time when the powers that were didn't trust a bunch of illiterate farmers to elect the "right person" to office.

Basically, they set it up as a panic button so the public voting a total buffoon into office could be aborted at the last second. It failed miserably in its one job.

It was actually more about slavery and allowing the slave states to "properly" count 3/5ths of people.

Pillbug

Nice haul. I can beat it though. When I bought this, they marked it as a single socket instead of the whole set, so I got a $100 set for about $6. This was 15+ years ago, and the joke's on me now; I've bought so much Proxxon since.

The electoral college system was set up specifically to allow illiterate farmers to have a disproportionate amount of power to their population, in order to maintain slavery as an institution.

One of my favorite movie tidbits is that Burt Reynolds' reaction to Big Enos and Little Enos when they meet in the beginning of the film, was completely genuine. It was his first time seeing them in costume and that shot was used in the film.

I remember asking the girl on the till in HMV if she could check the system to see if they had The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas.

The look on her face made it clear she was not familiar with Mr Reynolds' venture into the musical genre.

I went this morning to try to score the set that STR got, and they had tons but only marked down to $75.

Bummed, I went to HF and used coupons to get a temporary 3/8 ratchet set and the crappy 24 pack of free batteries for a whopping $4 total. I know it's crap but I lost lots of my 3/8 stuff when I got divorced, I think they were in the ex's old Explorer from where I took the steering column out to replace the shift tube. And I was too bummed about not getting the STR deal to get anything nicer today.

I remember having access to a subforum that was above GBS called The Terrordrome or something similar. It had a few strange posts in and the subtitle was "POST HERE TO BE BANNED" or similar.

It was only accessible on an old Android 3.xx tablet running Something.apk, the offshoot that grew out of Awful.apk when Awful had a lull in development. 2013-ish?

Buddy with the LS400 purchase just said that, under hard acceleration, the car sometimes stumbles and afterwards has a rough idle for a few minutes until it sorts itself out.

Other than basic maintenance stuff that we're going to tackle in a few weekends (plugs/wires/cap/filters/MAF cleaner), it sounds suspiciously like he's got the bad caps issue. At least a full set of rubycon replacements is only like $30, and I can tackle it in an afternoon. Toyota ended up using defective caps in their ECUs for like 10 years, from 1990-2000, in nearly every vehicle. Yay.

What year LS400? It wasn't as common in the last few years of the LS400, but was still around. Pretty much any strange issue that you can't fix can be related to the ECU capacitors, it's pretty amazing. I never had to bother trying this, but ClubLexus has a thread on checking the ECU before you replace the capacitors.

It's a 94, which is peak capacitor failure from that thread.

E: from another thread I had found on the issue. It's insane how that this bulletproof car has one Achilles heel, the ECU capacitors. Normally an ECU is the one thing you never touch when troubleshooting a car, because it either works or it doesn't. I've already got the rubycon kit coming in from digikey, and can spend an afternoon pulling the ECU and replacing them. Considering it's Arizona and my buddy is the 2nd owner (was garaged up until about two years ago), I think this may be the ticket for some of the little niggles he's been having.

$75 is still a pretty decent price for that set; Kobalt has solid stuff, and a lifetime warranty, no receipt required (well technically you need it, but they don't enforce that for socket replacements so long as you bring in the broken socket and aren't going to a store in the ghetto). I'm pretty sure the $32.25 was a pricing error, or meant for GF's store only - I saw that price briefly online, but it jumped up to $75 within an hour or two. GF's boss let me know it's been marked as "NPI" - non-productive item - meaning (a) it's discontinued and (b) it's marked down significantly to get them gone. GF's boss snagged a set for her BF too; he's also in the "DIY unless it's something that requires multiple days of work" camp.

Someone else rightfully pointed out the lack of extensions or U-joints; I have 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2" u-joints thanks to my AI SS gift, and I have a few 3/8" extensions already, so I just need to nab a couple of 1/2" and 1/4" ones.

Can't bitch about a $4 set though!
