6 is mechanically very similar to 7; the story is a lot less charming than 5, but job systems are fun and it's the apex of the series' style in 16-bit. It's also lighter and leaner than 7, for people who think 7 is too long and slow.

9 is basically a modern take on DQ3. It's very much about customization (every armor piece is even modeled), party-building, and gameplay, and it has a massive amount of optional content including a ton of superbosses based on major enemies from like, every previous game in the franchise. If you like making characters and messing with synergistic combinations and stuff, it'll be a winner for you.

I actually wanna play DQ9 again but can't find my copy. I may grab a new one this week.

I put Sylv on the sidelines since anything he can do, someone else can do better. Maybe it changes later in the game, but his niche seems to be status effects (which I guess Charm effects maybe?), but enemies don't live long enough to use status effects on and bosses (I assume) are immune to them. In most normal fights, you can use Veronica's Boom family of spells or twin boomerang Erik to clear things out quick, with Jade and Hero doing single target damage if necessary. It's pretty disappointing he doesn't get Twin Dragon Lash since that would have given him a damage move. It's the same problem I have with Rab. In a game where you can freely swap dudes in and out during combat, hybrids are inherently weaker.

bosses aren't immune to status effects altogether; i got to slayer of the sands last night and throwing dazzle on it made it far more manageable

When you die you keep all the exp you've earned but you lose some of the gold you have on hand (I assume it uses the standard of half your gold), so keeping it in the bank will prevent you from losing it.

It's a series tradition, was much more useful in the older games when dungeons could be far more dangerous.

I'm trying to to craft a +1 weapon for a quest and just realized that the forge has a 5 min cooldown if you load a save after using it.

Someone on the developer team must really hate savescumming to put that in a single player game.

What level are you? The caves before the boss have a lot of metal slimes, I went in there at level 20/21 and after fighting a good chunk of the enemies on the way to the boss I ended up with everyone at level 23.

I think that's where the game expects you to be as the enemies stopped giving me xp at that point.

I'm at level 16 right now. I didn't encounter any metal slimes in the couple of fights I did leading up to the boss. Guess I'm just going to put on a podcast and grind it out a bit.

Starting to wish I'd gotten the PC version so that if someone eventually finds a way to mod in the ability to turn on Draconian Quest modifiers mid-game I'd be able to do that :v:

Anyway I'm hoping that normal-strength enemies but the "don't give me EXP if enemies are weak" option combine to make a decent balance for me that won't make me grind to avoid being smashed, but also won't let me get overleveled just through normal play (a pet peeve of mine). The Draconian Quest system would be the perfect way to handle difficulty if you could enable them without restarting, though.

It's not like they're tied to trophies, either. I could almost understand if there was some sort of marker you get for finishing the game start-to-finish with Draconian Quest modifiers but since there isn't, I can't imagine why you're not allowed to enable them later on if the game starts to feel too easy or you just want to shake things up.

Fun slot machine thing I just got.

Hit 5 Free Spins in a row which gave me 30 free spins, and then 3 spins later hit Metal Mode.

Turns out that if you're in Metal Mode and you have free spins, your spins don't count against the number of Metal Mode spins you have left until you run out of free spins, which means staying in Metal Mode for free for the duration. Ended up pulling over 40 times in Metal Mode and making 40,000 tokens.

You can circumvent this a bit by using multiple save slots. The autosave that happens when you make camp also counts as its own slot.

So say you make burner saves in slots 7, 8, and 9. Return to the title screen, load slot 7, try forging. If you don't get what you want, return to the title screen and load the autosave then try forging again. If you again don't get what you want, return to the title screen and move on to slot 8. Then the autosave again. Then slot 9, and so on. When you run out you'll have to start over from the making saves step.

In a game where you can freely swap dudes in and out during combat, hybrids are inherently weaker.

A couple repeats of things people already said, but:

A: Status effects absolutely work on bosses, and very well, too. I'm assuming this games works the same as many others and enemies, including bosses, have differing resistances to different status effects (e.g., the Clown King is really weak to Sleep and can be hit with Dazzle relatively easily, but it's almost impossible to Charm him)

B: Sylvando has Oomph, which is itself a really big deal

C: Whips have a bunch of damage/status hybrid moves. I've had a good time with the one that attacks AND Dazzles, for example.

D: You can't 'freely' swap dudes in and out, they don't get a turn on the round you swap them in on. It can be hard to tell, since this game works on an initiative system and there's no visible division between rounds, so it's possible to be in the middle of the fight and unsure of where you are in the turn order, so Serena swaps in Erik and then he gets a turn one or two actions later (because you were near the end of the round and since Serena was near the end and Erik rolled high, the round changed in between their actions and he got an early turn)

E: The only thing Veronica has on Rab, IMO, is her easy access to area damage with Bang, Boom, etc. Rab's got good single-target damage, the same access to Sap AND Blunt, and he can cast all the same badass heals that Serena can, and has better defense than my Jade, Erik, or Serena. (Have not confirmed if characters actually have the somewhat-randomized stat growths in this game) He's for sure not 'inherently weaker,' he just covers a few different bases, and covers more of them to boot. (My Rab uses Heavy Wands; he's almost certainly weaker at magic if you have him with the Claws... but then, he has the Attack to use them decently, too, and can sap MP with them just like Wands)

I liked 6 more than 5 as far as gameplay goes. 6's job system was fun and the only real issue I had was that the boss fight that unlocks class changing was ludicrously hard when I played a patched SNES version. No ideal if the mobile port is equally annoying. 5's story is much better though.
9 was fun but different. The co-op system was awesome though and I wish more RPGs had something like it. The job system was a bit busted though because since skill points weren't tied to jobs you could get everyone a dozen or so levels in a bunch of jobs and have 100+ skill points to burn and that's a hell of a thing early in the game.
