I’m not even past like the Kingsbarrow in the beginning of the game but I love the little callbacks to previous game like the woodcutter who got transformed into a dog who says Ruff, going back in time and meeting a younger version of yourself, etc. I haven’t played all the DQs yet so I’m sure I’ve missed some references but the ones I got hit me right in the feels

Further tips in case anyone missed it: L2 acts the same as X so if you turn the camera follow option on, you can play the game with 1 hand. Great for sipping coffee or even a beer.

Hard mode is actually really hard...bosses using desperate attacks wreck me, and the Gallopolis area boss took way too many tries.

One of my favorite things in games/specifically RPGs is when the game fucks around with actual mechanical stuff you've become comfortable with in order to serve the narrative . It's no Nier:A or anything but it's really surprising to see a Dragon Quest game pull the rug out from under you in a few ways. What a sick game.

edit: specifically, post world tree the game just being like You are no longer the Luminary. and straight deleting a huge section of your skill tree lol. It felt kinda cool though, and at least I was like, well I have a bunch of points to put in greatswords now. also how in every splash screen and loading screen animation and throughout the intro movie it shows your first 7 party members everywhere but surprise, you get 8! loving epic. also just plain pleased to learn axes are in the game lol

status effect spells are usually useful in dragon quest games especially against normal monsters

Many debuffs work on bosses, and it's easier than ever to keep track of since they added a button that shows you party status and icons for enemy status.

Probably after you get the last orb? That's when the high roller area of the casino started working for me, haven't checked back in on Gallopolis yet

I totally forget what they were but I beat silver on my first try so you might as well, it only takes a couple minutes

One of them (silver, I think?) gives you the prince's armor as a costume.

You can press right on the horse racing menu and there are hard versions with different rewards that I haven't done yet.

I don't really like how they control but I guess I'll have to do em for the costume

Status effects too,I got lucky and poisoned the spider boss on turn one. I might restructure Eric's tree a bit so I can get one of those 6x damage skills

I’ve never played a DQ game but this looks very awesome. How quick are common battles completed? Is this a good game for someone new to the series?

The pace of the game is good, it's not super fast but it respects your time (the autobattle is cool you're supposed to use it). And yea you can jump right in. It's written in such a way that it feels differently depending on how much you know the series but it never throws something at you that's only cool cause it's a callback.

Combats don't take too long, especially if you set your other party members to AI in traditional DQ fashion. Boss fights can be lengthy, though.

I don't have a lot of experience with the series either (I played 8 and some of 9) and I think it's rad! So you should be fine

I almost always set my whole team to Follow Orders, but the AI is reliable and does the right thing. It doesn't quite have the advantages of some older games in this regard, since there are no characters who can really only pick Fight, and you don't enter all the commands up front so healers can't cheat on your behalf.

Aww, I liked healer cheating. Also liked all the little weird things comedy chars would do if you left them on AI.

they don't take too long and you can [[and probably should imo] leave your party on auto battle for most battles except bosses. the options you get usually work pretty well.

If you go to System Settings there's a section for Draconian Quest and you can disable the window there. I don't know why it's hidden away, but there you go!
