You're right, it is functional in that it contains music in an intelligible progression. It is also grossly uninspiring and frankly a bit schmaltzy with that lovely electric guitar which lacks any impact beyond enducing an eyeroll.

Archer's Theme is dogshit.

It's still the weakest opening though.

Late season DS9 reworkmay be worse but not worse than late season Enterprise rework, so they keep the title.

It's fine, though, if a bit cheesy

The only good thing about the DS9 opening is it gives me enough time to pee. Heck, I'm probably conditioned to check myself for "need to pee? y/n" any time I hear that boring rear end intro.

I think I've said it before, but part of what makes it so bad is that the closing credit's song, "Archer's Theme", is a perfectly functional, if not particularly great song, and would have worked ok as an opening song. Here are the opening credits with Archer's Theme over it.

Conversely, Star Trek II is one of the best submarine movies.

For sci-fi submarines, other than WoK, you cannot do better than:

Frank Herbert's Under Pressure, which is a psychological novel set on a special ops sub on a dangerous mission late in an extended WW3.

Glen Cook's Passage at Arms. Arguably Cook's best novel, this is Das Boot in space done perfectly. The tension of space combat hasn't ever been done better.

Oh, I absolutely loved it as a kid too. It’s just extraordinarily bad in retrospect, especially after you know literally everyone told Berman it was a horrible choice and he still insisted.

That’s not bad, really. I don’t remember it from Generations, and it sounds a bit ‘overly grandiose Discovery Channel space documentary’, but it works with that in mind.

I really liked the ENT mirror 2 part episode. They didn't try to treat it serious, or even give some flimsy way to connect it to the main show and characters, they just let it be this fun little one off thing with its own intro and everything. Thats how the mirror universe should be treated, a fun little joke.

Last Enterprise intro post I swear, but Jerry Goldsmith did a theme for a Disney ride in early 2001 that would have been a good fit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-3PBEAwOj4&t=13s

It should start around 0:13 and it picks up around 0:39. Anything from that first minute and a half would have been great.

Discovery's intro is far worse than Enterprise's.

Though I guess it does fulfill the old early TNG "sonic wallpaper" musical direction.

That song is probably, somehow, a bigger impediment to my watching through Enterprise again than any other single thing. The show improves, it makes changes, it goes places, but that piece of poo poo never gets any better. Even if I skip it every time, I know it’s still there. I’ll always know.
