That’s how a villain like Omega should come back. A crucial character in Time Lord history whose return could shake the foundations of the universe asunder... menacing a tin dog.

My only gripe is that it was a wasted opportunity to say he "regenerated and kept the same face" instead of "regenerated into a second identical body". I'd have enjoyed that more as a silly line that's a reference to a real episode, along the lines of "nicked it off the Master in the Death Zone"

Little late to the End of Time comments but I was just thinking that I didn’t like the whole HUNGRY Master thing and really hated it at the time. But looking back on it while it’s still kind of a hot mess, it redeemed itself a lot at the end if not solely from the “Master Race” line. Yep the Master once again threatens the universe just to be a dick to the Doctor with an awful pun.

He looks really good with that white hair and just wants everyone to know it. The only thing wrong with The End of Time is there's not enough pop music.

I think the biggest problem with "End of Time" is that it tries to do more than it has enough space or time for. An episode is spent on the subplot about the rich guy (and make no mistake, David Harewood's an actor I like and it'd have been great to see him in a more substantial part) trying to get immortality for his daughter takes up a lot of time, so the triumphant and terrifying return of the Time Lords amounts to Timothy Dalton standing on a platform for 10 minutes waving a Nintendo Power Glove about. Granted, they're 10 very entertaining minutes, but it still feels sort of disappointing even in retrospect.

A quick look into some of the spin off stuff is facinating - they're very strange, because they are Doctor Who fan films, but with creator officiated monsters, and appearances by Who actors, even former Doctors, mostly playing different characters. They even originated the character of Kate Lethbridge-Stewart in one of them. It's a strange loop of fans creating content when the show is basically dead - not just doing films, but radioplays (which would eventually evolve into Big Finish), and documentaries and interviews - and then some of that making its way back when the show revives. I'm not aware of anything comparable to that. They're still making some, even, one's even coming out next year. If he had known that he would be writing up to the end of Capaldi's run there's no doubt he would have saved it for then.

With the exception of the console, which looks a little cheaper and a little more like a prop you might see in Doctor Who during the 70s, that looks like the J.J. Abrams version of the Tardis to me. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it looks very slick.

Doctor: [gasping] That Cyberman blast did it. I’m regenerating but without the Time Lords I’m not sure what will happen. I’ll probably just die. Ack! [The Doctor falls over. His companions, grieving quietly file out of the Tardis.] [Unseen, a strange regeneration energy fills the control room. Jodie gets up from the floor] Doctor: Oh brilliant!

If he had known that he would be writing up to the end of Capaldi's run there's no doubt he would have saved it for then. Okay but... why is it in bad taste? The alternative is Handy being this consequence-free trick that makes no sense as to why someone hasn't tried it to be functionally immortal already. Heck, it raises the question of why the Doctor hasn't tried it before now, since the whole "can regrow something within the first 15 hours of a regeneration" seemed to be a well known fact to him judging by the way he put it in his first episode. The whole thing is just a bit too overly convenient and has absolutely no repercussions for the Doctor other than him getting to lecture Handy at the end of Journey's End. Honestly, the whole thing seems to have resulted in a net gain for everything involved. It gave us a great new character in the form of the War Doctor, gave us a great send-off for Eight, and made Ten's breakdown over the course of the specials leading up to "The End of Time" have more gravitas, making it seem less like he's being selfish and unreasonable about a fact of life for Time Lords and instead casts it as him becoming frightfully aware of his own mortality as he's approaching what he believes to be his final life cycle. Steven Moffat isn't a perfect writer by any means and I have a lot of issues with him as a person and the things he said, but. He saw his opportunity and took it, and it worked out pretty well for pretty much everyone involved. So the guy's guilty of... really wanting to write something, and taking totally reasonable measures to achieve it that only add to what came before. How is that in bad taste??? And I'm not saying Moffat has never written anything in bad taste. He definitely has, in ways that vary from vaguely to overtly offensive. That stuff is worth calling out. This? This is something I can't help but see as anything but a good idea that worked out pretty well.

Yeah, if all you have to do is chop your hand off right when you regenerate and keep it handy (yuck yuck) to make your next regeneration not count, surely all the Timelords would have been at it. That would have been a funny vision of Gallifrey in End Of Time though, if everyone had a hand or foot just chilling in a formaldehyde jar on the table

The 15 hours thing doesn’t hold water at all from a continuity point of view. Christmas Invasion starts in daylight with the TARDIS crashing, which for Christmas Eve in London means it’s about 3pm at the absolute latest for there to be that much light still. Sunrise is at about 8am on Christmas morning, so you’ll have a bit of light before that, and you can have people standing on buildings around then. But with the Doctor’s swordfight very definitely in the sunlight (and quite high in the sky), you’re still definitely in the 18+ hour ball park by then.

The execution could have been better in the end, but yeah, I'm with you. I don't give a drat that Moffat wanted to write away the 12-regeneration limit and the means by which he did it more or less worked and resulted in more good than bad.

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I'm glad Moffat took that story hook and ran with it. Yes, it was selfish of him to do so, he was clearly trying to tick every "Big Moment" box from a list he probably wrote when he was 9. But it's done, he told a good story around it, so I'm fine with it. However now that it's been done, I see no reason to revisit it down the road with the 25th Doctor or whatever.

I think it's cool that he took that "big moment" and deliberately didn't make a big moment out of it. The Doctor doesn't even bring up that he's on his final regeneration until halfway through his final episode, and it's just a throwaway line as part of a conversation about something else. That and the way he just gets new regenerations in an instant basically communicate that the whole regeneration limit thing is pretty unimportant(at least to the Doctor). Though I suppose you could say that taking this famous piece of lore and using it as justification for an episode where the Doctor dies of old age is indulgent in its own way as well

Capaldi's line in Doctor Who and the Space Spiders is a neat little throwaway line too, where he says,"Who knows how many times I'll regenerate? I have no idea! Maybe forever?"

that just makes me imagine a scenario where the Doctor's regeneration is sent into overdrive and he cycles through a new incarnation every five minutes, each time played by a different British celebrity, before ending with one final sequence where he's Christopher Eccleston again, only for him to scream at the end of an absurdly short sequence that "THAT F@#$ING FIGURES DOENSN'T IT?" before he's Jodie Whitaker again
