Does anyone have opinions on the Draconic quest challenges? I've turned everything on for my first run through the game and I'm about ready to tap out after about 5 hours. Losing No Armor and Shypox seems to be the way to go cause man, gently caress both those things.

I'm also thinking of moving Sylvando out of whips. They're not bad, they just haven't particularly great either. I mostly want status effects out of him but the proc rates for whip skills seem way lower than status effect spells.

That said I've heard his 3 hit whip skill is good but I haven't gotten it yet. Maybe I'll move him to daggers if I move Erik to double swords???

I'm generally not using Sylvando to hit things anyways, he's much more valuable as a support with his non-weapon abilities and spells, and his 3-hit whip skill is the best attack for a support character since it removes buffs from the enemy hit. Swords probably do more single-target damage and allow him to use a shield for defense if you're having trouble keeping him up. I have no idea why anyone would use knives with him.

Here's the secret to making Sylvando a good fighter.

Higher base damage than the holy sword itself. Maybe Sylvando was meant to be the legendary hero all along.

Also, is it just me or does dual wielding seem a bit lacking? The offhand damage usually seems fairly negligible.

It's good for Erik, of course, since he gets to do full dual wielding damage (eventually). I've had good success with it for Hendrik with axes, because axes do so much single-hit damage, adding an additional hit to his moves actually improves them considerably. Of course, this means you're not using his drat good shield techniques, so it's basically about choosing between him being a megatank or an absolute madman berserker.

I think they probably all suck except for the harder monsters.

The original 4 in the Japanese version were poorly executed. Most of them don't really do anything, and Shypox lit reads: Add RNG to the game. RNG doesn't ever enhance.

I really just use whatever boosts charm the most on Syl and fire off That’s Amore whenever he has a turn free to use for dealing damage. Usually hits as hard as one of my melee guys attacking and comes with chance to paralyze.

They are all worth playing, except for maybe 2 at this point. Most of them will have a very similar feel. Here's the best version of each:

1-3 mobile: Resolution scaling is hosed on 1-2, they fixed it in 3 but removed all the monster animations. Thus, I recommend to play the 1-3 SFC remakes on an emulator (bsnes is the most accurate), full translations exist. GBC version of 3 also has a monster medal grind collection thing and an extra bonus dungeon related to that. It's obviously a visual/audio downgrade from SNES but it's really impressive what they accomplished on an 8-bit platform.

4-6 mobile: direct ports of the DS games. They did a good job with these, buy and play with confidence.

7 & 8 3DS: I've not played these as I don't have a 3DS but I hear they are the definitive versions

9: I have played this one, seems like a lite version of their MMO maybe? Rather short single-player campaign but an endless map-grinding system and multiplayer stuff which is now dead. Your characters are blank slates and all armor/weapons are visible, a first in the series. Overall it's a bit of a DQ departure - almost seems like a spin-off game - but it's not bad or anything.

10: JP-only MMO. I heard that we didn't get this (and why WoW still doesn't have a JP client or servers) because SEJ has a partnership with Blizzard to release the latter's games in Japan, and they didn't want each other's MMOs to compete with one another. Although that theory kinda falls flat because FF14 (and historically FF11) is one of WoW's best competitors.

I think it's also worthy, as a separate project, to play 1-8, in order, original versions only. Despite DQ's tendency to not deviate much over the years, you'll really appreciate the advances they made along the way. Skip JP FC 1 & 2, though - play the NA localizations as they enhanced them in various ways. Lots of people poo poo-talk 2, but holy gently caress is it an improvement in every way over the first. It's also amazing what they did on the FC/NES with 4. 7 on PS1 will be... difficult to get through, but 8 on PS2 is fantastic and a good series' capstone.

I think that hits the nail on the head. I wouldn't actually have a problem with shypox if the rng had a near equal chance of a good effect, but as it is it's just a dice roll to see if you get hosed over.

Pretty sure multiplayer should still work since it was all local co-op gameplay. The online services won't work though which is a shame (no bonus units, or outfits from certain DQ 1-8 characters) but it's not a deal breaker.

man, metal slash is completely useless on hard mode. realistically the only way to kill any metal slimes but the basic version is crits.

It's pretty underwhelming on normal too. Sure it always hits, but it also only does 1 damage and claws hit 2x while also having a metal killer of their own. I went right for it on the hero thinking it'd be at least a 2 damage hit but nope, every hit against metal slimes has been for 1 damage. Better off refunding the points and dumping them in to Miracle Slash or Dual Wield. Though the 2nd hit on dual wield does some real bad damage unless you have a lot of attack (ie: it kind blows on dagger-using Erik against non-sapped enemies). The hero and Serena have an anti-metal pep power and it did all of 2 damage to a metal slime. It's a pep skill ffs, it should outright murder a metal enemy.

Crit skills will always be the best method to hunt metal enemies though. I think the only game where metal cut was good was Dragon Quest 6 on the SFC, but metal cut + metal masher passive was more or less an instant kill against metal enemies. Or against party members using the metal babble job.

Though speaking of metal slimes can you encounter metal kings or even metal babbles in the deserted island in the north east that has only slime enemies area? Managed to get a couple fights with healer + 4 metal slimes but that was it. Though I did kill 3 metal slimes in 2 turns because nobody missed a single attack in 2 turns, and jade (and Erik) hit 2x per turn.

This game needs an option where dialogue with voice acting autoscrolls. Even like 100 hours in (okay, probably like 60-80, I've left the game running a lot), having voice acting but also old school text boxes that you have to manually page is breaking my loving brain.

I can tell you that the stuff in the casino shop at the first casino was lame by the time I decided to make a bunch of tokens at the second casino and come back because I forgot what was there. So maybe? I got to like 35k in the first casino, obviously didn't get any of the more expensive items. I think I've heard people say just wait until the third one? But I might be wrong.

There's a sweet whip you can get from the second casino that does full damage to every enemy it hits that makes whips worthwhile IMO. It's probably outclassed in postgame but i'm not there yet

Erik is the only one who can steal, which makes crafting WAY WAY easier and means you can easily keep all your characters in top tier gear, which gives him a reason to exist. He also can deal full off-hand damage while dual wielding which I thiiiink only he gets? He's a really strong damage dealer for me (better autoattack damage than Jade, and if I can get a status to land he competes with Multithrust too).

What's the better 6x dagger skill to pick up for Erik, the venom based one or the sleep/con? Seems like you'd be able to hit the venom more compared to sleep but if there's a good confusion source later that's probably better than poison unless poison for once in an rpg doesn't suck.
