Ain't easy looking this eggstraordinary.

my wife has informed me that the landlords are planning to dig some sort of trench (moat???) to help keep the rising waters at bay

we have a slight downslope into a wooded area outside of our back door but water tends to pool around the air conditioning unit during even regular rainstorms so i guess this is to mitigate that? will update with moat pics when possible

I mean, that's one of the things drainage specialists do, so it might work. Unless you're in one of those places where you're gonna get 8 feet of rain.

It could work if done correctly. The Netherlands is pretty much just a giant bit of the ocean floor that is somehow kept dry by a complex series of dams and ditches

The Dutch are getting rich off of these storms btw, they get hired by local US governments after every disaster.

I'm probably going to be fine. Did a survey of my house and we can weather anywhere from 6 to 10 inches. Might be uncomfortable if we lose power for a week or more but it won't be deadly. All our lines are buried and we're pretty close to the nearest power substation. Our neighborhood only has young trees, too, which aren't likely to cause much damage if they get uprooted. We're on a hill as well, far away from the nearest flood zone. We're prepared for a few days of heavy rain and winds. As I said, a prolonged, uncomfortable time without power is our major concern.

Is there a place where you can bet on where you think the eye of a hurricane will make landfall?

Wilmington will be wiped off the map, even if it doesn't make official landfall there. Possible landfall near Charleston, SC, either official landfall or a secondary strike.

how cool would it be if the sound of a hurricane was like a really loud house track, so like if the storm was over you for 36 hours it would be a single 36 hour long deafening david guetta track

I'm in Charlotte, not the coast. That's why I think Wilmington won't exist after this storm. They're going to have it sit on their faces for 36 hours with winds over 100mph and the entire Atlantic ocean pissing in their mouths.

I'm safely in central PA hiding like a sewer duck in the woods. Evacuated at 3 AM yesterday got ahead of the traffic and stayed there. A minor cat injury was sustained in the course of the evacuation but they have been to the vet and antibiotic has been attained for them.

This is my biggest fear even though it doesn't look like we'll get it too bad here. When Irma came through last year an oak in my neighbor's yard fell on power lines that took out everything on the street for five days. I'm worried about a repeat of that or, worse, an oak landing on my house or my car.
