The regular music is alright. I'd say overall the sound design of CT is decent but nowhere near the level of the FF or DQ series entries of the time, which were probably best in class. It didn't suffer too much from just bad sound programming like has been an issue in more recent games. Granted, the game scope at the time was much smaller so it was harder to screw that up.

Ideally you only get subtitles for speech in other languages as Lara learns the language

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory had an option for guards speaking the local language instead of English. It was neat for a second playthrough.

Don't set the immersion to max or else the game locks you out until you get a Master's Degree in Archaeology.

It was pretty good but the story was overly dry and too unambitious.

The reviews I've read say that Lara still speaks english when you select that option, and the natives somehow understand her, and she somehow understands their language, even though she isn't bothering to speak it.

The developer, Acquire, created Bravely Default and Bravely Second. I loved both of those games to death, their combat was so amazing. So I was super disappointed at how much of a downgrade Octopath Travelers combat was. No features included such as increasing the random encounter rate or turning it off altogether, or automatic battles. It was a huge let down.

it seems like jrpg comfort food so far. but the path actions make towns and interacting with npcs way more engaging than the genre norm which helps make up for the dungeons being bland baby mazes

as far as battle mechanics go, boosting and breaking enemy guards is pretty cool imo. i don't think being able to turn encounters off would go very well with how the world map is laid out though. you can go anywhere you can survive from the start, so when you can find powerful equipment in remote towns, the dangerous enemies roaming around are the only thing keeping you in check

CT’s battle music is pretty droning but it feels like a prototype for Xenogears. Like Grahf’s theme is like a combination of Magus’ battle them and that one epic boss battle theme that plays for a few fights in CT.

Well Final Fantasy and DQ built on the sound effects from their 8-bit games, pretty much directly in DQ’s case. I really like the blips and bloops in DQ and happy they insist on keeping them.

No, after Microsoft took over, the whole franchise has become pretty embarrassing.

Well, that aligns with the vibes I was getting. Which was, like, "normal" kinda vibes.
I’m playing Harmony of Dissonance and I don’t really know why. I’m pumped about playing a Belmont in a Smash and I fixed my Retropie, and Harmony was the one GBA title I skipped. I want to play with a whip but already there’s a bunch of turn offs that have me looking at the rest of my library. I wish my Rondo of Blood ROM worked.

Eh, I always had a soft spot for it, the boss themes are great though imo

The battle theme in Cross is one of the most irritating songs and it's made worse by having to hear it again and again and again

I played all of the GBA/DS Castlevanias and Harmony was without a doubt the worst by a significant margin. It was initially exciting because it was such a graphical/movement upgrade from Circle of the Moon, but it ended up feeling really half baked imo. In retrospect Circle was probably in my top 2 or 3, especially if you were playing it on something with a back light.
