I had an idea for a short story if they do another ‘Aliens’ short story anthology - it focuses on a scientist on Thedus Station, and he just has... the shittiest day possible. No hot water in his apartment, work overload from his boss, malfunctions in the lab, everything. At the end of the day, his ship assignment even gets switched up, totally derailing the rest of his year because of the planned transit time. What else could go wrong?

Turns out the scientist is the science officer that Ash replaced on the Nostromo, and he just dodged the biggest bullet of all time.

Reminds me of an old Taoist parable:

quote:

There was once a farmer in ancient China who owned a horse. “You are so lucky!” his neighbours told him, “to have a horse to pull the cart for you.” “Maybe,” the farmer replied.

One day he didn’t latch the gate properly and the horse ran away. “Oh no! This is terrible news!” his neighbours cried. “Such terrible misfortune!” “Maybe,” the farmer replied.

A few days later the horse returned, bringing with it six wild horses. “How fantastic! You are so lucky,” his neighbours told him. “Now you will be rich!” “Maybe,” the farmer replied.

The following week the farmer’s son was breaking-in one of the wild horses when it threw him to the ground and broke his leg. “Oh no!” the neighbours cried. “Such bad luck, all over again!” “Maybe,” the farmer replied.

The next day soldiers came and took away all the young men to fight in the army. The farmer’s son was left behind. “You are so lucky!” his neighbours cried. “Maybe,” the farmer replied.

Except with xenomorphs instead of horses.

Didnt the Colonial Marine crew get a few short stories in that book of Aliens short stories that came out where they were going on bughunts against other stuff? I remember Apone was at least in one, I think.

I know Hicks and Dietrich show up in one, too.

To be honest I haven’t read that book in its entirety yet, it just isn’t very good. The Predator anthology, on the other hand, is real good stuff.

There's an official book that says they were both convicted of murder as juveniles. That's if you want to treat a 2014 book written by a different person as "canon" to Aliens.

You could probably write some color backstory to those that makes them less "killcrazy OOOOORAH" poo poo.
Like Vasquez killed a Corporate stooge when he tried to enforce WaterRights in her hometown or Drake was framed by WY lawyers because his father was going to try and sue for catching Cancer-7 on one of their assembly lines.

A backstory in which people rebelling against the system were turned into its murder-drones would certainly be in line with the themes of the film

Wait, do you mean the Weyland Yutani Report? It’s been a while since I read that. The juvenile detention thing dates way back; I can’t quite remember where it originated, but it might actually be backstory stuff from the Kenner toys.

Speaking of ancillary books, next year we’re getting a blueprints and technical drawings book by the guy who did these:

He actually did those as an unofficial fan project, and then FOX got wind of them and made them official - and then contracted him to do an entire book of similar drawings, covering all six Alien movies. It’s coming out next year to coincide with the 40th anniversary of ‘Alien’.

Even better were the inevitable endless conga-lines of Aliens and Predators sync-killing eachother from behind.

AvP2010 is a neat game (with some fantastically brutal sync kills) but I wish the singleplayer campaigns had lined up and crossed over a bit more. The three characters cross some of the same territory, and if you’re paying attention you can map out who is where and how their actions affect the same area when another character passes through, but they’re never in the same place at the same time. In AvP2, at one point all three player characters are in the same room at the same time and it’s pretty neat.

AvP2010 is also set a bit later in the timeline than most stuff that happens right around ‘Aliens’, and the turbonerd in me enjoyed that they acknowledged the progression of military tech and even used some of the ship and weapon names from the Technical Manual that were “in development” at the time the Tech Manual is set.

AvP2010 had Lance Henriksen, but he wasn’t the only ‘Aliens’ alumni to return to the franchise for spin-off stuff. AvP2010 also had William Hope as the lead scientist in the Alien campaign, and he’s a notable character in ‘Alien Isolation’. He also narrated the recent audiobook version of ‘Aliens’.

It’s organized so there’s a progression to the artwork to reflect David’s deteriorating mental state; it starts with drawings of plants and basic Engineer anatomy stuff, then it goes to weird experiments and Engineer anatomy stuff that David likely couldn’t have acquired without nasty torture and vivisection, and culminates with insane rape/torture fantasies about Shaw. :stare:

The accompanying book with the interview with the artists is cool, too. Apparently the Shaw artwork was intentionally drawn to not match Shaw’s actual physical state when Daniels finds her remains - the thinking was that unlike the rest of the art where it’s David drawing what he’s seeing, the Shaw stuff is his imagination of what he’d like to do to her, and he just can’t decide.

The artists also said that a scarier interpretation is that David used Engineer tech to continually heal and revive Shaw so that he could torture her over and over, so the artwork is depicting things he actually did. :stonk:

Jesus I feel genuinely awful for her (yes, I know she's a fictional character, allow me my empathy). It'd be one thing if she finished Prometheus screaming and struggling like the Covenant protagonist, knowing she's in for some really bad poo poo. But the whole ending of Prometheus, the music, the cinematography, everything 'agrees' with Shaw that she's headed off to bravely discover the secrets of creation. At least the Aliens characters got to die in their sleep.

If it makes you feel any better, David’s artwork of her fate is fairly consistent in never showing her with a pained, anguished, or frightened facial expression, and his drawings also often have a pseudo-religious slant to them.

In the interview with the artists, they said they were trying to convey a sort of duality to David’s relationship with Shaw: he literally both loves and hates her, and can’t find a way to really reconcile his feelings. Like yeah his artwork of her is truly bizarre vivisection, but unlike his artwork of some of the Engineers or experiments, you can tell he venerates Shaw and you’re not quite sure if she actually suffered.

It isn’t quite the 100% blinding hatred that AM has in ‘I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream’, it’s more nuanced than that.

The editing was horrific, and it felt like a bunch of poo poo was missing. The third act is a boring mess and I wish we got what was in the script vs uh...whatever that was.

I love Shane Black and Predator movies, and I’m extremely forgiving to these things. But bad editing is the worst and I can’t look away from it.

Part of me really wonders what made that happen.

The short covered how she patiently (and maybe lovingly) helped to reconnect him to his body. There's an undeniable tenderness there, but I think it's filtered through his view that she would become the origin substance for his creation.

I think it's natural to think that he hated humanity because he surpassed them, and Weyland in particular, but would always be subservient to them in some way. But that's kind of boring. Maybe it's some kind of mania taken on by his inability to procreate, or the Frankensteinian lack of a partner. That's probably more in line with Alien themes.

People often recreate the circumstances of their childhood abuse in a more-or-less controlled environment. It's a major part of Splice--a lot of which is subtly, darkly humorous, but this theme is made clear in a scene that's not at all played for laughs.

I think he probably is mad that he can't have sex. So his experiments and the creation of the Alien contain all this pent up misdirected sexual rage, just like when Ash shoves the porn magazine down Ripley's throat.
