Given the fact that this thread hasn't had a post in 5 days, I'm guessing everybody else is as underwhelmed by Polygon's new direction for video content as I am?

I've been watching it, and enjoying what I watch. I just don't think it's too worth talking about some else's thoughts on Spider-Man.

I liked Pat's video on the fighting styles of Spiderman.

I just have no real interest in watching 3-4 minute long videos (or thoughts on games, tbh), so I'm finding this change frustrating. I hope they at least get back to the Jackbox streams and Gill & Gilbert soon.

I think it's a lack of much to talk about, as well. They used to have about ten new videos a week. Now we're lucky if it's one. Despite their constant assurances that it's just downtime, I think the new direction is pretty much just occasional heavily produced pieces and (possibly) occasional Gill and Gilbert on Twitch.

The short videos are fine, they're just not (for lack of a better word) eventful enough to go post here about like the longer streams were

I don't want video game journalism on the YouTube channel. There's a lot of that available elsewhere. I want video game adjacent entertainment on the YouTube channel. That's the transcendent content that we all loved.

Where they really hosed up was with Awful Squad, just ending it without giving the community something new to funnel into. That was a group of superfans that probably would've watched or bought anything Polygon was showing or selling, and instead of capitalizing on that, they just let them evaporate The Youtube channel is just turning into every other Youtube channel at this rate. Simone narrating a Spiderman video essay... that's so not the point of why people watch the channel, I watch for the personalities being organically funny, not reading articles out loud. But I guess videos of them having fun and laughing and being funny are not "viral" enough.

If the problem is that the old series weren't profitable enough, how does ending all of them without introducing anything new solve that problem? They're still paying everyone.

It was totally a mistake to abruptly end everything in the name of revamping the video content. They were slowly gaining a reputation as this fun, weird, irreverent comedy niche that could have continued to build organically off the stuff they did before like Awful Squad and Monster Factory. Instead they just blew it up and are doing...whatever it is they're doing now. They have no identity anymore. There are still some good videos here and there but there is no cohesion at all.

The stuff they're doing now feels like they're trying to enter a clickbait niche, but for me it's click poison. I don't want to look at any of it, I'm in it for casual goofing around with games.

It should have been obvious the end was nigh when they cancelled seo play because goddamn that was the best. Also I'm pretty sure only five other people watched it but issue at hand was really really good too

They should look at, like, Bon Appetit's channel - previously, they used to just do short recipe videos and talk about which milk brand was sponsoring them. It felt like what current Polygon is - short videos that are explicitly to the point and kinda dull. Then, they ramped up to more personal videos, more 'travel' style videos, and finished with It's Alive with Brad. Now, it's a cooking channel with a stable of personalities who draw more people in, because they capitalized on a risk while continuing to do the smaller things. Now I'm watching basically every video they post that isn't "kids try" poo poo, from the funnier stuff to the dry informational things, because they do youtube right. Polygon quickly built the stable of personalities, but has stepped away from the many series to just kinda give us the safe to-the-point short content once or twice a week. Like, we all know who Simone and Allegra and Pat and Brian and Jenna and Ashley and Russ and the lot are, but there's no real outlet for the 'brand recognition,' for lack of a better term, of any these people. I don't need new poo poo. Gimme more of the Skate series. Run an in-house tabletop game. Set up a big company trivia game - hell, just play any relatively brainless multiplayer thing, like Risk or Monopoly, and edit it down to 15-30 minute bites. We're on youtube for the personalities, just let us put on some poo poo and laugh for a while.

The videos are also this weird in-between thing where they're just talking about some aspect of the game, but they keep cutting to talking-head shots of the host in the studio, instead of the game they're talking about. It's like...why are you showing me this, you're just talking in a microphone, show me the game that your video is about instead. I wish they'd at least do more streaming. It doesn't even have to be complicated; awful squad was entertaining and it was just an unedited two hour session of them loving around with a game. The hosts are funny and have a strong rapport, just let 'em riff for some easy peasy content in between the more high-effort stuff.

Yea, the new content is just... boring compared to the old stuff they were putting out. I don't know how long they justify keeping all these people with such little output being put out.

I haven't heard a new Simone honking fit in a while. That's really the only complaint I have.

I pretty much dropped off after the last awful squad. Polygon just hasn't done anything new or exciting, and they won't even let the hosts do something to let their personalities shine. Some of my favorite stuff from them is their streams, like when jenna and simone played that coop game (the jail breakout one, can't remember its name). Or when pat and simone would stream sea of thieves for like 5 hours, thats another one of my favorites. Now its all just boring poo poo I don't want to watch, although I should get around to watching gil and gilbert.

Brand Slam and Gill and Gilbert were pretty much the last interesting things that Polygon did, and the latter didn't get fully posted to youtube, so I never bothered with it. I hope they find their footing before nature takes its course because even without the mcelroys it's a lot of good talent concentrated in one place, I'd hate to see it wasted.

Vox squanders all it's stars for playing it safe. WHERE'S JON BOIS? Ironically SB Nation has some of the more interestingly made poo poo about subjects I usually don't find myself caring about.

Even without Jon, SB Nation has been doing way better than Polygon has. The Deep Rewind series is great, I haven’t gotten around to watching any Beef History but that’s probably just as good, and the Weird Rules videos are bite-sized fun. They really should stop doing Dorktown without Jon though, it’s terrible.

Pat's Twitch streams have been pretty fun and goofy, though admittedly far less goofy than G&G or Awful Squad. Just kind of chill and wholesome. Also he sticks to a fairly regular schedule.

I also miss them posting streams to YouTube, because twitch is a site that I essentially never go out of my way to look at, so anything that gets posted exclusively to that, I will probably never see I realize this is an easy thing for me to fix personally, but there must be dozens of people like me who would watch this stuff if it found itself in front of my face on YouTube. Seems like a potential easy win for polygon, unless there’s something I’m missing

I'm not making anything that would be terrible for my full time employers to use, but even though my side stuff is technically on-theme, it'd be problematic for the company I work for's brand to try and use my poo poo, and it'd lead to heavy burnout for me to know I don't have any free time even though I'm already doing the poo poo anyway.

I’m hoping that with the Soul Calibre VI create a fighter engine being robust enough we can get Monster Factory out of retirement, or at least a series similar to brand slam.

Turns out Tara's desire in Cool Games Inc for content to be based on doing nothing and watching nothing and being nothing is truly her idea of entertainment. I think she succeeded by being the stick in the mud Griffin and Justin pushed against, creating good comedy friction. e; though now that I look the average views per video seem to have gone up. They were sitting around 12k-17k per video when releasing 5 a week, with the mainstay prime-time videos hitting 50k-150k. Now they're floating at 30k-70k on average while doing much less content. It appears boring internet channels work. Judge Schnoopy fucked around with this message at 18:49 on Sep 18, 2018 |

I'm no SEO wizard but there is a saturation point for everyone and some people will stop watching a whole channel because they update TOO frequently. I know I feel odd if I can't keep up with most everything a channel/group is doing so I may stop watching them all together. Adults are busy and can only split their attention so many ways. When G&G went to Twitch, I would have sadly stopped watching unless they brought it to YouTube. It was/is a very good show but I can't subscribe to ANOTHER goddamn service.

Maybe I’m weird but I actually like most of Polygon’s recent videos. They’re thoughtfully put together breakdowns of game mechanics or other elements that are interesting in some way. I just don’t like that that’s ALL there is. They need to keep the weird stuff too.

I got into Polygon's video stuff a while ago and it really reminded me of the old Williams Street Productions crew back in the heyday of Space Ghost and Sealab 2021. Just really weird, goofball, niche humor that comes out of nowhere, bewilders and angers C-Suite executives, and slowly builds an enormous cult following that can last for generations. Then Griffin and Justin bailed and I got busy with life. Now I come back and it's just wall to wall buzzfeed-esque clickbait. Easiest unsub of my life. Hopefully they're just setting up for the inevitable revival when they all quit en masse and go make their own creator-owned channel.

you missed a lot of really good stuff between Justin and Griffin leaving and now; it's only been the last handful of months where released content has dropped off significantly and all that's been coming out are really short super-produced videos about recent games pat's said on his personal stream that silly things are coming back thankfully (particularly, specifically G+G)
