On a somewhat-related note, I'd argue that in my experience so far one of DQXI's strongest points is that any given area is pretty small and not complicated to explore. (Along with the enemies being represented in the world.) I'm sure the dungeons beef up some later, but it helps the game that they're simple so far IMO.

More JRPG should have corridor dungeons. Like usually what they do is offer two paths, one leads to treasure and the other leads to the way forward. So if you accidentally pick the way forward you’ll have to backtrack anyway to pick up the treasure

If there are no branching paths the player may as well not have any control at all.

If the branch is something where everyone goes both ways anyway, is it really a choice?

I don't like FF12 or FF13 very much at all but FF13 has combat that eventually gets decent 30 hours in and FF12's combat never gets good so between the two I'd probably give the edge to FF13.

FF13 also has more music that I like.

Not everyone goes both ways, is the thing. Hell, on my most recent run of Suikoden 2 I usually just picked a wall in each dungeon and hugged it the whole way through, if I found treasure great, if not oh well.

I cannot recall a single track from FF12. It has the most bland soundtrack of any FF game.

A lot of it just very calming, relaxing music that makes it not very memorable. I do love the regular boss battle theme though.

The one good song in 13 was the regular boss music they used in Dissidia. Everything else was garbage tier.

Man now I wanna play a new Dissidia but like, not the new Dissidia they've been making for the past few years. Like a new Dissidia that regresses(?) back to the PSP style of fighting and no three on three poo poo.

I always thought the problem with the music was the opposite though, since you just fought enemies on the map they made all the dungeon music sound like battle themes so you spent all your time walking around with an orchestra going full on in your ear.

I recently walked into a library dungeon in DQ11 and a slime there told me it was one of those moving bookcases and stairways video game dungeons and I was like "aw man 😒" but then it turned out that while I could do a little exploring around if i wanted, progression was just hitting the one switch available to me at any time and I was like "oh that wasn't so bad 😅"

One of the consequences of skipping the PS360 consoles is that I have no idea what FF13 is like at all. I know a grand total of 3 things about it:

1. There is a woman named Lightning and she returns at some point
2. L'cie and Fal'cie are words
3. Moms are tough

Fang and Vanille had good voice actors despite the characters being bad. Same can't be said for the rest of the cast, Snow, Hope and Sazh were just terrible.

The people in towns in dq11 have dialog that changes constantly based on what's happening and there are actual nonlinear parts and it's insanely cool.

When people say "13 is just as linear and boring as jrpgs with a world map" it makes me wonder if people have actually played one

Oxxidation
Jul 22, 2007
FF13 had literally nothing to recommend it besides the combat and Blinded by Light, and combat plus one bitchin' violin track does not a 50+ hour jrpg make

the world was puddle-shallow, the characters became non-entities as soon as they were about to get interesting, and the story was a queasy mix of over-simplistic and borderline incomprehensible due in part to SE's tried-and-true development strategy of "waste all the money farting around and then frantically throw together whatever we've got at the last second"

Right, I agree, my point was more that it doesn't get bogged down in places where more complication wouldn't help it.

I think world maps rule and add a lot to jrpgs, just not generally as much in the realm of player agency.
