They already covered it but the TLDR is g-sync/freesync means your monitor's refresh rate is dynamic and is able to adjust itself to whatever the gpu provides, rather than being locked at a single fixed number clock rate that the GPU may or may not be able to keep up with based on the game scene being rendered.

A g-sync monitor's refresh rate changes rapidly to match the fps you're rendering at, so at any given moment it could be rendering effectively 48hz one second and then effectively 60hz the next, jumping around based on whenever a frame is ready.

E: Someone pointed out HDMI 2.1 supports dynamic refresh which is the same thing, but it'll be a bit before we get new monitors and TVs that support that.

I think it's nice if the graphics menu explains what settings do, so you don't get moments like "WTF is bokeh?". I watched some Black Ops 4 streams yesterday and some of the settings explain what they do with words and pictures.

Uhhh if you're using gsync you shouldn't use vsync. It should be vsync off, frame rate totally uncapped. Are you actually using displayport with your gsync monitor? And its enabled in the control panel?

Although with old old games yeah, sometimes you have to do weird poo poo.

I'm fairly sure you actually want an FPS cap 2 below your monitor refresh rate. You will not benefit from gsync if you go over. Although as we are talking 120hz+ I'm not sure how much you can notice it.

Do not use Nvidia Inspector to add an FPS cap, it will add as much delay as vsync.

Use RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) to manually cap a game to your refresh rate and it should practically eliminate input lag caused by using vsync, as well as fixing most frame pacing issues. That program is a loving life saver.

A small number of mods out there have anti-Brutal Doom scripts because it's one of the most played mods and it's completely incompatible with practically any other gameplay-altering mod. Showing the player a message saying "brutal doom won't work with this, sorry" and then quitting the game is much easier than dealing with a hundred WHY WON'T THIS WORK WITH BRUTAL DOOOOOOMMM comments. But given the inclusion of HDoom I'm sure they did it because they don't like Brutal Doom/SGT Mark, and not that actually valid reason.

Turns out I had to merely enable vsync to fix this. I still don't know why (the problem wasn't screen tearing or anything normally fixed by vsync) but someone was talking about Bloodborne's weird frame stutter in the derail and the description matched my symptoms exactly.

I don't know why but Diablo 3 had the same exact problem on my system for many years before they finally switched over to a 64-bit client. Something about leaving v-sync off caused the GPU to double each frame, so you'd get readouts of 60+ fps but with very juddery motion. Going to fullscreen windowed also fixed this problem, somehow. PC gaming basically runs on black magic stitched together with equal parts duct tape and gum.

Why is Brutal Doom so controversial? Is it because it’s so popular that it overshadows other mods that may be just as good or better, or is SgtMark a jerk? I think it’s fun and spices up old megawads for new playthroughs.

The author is a racist rear end in a top hat and the mod is popular to the point where you get a lot of people bothering other mod authors to make their stuff compatible with the bad pile of hacks that is Brutal Doom.

This is one of the things that hasn't really endeared BD or Mark to some of the stuff-makers out there - IIRC there was a period where BD fans were harassing mappers to adjust their maps for BD's balance instead of vanilla play's. In addition, at least at one point (dunno if it's still like this) the install instructions for the mod suggested setting it up to load automatically anytime GZDoom starts, meaning some people would unwittingly load BD alongside mods that conflict horribly with it, resulting in horrible bugs and the modder receiving (occasionally angry) bug reports that aren't their fault. Hence Term's habit of making it very obvious that something's wrong so he knows what's happened from the off and doesn't have to chase ghosts. :ghost:

It's basically BD++ with a ton of new weapons and enemies, and a pretty well-designed difficulty system which adds tougher monster variants as your own arsenal also expands. The newest version has been in the works for over a year now, and there's also an "official" campaign being worked on. If you want quad-miniguns and also an even bigger minigun that spitts out AP rounds then it might be the mod for you.
