I had an inspection on the white Prado and all was good, had a 525 bid in and glad I stayed up past Midnight. At last minute they amended auction to say engine noise and warning lamps on. Mat asked me If I wanted to pass and of course I said yes.

I paid $5120. This highlights how I feel about USS auctions vs non-USS ones. Mine was sold through CAA, the blue one was through USS. USS prices just seem to be higher for the only reason of being a larger house and they must get more exposure. Plus the wheels alone are worth a significant portion of the price I paid.

The people who want these wheels are everyone that's imported a Beat or Cappuccino or AZ-1 or Alto since then. I've had a bunch of people asking about them, and 3 serious offers for them. You have to import tires for them yeah, but that doesn't matter to the people who are driving these things. Wheels are a pita but not if you are willing to get them from Japan, which is where you are going to get tires anyway.

Well, Hiace is released as of 2 days ago. Called the terminal that it's at and it's in a non-TWIC area so all I need to get in is the purchase order and a driver's license. Going to download a few hours worth of podcasts and head down to Houston on Wednesday to pick it up.

Some states (like mine) allow you to apply for a transit permit. In my state as long as you have the VIN and attest that it's insured, I want to say it's $15 for a permit that you have up to 2 weeks to activate and once you use it, it's good for up to 3 days. Any licensed driver can apply for this and it's all online, you just print it out yourself. Super handy for buying used vehicles

Most of my automotive purchases over the past 10 years have been fly-n-drive. Transit plates are a great way to keep bored law enforcement from giving you trouble on the way home at 3 in the morning 10 hours from home... Haven't been looking at auctions too much in the last week, been busy as hell. Need to start browsing again. I did turn my Dad, who retires October 1st, onto the auctions so he's been sending me links for cool poo poo.

I can get a transit plate in TX but I'm opting to tow it rather than drive an unknown to me 25 year old vehicle 3 hours from the coast to Austin. I was going to have it delivered but circumstances with work and the amount of free storage I have left are making it more reasonable for me to just go get it myself. I was expecting to need an escort but my arrival notice says "Terminal is located in secured area, Terminal access restricted" and then immediately after "TWIC card WILL NOT be required." Those seem contradictory to me so I called them and asked what exactly I needed to access the vehicle and they confirmed.

So I guess I would have won the white Prado? Still glad I passed. I would not have bid that on the Safari though it was on my short list glad I didn’t waste their time.

That's a hell of a good price for that type of Safari. Manual Gran Road with those stripes, that desirable Nissan diesel and ~gold wheels~. Those routinely go for 10k USD, especially with that mileage. I still would have probably rolled the dice with that Prado, but this generation of Prado (with the 2.4) is nowhere near the desirability of the 3.0 equipped ones. If that Prado was a 1993 with the KZ in it the price would have sailed to over 12k USD. Means that if another one rolls around I can expect that price for a plain white one. There was a 323 GT sold in the US for MY88 only that was basically a 323 sedan with the FWD turbo setup. They're even more rare than GTXs, only 500 sold. They do exist, though. I made my 323 Wagon basically into a GT, using a Capri XR2 drivetrain. I'm only missing the rear discs, though those don't really matter at all on such a light car.

Both of these are beaters, the blue one didn't even run and still sold for $$$.
