I had an 88 DX as well. Loved the little flip ups. Tough car had to be put down after the wife t-boned a sunfire. Shifted the whole front clip about six inches to port but the fucker drove home.

That’s some serious Accord abuse there though. I think there’s about three generations of these cars going down as the toughest things since the W123.

I owned two 88's - an 88 LXi sedan, and the 88 DX coupe. Both 5 speed manuals.

The LXi was a tough bastard. Found out the odometer had been rolled back by at least 50k, about 2 years after I bought it (Carfax didn't exist when I got it), so it really had well north of 200k. It was also from MN, so it was rusty as hell. The only time it let me down was when the timing belt let go (thankfully at idle - a month after I bought it, and the PO had assured me he'd just had the timing belt done - mechanic told me it was original). No damage thank gently caress (and that's how I discovered Cartalk's Mechanics Files... in 1998.. used that mechanic, then his son in law, for 19 loving years, and my mom still uses his son in law for major work).

The DX was a basket case. I bought it from a mechanic at a Honda dealer - he said it was a trade with a blown head gasket - he had the full service history on it (chronic overheating issues from day 1, 1 owner car, handed me a pile of service records for it), he dropped in a junkyard motor and new AC lines to flip it. 30 minutes after buying it, one of the AC lines popped out of its fitting. He told me "you're not supposed to run the ac on the highway". :fuckoff: Got him to put another line on, it blew the line within an hour, so I gave up on the AC. It's only fitting that its eventual death was by overheating again.

The LXi was fun as hell, and needed very little work despite all the rust. Alternator crapped out halfway through a 10 hour road trip, but the drat thing still made it to my dad's house (alternator light would go off if I kept it above 3000 RPM, until the last hour of the trip when it finally went solid - amazingly it died turning onto my dad's street, and I was able to coast the ~1/8 mile to his house from there). The DX, well... it was a pile. But had that beautiful porn red interior.

Those popup headlights were awesome when they worked. The bushings were NLA by the time the DX died, though.

I qualified for free replacement with c series plates but to get those ones re-issued I would've had to get them as a vanity plate for around $300.

Worst part is they didn't let me keep them, I had to turn them in for destruction so now I have to go through life knowing that I didn't get to keep all my plates. :smith:

This is stupid. The government should appreciate patina!

Looking for some feedback from California goons or those familiar with California and goons with rental car thoughts. Mrs Heroic and I are flying down to San Diego a whale's vagina as a surprise with our older two kids. We have full massive Recaro harness seats for our kids 6 and 4 and don't really feel like flying with those things. We have a simple booster seat which is allowed in the state of Utah for kids 4 and older that we occasionally use for short distances. We are considering getting a second and just taking those for ease, does that work in CA?

Bonus question! I am considering renting a convertible Mustang because the kids are small and are obsessed with convertibles after riding in their uncles 4th gen Firebird convertible and the cool car would make the trip more memorable (and only like $40 more than a regular car). If the booster seats are not kosher in CA any issues fitting our Recaro seats in the back seat?

Sometimes insurance algorithms work out hilariously. A 1996 LS400 worth ~$2,5k can cost $700 a year in partial cover, while a 2003 Mustang Cobra costing like $13k costs a third of that for same coverage.

Why am I looking at that era Cobras....

Yeah, the pros will have the right materials and don't charge much plus the cost on glass or accidents if you DIY and screw up is huge on you. In saying that, you should get a factory manual to see spacing and spacers for airflow/drainage and watch the pro do the job because i)make sure they follow the factory manual (they may not because they don't read them), ii) it's something you need to see done a few times at least if in the future you want to DIY.

External SSD drive works out more cost effective when you are getting to higher capacities, plus I would trust a drive more than a card (evesor slightly)

SSDs need to be periodically powered on to retain data - leave the drive in a desk drawer or locked up in a safe deposit box for long enough and you'll lose all the data.

Spinning disks actually do a fairly good job of data retention over time, but I'd want to spin it up maybe once every other year or two and transfer the data off, format and transfer the data back again.

You might also look into M-Discs which are optical media that is supposed to have a substantially longer shelf life than your average DVD or BD-R disc. Available in both DVD and blueray, but this could get a bit spendy as the media is ~$3/disc, and even with BD-Rs you can only fit 25 GB of data per disc, so you'd need roughly ~40 discs per TB of data being preserved.

e: also keep multiple backups stored in multiple locations. Buy a couple of 2 TB notebook spinning disks, back up the data to both and keep one at home and the other in a safe deposit box or at a friend/relative's house.

I would have thought old style spinny hdds too. Get a 3.5" esata enclosure (well 2 because you want to make backups of backups), 3.5" because they're cheaper. Copy and put somewhere safe with dessicant or humidity and temp, store each at different locations if it's something more important than pirated media or something.

There's some tv that never got a decent home release or the music rights were never cleared so the official release is wrong.

Also we are scanning thousands and thousands of family photos. You would not believe how many photo albums my mother has.

Realistically I'm looking at maybe 2TB of total data. Everything else got deleted or will shortly.

Daria is like this. Fortunately, there's an unofficial pirate version out there that uses the DVD releases as the source but replaces the crappy soundalike music with the original soundtrack. Similarly, there's likely never going to be a release of the 3rd season of Pete & Pete on DVD because of music rights issues, which sucks.

Reading over that article it appears that they were correcting a previous presentation where they were saying SSDs in the correct set of (bad) conditions could experience data loss in as little as 7 days.

Their study does not appear to have checked what happens to a SSD that's been disconnected from power for several years, which is what I was referring to. If this is critical/irreplaceable data I'd rather not roll the dice.

Is this putting a screen into an empty hole, or swapping a screen? I DIY'd the latter, and it's getting the old one out and cleaning up the old adhesive that's a dick, getting the new one in with an extra person to help and the proper adhesive isn't so awful as to be an instant no.

Depends how much you'd be charged to just have someone do it for you. It's in that category of "manageable, but I'd not repeat the experience just for the fun of it".

With two cars to do, if they'll cut you a deal based on only having to come out once for both jobs, I'd pay them and be done with it.
