Not really because a) PS online was a loving trash fire so people hoped money would improve it and b) it came with free modern games.

When PS+ launched, you got Wipeout HD, which was 2 years old at the time, Rally Cross on PS1, and Age of Zombies on PSP. If Nintendo Online launched with free Fast RMX, Rally Racers, and Grandpa and the Zombies, as opposed to NESflix, I think people would probably just throw away their Switches and say that online was a lost cause forever.

Man all the free servers on PC games sucked a huge amount of rear end to get connected to before Steamworks made matchmaking easier. Remember having to search server aggregators? Remember Gamespy? Remember having to know the IP Address of your favorite TFC rotation? They still suck a huge amount of rear end on other PC platforms. Getting into a Battlefield 1 server was basically a dice roll every time unless you picked a nearly empty one on purpose.

I don't know what's stopping Valve from monetizing access to Steamworks, but let's not pretend it's a matter of principles.

I probably would have subscribed if that was the launch, assuming more games came monthly. Instead its online for a system ill probably never play online and games I drained all the fun from decades ago.

They aren't doing it because there would be massive shitstorm over it. Some big developers are already trying to move away from steam when they can get away with it too so Valve has incentive to keep their playerbase at least somewhat happy.

Fast RMX would be better than 3 nes games per month...hell, I might even go as far as to say it'd be better than 4.

Do you always have to choose a profile when booting up a game even if you only have one? I remember early on not having to choose, then a friend made a profile, which I've since deleted but I'm still stuck having to choose before playing. It's not really an annoyance, but is there a fix?

RE: Paying for online: It's lovely and stupid and I'm not happy to pay for online, but I'm happy that what we got is literally better than nothing. It's not saying much, but I'm an optimist and if they were going to charge, they could've done so without throwing us a bone. So at least there's that. Nintendo doesn't deserve accolades for that but again, better than nothing.

I wouldn't mind any sort of instruction manual, they're quick enough to learn, since there's not much to do, but still it could be better explained.

Nope. If you have multiple profiles you will always need to choose between them each time.

edit: Oh right, I missed that you deleted it. You can change that in the settings.

Not gonna lie, I kinda like the "seamless online integration into every single game" approach they went with but I'm also kind of disappointed that edged out the earlier "NES games but with online leaderboards" idea because that is also a good idea. I mean, I understand why they did it. Leaderboards would require actual editing of every single rom file, whereas allowing blanket online is much more of an emulation issue, but it still would be cool to have had.

Not really, for the most part it would just require the emulator to monitor a few memory addresses specific to each game to determine when the game is finished and what the score is. The actual game engine wouldn't need to be modified or aware of the online leaderboard.

woosh woosh
I think people are fine with paying for PS+ for the same reason they pay for MMO subscriptions. It's not what you can get right now, it's what you might get in the future. A steady trickle of games and discounts keep peoples pleasure centres stimulated just enough to keep them feeling like their subscription fee is doing some work, even if they don't like the included games that month or whatever. Every month a loot box with two games and some discounts drops, and our brains love loot boxes. Plus, it only takes a couple of bonus games to "make up" (in terms of perceived value) the entire cost of PS+ for a year, so it becomes a lot easier to rationalize.

On the other hand, Nintendo Online is a fee for something that most people already have been using for over a year, and no real value added otherwise. Once you pay the fee, your life goes back to the way it was before. That's basically the same experience as getting a parking ticket. It's no surprise people are reacting that way. If Nintendo implemented the exact same bonus game system as PS+, would it still feel like a rip-off? As long as there's some potential for the perceived value extracted from the subscription to exceed the actual cost of the subscription, then I think people would be a lot more willing to accept it.
