I'll Be Back and fuckit, Semper Fi

Remember what happened to the frigates we had, and those were able to defend themselves. The Gotaborg is essentially a mobile anti-ship missile platform which is neat for the baltic but... ech.

I'll Be Back is probably the best of the lot for workable airframes. The Mirage F1s are essentially 2000s in cosplay, think of them as Kfirs as they'd function about identically. The Terminators are interesting birds. Dedicated ground attack Phantoms with standoff capability thanks to the Popeye and even ALCM capability with the SOM A. They even get a penetrator bomb, neat.

Semper Fi gives us Intruders, jacks of all ground attack trades and masters of all. If it's on the ground and you want it dead, it'll do it. You have Harpoons, HARMs, Walleyes, Paveways, decoys, Mavericks and even the Skipper, a 500lb Paveway with a rocket booster because why not. Recce is also always welcome, the MQ-1Cs are identical to our existing MQ-1Bs except they get Mavericks instead of Brimstones. Who knows, maybe these ones will actually engage targets.

And now for the joke options

Sunday football gives us goddamn Tucanos with mediocre WVR A2A missiles and dedicated big fast Paveway droppers. Bleh. Best ground-based radar if you're interested in that sort of thing though.

Fishbed Ahoy gives us Chinese knockoff Fishbeds which are horrible (oh boy AIM-9Bs but made by Communists, I can't wait for these to fail off the rail or go after the sun and only the sun) attack helicopters and Fencers. The Fencers are actually pretty good, but the rest of this is rubbish. Very mediocre ground radar too.

Leverage would have been really compelling if they could have found SMTs. Oh well. The Fencers are the Soviet's attempt at an Intruder, trading away some stuff like the decoys and the Skipper for an afterburner. The MiG-29M is the first attempt at an improved Fulcrum, though how much of an improvement is debatable when the best A2A missile you have is the goddamn R-27.

Gote is absolutely terrible. First off, if you want 8 Swedish AShMs, we can have some Viggens printed, at least those might have a chance of surviving. When you're relying on Bofors guns like it's WW2 for your air defence, you might as well not bother. Kurnass is nigh-identical to the Terminator in I'll Be Back but with a longer-ranged ALCM, and the Jaguars are AMX-tier bomb droppers.

We want those Mirages, their MICA is the only decent A2A missile of the lot and the plane is a good all rounder too.

I'll Be Back and Semper Fi

Because Intruders are the best plane that we don't need.

Dr. Kyle Farnsworth
Apr 23, 2004

Semper Fi is a must. Intruders give us the desperately-needed dedicated strike aircraft that can haul some weight and take some damage, plus more drones.

I'll Be Back beefs up our ground strike with some Double Uglies that can throw Popeyes from range and the Mirages can shoot MICAs in air-to air. It's actually a nice little strike package on its own.

Uh, does the Delilah do what I think it does? Because that range + loitering ability seems fricken awesome in a A2G missile.

It seems so, but given the sorts of things you're likely to be targeting with an ALCM, loitering ability seems somewhat superfluous unless you're after a semi-deniable way to blow up Palestinians.

Semper Fi, Gote
I was thinking the F-111s would be more survivable than the A-6s, but the Intruders can carry HARMs. We're going to need those.
The Jaguars that come along with GoteBote carry ASRAAMs for defense. Quite a bit more range than your normal heaters... not a truly offensive missile like the MICA but it should be fairly capable of defending itself.

I'm not feeling it. The Tucanos are an excellent tool for a mission we're not currently doing and are otherwise not really set up to do. I don't want to be going into a big complicated SEAD operation and have to leave these guys on the bench, and there's no way we can risk them in an environment where they get shot at. The Aardvarks really only have one attraction over the other guided bombers we have coming out of every orifice and that's the Deep Throat. Settle down at the back there. If we need to blow up buried command bunkers, accept no substitutes. Otherwise, accept SPICEs.

2 - MQ-1C - http://cmano-db.com/aircraft/2579/
1 - AN/TPS-43 - http://cmano-db.com/facility/146/
This is much more my sort of speed. The A-6s carry a veritable kitchen sink of weaponry including enough stand off guided munitions to make me worry less about their subsonic speed. From memory the Harpoons would be better than any other anti-ship missile we have, more HARMs are always nice and the Skipper is such a kludge of a weapon that I can't help but love it. The surface search radar on the Intruder is decent too. The MQ-1s I could really take or leave now that we have a pair of Reapers, but since they're unmanned I have less of a concern about throwing them away on suicide laser designation missions when it's cloudy.

Five Su-24M2s is very tempting indeed. In functionality they're somewhat similar to Intruders except at twice the speed and leaking unidentified fluids all the way. The Hinds are going to be damnably hard to use given the pitiful range of helicopters in pretty much all circumstances, although if Gjader is threatened again the approaching forces will have to do better than some infantry and some battered old MBTs. The F-7As... are probably cheaper than TALDs and about as useful. By Ivanov standards this is a decent offering but nah.

This is a trap. It looks tempting because you get those Fencers and you also get some scary looking Fulcrums. Nyet. The Fulcrums have terrible strike capability and are worse BVR fighters than the Akefs due to their even lower numbers of horrible mid 80s SARH missiles. We've tested this time and again, SARH can't beat ARH with even vaguely similar ranges in CMANO. Essentially this option is one fewer Fencer than Fishbed Ahoy for no additional utility.

God yes. MICA armed fighters that can do a bit of precision bombing (the only ARH missiles we're being offered), sweet sweet Strike Phantoms with a wide variety of standoff kit. This is the one. Can we buy it twice?

The Kurnass are nice and Delilah does look like a fun weapon to play with, I'll definitely try it out during my radar review. However, the Jaguars are really pretty sad for a 2017 aircraft and the Gotebote is eight reasonably good anti ship missiles welded to a boat with all the survivability of a crisp packet full of nitroglycerin. I don't mind trading one of the two radars we'll get in this procurement cycle for a squadron of fast attack boats but I definitely mind trading it for one.

Nothing going on in my quiet corner of the Pacific.

This is the life. I'm just lying here in my hammock in Townsville, sipping a G&T.
Quick rundown of the radars:

AN/TPS-73 - Reasonably modern, although not as modern as our Master or the Long White search unit on our Sky Bow. A decent 3D air search radar, but we don't need one.

AN/TPS-43E - Almost exactly the same as the TPS-73 except less modern and therefore more susceptible to jamming. Still okay.

Spoon Rest P-18 - Old and bad 2D radar, probably more useful as SEAD bait than a radar given that these things are traditionally attached to SAM batteries.

Patty Cake HF - Genuinely horrible Height Finder radar. Technically synergises with any of the 2D radars to produce a whole 3D system. Practically does not.

PS-14 - Near useless 2D radar, highly susceptible to modern jamming.

Goteborg class bote - Honestly looking at the other non-aircraft assets on offer my opinion on the Goteborg has softened a little. It has eight good missiles and little else to recommend to it, but that's eight more missiles than these useless radars get us. It also has a late 80s ELINT suite with a rated 800nmi range, which is nearly as good as Tokyo Bay Fortress's early 90s ELINT suite. It will be sunk, it will not put up much of a fight when it does sink, it'll still be more useful to us as an offensive, go getting air wing than another radar to sit at home and irradiate any Albanian shepherd stupid enough to skyline himself.

Anyway, votes are I'll be back and actually Gote. Gote is the only package where I can see the utility of every option we're being offered. The Kurnasses are good stand-off strike planes, the Jaguars are mediocre LGB platforms but we get six of them so we can afford to play a little fast and loose with them and the Goteborg herself, for the reasons enumerated above, is a surprisingly good buy.

Semper Fi and Fishbeds Ahoy are also both good options if you prefer to think in terms of buying the headline choice and then accepting that it's going to come with some crap.
