Phone posting so I can't post it but it shouldn't be hard to find. There's a picture of Churchill visiting a ship and the first crew he greeted was the cat.

There are pictured of ship's cats wearing uniforms people made for them. Sometimes they'd be given ranks. Sailors took very good care of their cats. Just image search that poo poo and prepare for endless adorbs.
