yeah that is super obvious here in the big middle flat part of the country

when I was tending bar a regular was complaining about their retail job, about how so-and-so and whats-his-face did barely anything and they kept having to do all the work- but they blamed it on Obama and Millenials making the country more like communist Russia because "everyone gets paid exactly the same and so therefore no one works" = "socialism" in their minds

thankfully thats not really a thing with most of the under-50s

Having worked in research in the public as well as private sector, I would take public 9 times out of 10 even with the lower pay.

It is kind of luck of the draw. There are good and bad labs in both scenarios. Bad public sector labs and private sector labs are the same. poo poo pay, stressful, dysfunctional management, no work life balance, constant threat of firing. A good private sector lab is that but with better pay. A good public sector lab has the same bad pay, but is otherwise very laid back and pleasant... And usually you still get good benefits.

Same here. The DOE labs kick rear end for being chill as it can get while still working with dangerous poo poo.

Can I sell regular sugar with a label that says it has all effects of Oscillococcinum for a fraction of the price? I doubt the company that produces sugar pills would want to dispute my claims in court.

I love these arguments that somehow allowing price gouging would make people truck in more supplies in... the middle of a hurricane. They're always made by people who have clearly never actually experienced a natural disaster. If you've never been through a hurricane you might not fully grasp how everything society is built on shuts down for a day or two. All the electricity is preemptively shut off to most places, if you call 911 they tell you to stay in place and wait it out because emergency services aren't available until the storm's over, gently caress you can't even cross a lot of larger bridges since they're barricaded to keep people from getting blown off them.

But no, clearly if we let gas go up to $10 a gallon it means people will R&D up some amphibious mad max gas tanker trucks for that sweet sweet chance of making a tiny profit off the few people left who haven't evacuated.

I mean they actually do their best to prevent people from being on the roads in any form and it's a crime to drive for non-absolute-emergency reasons, not that anyone will be there to stop you.

However they definitely do get people to truck in supplies as soon as it's safe, and so price gouging usually can only happen in this tiny window right before a storm and right after it before the supplies start re-entering an area, which is why this free market solution is super ridiculous to me. They think there's gonna be some industry that pops up that requires massive capital investment to buy some sort of fuckin' stormproof amphibious vehicles to take advantage of the small amount of people who didn't evacuate and need help in this tiny sliver of time when normal methods can't help them.

Sorry I should rephrase. The government does get your tax money, but it's not nearly where the bulk of their spending money comes from - that comes from central bank loans the governments takes out. The main purpose of tax afaik is to get money out of the economy so nobody can hoard it (lol) because hoarding is bad for the economy
