after putting much thought into it i think i prefer much more season 1 american vandal's kind of critique of true crime over season 2's more high minded commentary on teens and social media (Also the crime in s2 was way more serious they might as well have just gone with the murder at that rate tbh)

I really hope this doesn't start a poo poo storm, please realize this post is in good faith.
There was a gassed thread "Get hosed White Supremacists" which was rightfully gassed because it turned into a total poo poo show.
However one of the first posts was someone posting the :pedophiles: smiley.

As far as I'm concerned Nazis, white supremacists, alt right, racists... can all get hosed with a rusty piece of rebar. However I've always respected groups like the ACLU because they go to bat for the right of free speech, even if it's completely contrary to the message of the group because it's what the constitution stands for. I forget where I read it, but it's "freedom of speech" not "freedom of speech that you agree with".

I guess I just have an issue with people completely shutting down anyone who doesn't support their viewpoint. The New Yorker pulling Bannon from that festival I think was a misstep because you could have actually had him have a good debate and be forced to explain his horrid views, instead by cancelling his invitation you just handed that alcoholic nazi a win.

I think my issue with it is while it seems that the "outrage" that is shutting things down seems to be favoring the left for right now, what happens if the pendulum swings the other way?

idk how you can look at the last couple of decades and think that it's the right wing's free speech that is under attack. your entire premise is flawed because it's a conservative argument to get people to hear them out so they can keep airing their horrible views everywhere in national media and getting converts

I get where you're coming from, and I'm trying to come up with a coherent response.

I think most rational people can agree that people spouting racist bullshit can get hosed. I also think that if a college deems that a speaker is going to be spouting horrible bullshit, they shouldn't invite him or her.
I think my issue is that once the invitation is sent and people get pissed off, instead of rescinding the invitation, make them fight for it. Get someone from the opposing viewpoint and let them debate.

If you just shut down the event, aren't you just allowing that person to pretty much claim victory? "They couldn't figure out a way to prove I'm wrong, so they just cancelled".
Prior to social media existing I don't think it would have been an issue, but now that people can enclose themselves in a bubble of people who think the same way, they can just continue to spout their beliefs without getting challenged at all.

On the other hand, is just by debating them legitimizing their viewpoints?

I don't know, but after Charlottesville, the national director posted this:

quote:

Second, and more directly related to the events of this weekend, there are important reasons for our long history of defending freedom of speech — including speech we abhor. We fundamentally believe that our democracy will be better and stronger for engaging and hearing divergent views. Racism and bigotry will not be eradicated if we merely force them underground. Equality and justice will only be achieved if society looks such bigotry squarely in the eyes and renounces it. Not all speech is morally equivalent, but the airing of hateful speech allows people of good will to confront the implications of such speech and reject bigotry, discrimination and hate. This contestation of values can only happen if the exchange of ideas is out in the open.
https://www.aclu.org/blog/free-speech/equality-justice-and-first-amendment

This quote exactly encapsulates the way that I feel. I'm just too much of a loving dolt to word it properly.

I absolutely disagree, giving vile views a platform like p much never leads to a such a debate you want. Doing so only helps normalize and spread vile views, as having such a platform in the first place is a form of endorsement. I feel like such choices are more about having morals than they are about simple political sides. And as much as one side tries to normalize like racial supremacy and such into being simply another ~partisan viewpoint~, stripping morality from how we should view such, its important we don't help them do so.

like I don't feel like advocating for, say, healthcare is in danger if we stop giving such racial supremacists platforms.

Sean Hannity is a gently caress stick, but that is exactly why I like the ACLU.

Again, I'm not arguing in bad faith. I'm not some secret right winger that's going to say "gotcha" or something. I'm just trying to figure out why debating lovely viewpoints is worse.

Why is racism/ethnic cleansing rational?

R. Mute

our national tv network has this one show where they do some deep takes on various issues, really the only (investigative) journalism in belgium at this point. they've done shows on various topics, but a couple of weeks ago they did one on schild en vrienden, an essentially fascist but until then just perceived as being identarian right youth organisation (perceived by the public, everyone in leftist organisations or in student circles knew this already) that loved to send death threats, stockpile guns, harass people, share racist/sexist/etc memes and praise various fascist regimes. they were astroturfed by some shady groups as well. it was essentially a showcase of just how hosed up they were, stripping away their thin veneer of respectability. it had an effect, resulting in various members of the organisation being kicked out of student representation bodies, as well as party lists for various right wing parties in the coming election. everyone was suitably appalled (took them long enough)

but even though it was definitely needed to finally get the powers that be to do something about the fash and as a reaffirmation that this behaviour is not okay, it still netted them 4000+ extra followers on social media (a lot for a youth group in Belgium). acceptable in comparison to the good it did, but there were plenty of articles before that just engaged them as they would engage anyone (and one that came after the outrage, ffs) - and those got them that exposure, that legitimacy, without any positive consequences at all.

even if 90% of the public is appalled by the ideas that they spout, open engagement with these groups will give them the exposure to reach the remaining 10%. and once they've grown, gained that legitimacy, they start to push on what's acceptable to the remaining 90% of the public.

the only way to deal with these people is to shun them, suppress them, make it clear that everything they do is unacceptable. and maybe the state isn't allowed to do that, but society is.

It's not? (In a questioning tone, I'm not saying it is rational).

Again, I'm not saying to invite every dipshit and crackpot that has an abhorrent viewpoint to speak. I'm saying that if you did decide to make that invitation, don't rescind it. Why wouldn't Bannon debating David Remnick have been a good thing? Bannon's views are abhorrent, and I don't think Remnick would have just allowed him to spout bullshit without calling him on it.
