If they actually tried, they could turn it into an MLM; a legal one, but they'd need an actual framework to place the ships in as value items. The main problem they have is one of _value_, in terms of how long it takes you to grind for anything, and whether there is anyone around to make the thing itself valuable. This has the knock-on effect of the _actual economy_ being entirely captured for them to control the _value_ of the assets being purchased.

In short, because they don't know how many people will play, they don't know how to value the unit time.

At this point in time the marketing is largely incoherent because it's based on trailing-edge scientology, or the concept of placing the adherent/acolyte within a structure that supplies inherent value, such as concierge, mile-high or having a printed card.

I'm gonna write a Teen Titans Go fanfic where Robin learns about Star Citizen and gets all excited about it. He convinces the other Titans to buy ships - Starfire even goes so far as to get "The Legatus" - except for Raven, who is suspicious of the whole thing.

Later on the gang finds out that a supervillain (or so he seems) named "The Warlord" has been spreading FUD about the game on the Internet. The Titans (except Raven) adopt many aliases (wink wink) to combat this online menace.

Eventually they make it to CitizenCon where Starfire is escorted to the VIP lounge to hang out with the "cool" nerds, much to Robin's chagrin. They reunite at the keynote, where Chris Roberts himself morphs into the supervillain, "The Hoover", whose handwaving is so powerful is causes a vacuum that sucks up everyone's cash. The Titans spring into action to fight him, and just when all seems lost, The Warlord bursts in and takes down The Hoover with his patented Coke Machine Cannon. The gang thanks The Warlord, who gives them all a new space game to play that is incomprehensible.
