Also, looks like that Mirage did OK in that NCAP test. Additionally statements about body-on-frame stuff being safe misses a lot of points. But that's about as serious as this needs to be taken I guess.

People with ample power at their disposal not using it because they’re poo poo drivers, and underpowered cars being dangerous, are two valid problems that are not mutually exclusive.

The Mirage did sort-of-ok in a relatively low speed test against a sled that’s 30% lighter than the average car on the road today.

The Accent, less well...

Who mentioned body-on-frame and what are you referring to?

You sideways brought up body-on-frame with CSB's truck.

I'm not sure what vintage of Mirage you're looking at - 2015 to 2018 are actually 4-5 star side impact rating. Calling that "sort-of-ok" is disingenuous, if you want to stick to hard facts and not appeal to emotion.

That's a fun to watch video but not really as terrifying as it looks. I googled one of the ones just for fun - the 2001 Elantra - and it was a 4-5 star car when tested. The Accent in that video is too. And yes there's lot of research going on about vehicle compatibility in accidents and work on how to develop coherent tests for it.

These are honestly kind of fun tests to do - if there were a decent career path I at the place I was at, I might have continued working there.

A problem solved as more and more new cars map 90% of the throttle to the first 5% you push down on it. Then "eco" mode only maps 70%.

And yet people still won't accelerate to match freeway speeds. Any modern car can do it but in my experience people are usually 10-20mph under traffic speed by the time they merge, which is 100% a driver issue, not a "insufficiently powerful car" issue.

Mirages surviving a layup side impact test not representative of the energy imparted by the average car on the road doesn’t make them any less deathtraps:

Re: BoF, no, I brought up mass. Mass of any kind will help your odds to survive a crash if you’re in the vehicle with more mass. Or as some person likely smarter than any of us about these things at MIT titled their article, Laws of Physics Persist: In Crashes, Big Cars Win.

A Lincoln Navigator or a Mercedes GL are both unibody and tip the scales over 6000 lbs. Either of those will be light years ahead of evens 20 year old BoF design in terms of occupant protection.

I mean, ok be mad dude, but you also live in the sticks. Doesn’t VA max out at 70mph limits, and at a lower altitude than my example above? What’s the closest 75 mph interstate to you? 80whp sea level in a NA 3000lb+ car here is dreadfully slow and simply can’t accelerate to the flow of traffic on the ramp.

Ps “keeping up with modern highway speeds” means ... exactly what it says - average speeds are significantly higher today than they were when your Volvo hit the road. Here’s a chart from 10 years ago for Albuquerque:

Y’all could stand to be a lot less hostile.

I can only speak for the UK, but most learners are taught in diesel cars and will change gear at 1500-2000 revs. Which is fine for driving economically, but the issue is in most cases they aren’t taught that revving the bollocks off the engine is fine if you need to get up to speed quickly. People seem to genuinely believe that it’s bad for the engine to take a car above 3000 revs. Who makes faster progress is less determined by who has the faster car, and instead is more about who is willing to use more of their vehicles available power band.

My friends who were with us on my recent road trip had a Citroen C3 with a 1.2l engine that made a mighty 82hp, and they coped with the autobahn and alpine roads just fine. All it meant was she had to keep the revs up and work the gears.

The guy's an editor writing on a huge number of topics so no, I wouldn't really assume he's smarter than any of us.

Look, I don't know everyone's background by heart. I worked doing side impact testing for about a year and doing accident reconstruction with my dad as an expert witness for about 5. My dad has his doctorate in the field and has worked doing accident reconstruction for over thirty years. I'm not an expert but I do end up reading a lot of the professional-level research because it's interesting and to help out my dad. Maybe you have a more in-depth background, I don't know.

Energy transfer in accidents doesn't really work the way you seem to think it does and yes, there's compatibility issues between SUVs/trucks and smaller cars but it's a lot more complicated than just mass/energy. IIHS and NHTSA are experimenting with how to test it well. I'm not even going to get into the difficulty of using population-level statistics to draw conclusions but there's a bunch of other conclusions you could draw from the same datasets you're flogging.

If you need to justify driving big powerful cars/trucks/whatever to yourself or your family on a safety basis, that's fine, but it's not necessarily correct.

Edit: Yeah, I'm done.

4x115.4 aka 4.5”. It’s been converted to GSL-SE suspension, hubs, and rear axle. The wheels are form my wife’s Spectra5, BTW. The Konig Rated Rs that used to be on the RX-7 are on the Kia. The ‘7 had brand new tires on it when I lunched the engine, and by some miracle they were the correct size for the Kia on wheels that would fit (205/50-16). In fact, I prefer the offset of the Konigs on the Kia, and the Kia wheels on the RX-7. The Konigs stuck out a bit on the ‘7, and the factory wheels looked a little sunk on the Kia. Swapped around, they are nice and close to flush on both.

Edit: current plan is to make it pretty much a GSL-SE with some upgrades. I have a thread here on it and my other projects.

Gas mileage is expected from a V8. I get about 20 mixed when I’m not driving like a fool. Once you push Sport mode it’s a different beast.

Ride is ok. The 08-10 models have a rougher suspension. It’s not bad for the type of car, it’s just a bit stiff. Getting different tires helped, but I’m thinking about going to coil overs.

I daily mine from April to October, and wouldn’t trade it for anything out on the market right now. 400 hp, Toyota reliability, and great styling (before the predator grill). It can be low key if you want, or turn heads.
