That’s basically the 1996 election in reverse. The problem Scott has is that he really has to convince people who voted Labor in 2016 to vote for him. I’m not really sure how he does that.

Investing heavily in building a solar farm to power the steel mill as well.

I'll reserve the excitement over Guthrie resigning/getting the arse until they announce who will be her replacement (i mean whoever comes after the interim guy they've already announced). If its someone who is just going to keep up the Foxification bullshit that loving snake Guthrie has been pushing then who cares if she's gone.

bandaid.friend posted:http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-09-24/whyalla-steelworks-how-a-town-saved-itself/9984998 I'm in Whyalla. The reality is wages were inflated, a hold over from when we were part of BHP to get eastern states people to move and stay out here long enough to have an impact. People used to rotate in and stay a year or two for the extra money then head back home east, unable to handle country life. The cost of living has historically been pretty cheap here and the inflated wages let things happen like a electrical technician buy up 11 cheap rental properties (ex housing trust) and landlord it up, which had a flow on effect for lower income people's housing. The local housing market has inflated in the last 15 years, cheap housing trust houses were snapped up and demolished, and developers subdivided the land to make overpriced, cramped cookie cutter houses. I'm interested to see how they spin what happened here but at least part of the problem was people going into debt during good times for things they couldn't afford during lean times. A 10% pay cut was quite doable over no job at all and being saddled with debt and an unsellable house that no one would buy if the steel works went belly up. I know at least one dude killed himself rather than face that. At some point the steelworks was making more iron ore pellets than they could process and selling them to other manufacturers (ie shipping to Japan), letting companies who could make steel cheaper than us flood the market and tank prices. Short term cash grab having long term adverse consequences. I don't know if the people who were making decisions like that are still working in management at the steelworks or if they were Arrium people or people who jumped ship when OneSteel wasn't doing so well (after paying themselves a large bonus). The new owners have some interesting ideas and there's a fair bit of iron still in the ground so who knows how long it will last from here.
