If the LNP do win the upcoming election then IMO Australia is completely hosed. They've become bolder every year they've been in government and with another term they'll without a doubt crank the poo poo to 11 million.

That’s basically the 1996 election in reverse.

The problem Scott has is that he really has to convince people who voted Labor in 2016 to vote for him. I’m not really sure how he does that.

quote:

The South Australian town of 21,000 people was on the verge of collapse. Crippled by $4 billion worth of debt, the steelworks' owner, Arrium, had gone into voluntary administration. The jobs of 3,000 employees hung in the balance.
In desperation, employees took the radical and unpalatable step of accepting a 10 per cent pay cut to make the plant more attractive to new buyers.
In doing so, they caught the eye of an enigmatic British billionaire, Sanjeev Gupta, who has turned around the town's fortunes.

...

Ms White remembers the day in July 2017 that it was announced Mr Gupta's Liberty House GFG group was buying the steelworks for an estimated $700 million and had committed to keep its 3,000-strong workforce.
"I was ecstatic. It was a weight off my shoulders. All of a sudden we have a future," she said.
In September 2017, Mr Gupta flew into town on his private jet and accepted the keys to the steelworks. Then, in a dark suit with a waistcoat and pale red patterned tie, and flanked by workers in high-vis gear, he led a march of locals down the town's main street to celebrate. Afterwards, he joined the community at a barbecue.
"I've never got, done anything like that before. And again it signified the emotional connect those people have," he said.
He said the workers' decision to take a pay cut was instrumental in his purchase process. "Whatever it took, they weren't going to let this die. That gave me a lot of confidence that, if I bought this business, I would have a great force behind me to turn [it] around," he said.
It's great everyone's keeping their jobs but it's not nice people are bidding themselves lower, in the hope they become profitable enough for someone else, so they'll be able to eat

For an industrial billionaire Sanjeev Gupta actually seems like a decent guy with a history of treating those working for him well. Investing heavily in building a solar farm to power the steel mill as well.

I'm in Whyalla. The reality is wages were inflated, a hold over from when we were part of BHP to get eastern states people to move and stay out here long enough to have an impact. People used to rotate in and stay a year or two for the extra money then head back home east, unable to handle country life. The cost of living has historically been pretty cheap here and the inflated wages let things happen like a electrical technician buy up 11 cheap rental properties (ex housing trust) and landlord it up, which had a flow on effect for lower income people's housing. The local housing market has inflated in the last 15 years, cheap housing trust houses were snapped up and demolished, and developers subdivided the land to make overpriced, cramped cookie cutter houses. I'm interested to see how they spin what happened here but at least part of the problem was people going into debt during good times for things they couldn't afford during lean times. A 10% pay cut was quite doable over no job at all and being saddled with debt and an unsellable house that no one would buy if the steel works went belly up. I know at least one dude killed himself rather than face that.

At some point the steelworks was making more iron ore pellets than they could process and selling them to other manufacturers (ie shipping to Japan), letting companies who could make steel cheaper than us flood the market and tank prices. Short term cash grab having long term adverse consequences. I don't know if the people who were making decisions like that are still working in management at the steelworks or if they were Arrium people or people who jumped ship when OneSteel wasn't doing so well (after paying themselves a large bonus).

The new owners have some interesting ideas and there's a fair bit of iron still in the ground so who knows how long it will last from here.
