I'd say its one of the major reasons "gamer culture" became so toxic, the misogyny and sheer sense of entitlement was all laid out in the open all the way back then.

Lol yeah. And I think it didn't really change out of any purposeful shift all those companies just went out of business like 90% of the entire print based industry did

yeah. thinking about kids growing up with that as their barometer for normal i can kind of get why things ended up where they are now. i wonder if any of the editors of those magazines look back and go 'what the gently caress'

if they'd translated all the badass early otome games for the ps1 and stuff, video games would have been saved

Having a little sister who played games kinda had me puzzled why some people considered it a "boys only" thing

My mom was obsessed with Dr. Mario and Tetris when she was on maternity leave with my sister, it’s the only thing she would do when the baby was asleep. I credit all my obsessive habits to her.

My mom played SMB when I got an NES, and then would eventually buy a DS for herself. She mostly played Rhythm Heaven and card and casino game collections.

I gave her my copy of Animal Crossing, but she didn't like it because it was too slow.

it was cool when everyone's understanding of vivian in ttyd was "in the jp version she's actually a guy!!!" because nobody would actually properly translate the relevant dialog and everybody was a dumbass

I remember when I was a kid my neighbor's parents would only ever buy her the most girly-girl licensed ~~GuRl GaMeS~~ ever. Like Barbie Horse Petter '95 or some poo poo. They were all just...so bad. Like not even attempting to be a game, here is a picture of a horse and you can click it to do a little combing animation and maybe it walks to the right and that will be $40 please. Thankfully I had real games and we could just play at my house. So I guess my view re: girls/gaming when I was little was that other girls had loving terrible taste in games if that was the stuff they go for.

And then I grew up and found out no one of any gender liked any of that stuff and it was in fact just bad.

I suspect a decent portion of the origin of it is that when Toys R Us had to put NESes on their shelves, they had to put them on the boy shelves or the girl shelves, because the toy industry is hosed up.

Yeah this is what I heard all those years ago and I chalked it up to "boy Japan sure does like weirdly effeminate men haha!" because my basis of comparison was like, final fantasy

I'm glad that it was something better than that
