STUDENT politics at the state’s second largest university have descended into farce after an independent tribunal found recent elections for the QUT Guild were “not fair nor democratic”. The guild’s executive announced the nomination period for recent elections with a solitary poster on a “noticeboard in a seldom trafficked corridor”, an independent tribunal found. After leaving the notice up for the mandated period of “at least five days”, the executive, who run a joint ticket known as Epic, announced they were returned to power unopposed. At least three blocs of students, including a group of socialists, were outraged as they were all poised to challenge Epic and had been eagerly waiting for nominations to open, vigilantly monitoring the guild’s social media. Observers had been predicting Epic were facing their biggest challenge in years. The challengers appealed the election results to the guild’s electoral tribunal, an independent body made up of three lawyers. On Friday, the tribunal delivered a seven-page decision that ordered new elections for October 31 and was scathing of the guild executive. “We are satisfied that the student body was denied the opportunity for a fair and democratic election whereby a range of candidates could offer themselves for election,” the tribunal found. They said it was “curious” that the minutes of two guild meetings before the election “were silent” as to any discussion of the election date. They rejected guild secretary Emily McIntyre’s evidence that the election date was in “her sole power or discretion”, finding it was her duty to consult and inform about the date. The tribunal said placing the notice outside the guild office was “insufficient” to inform a student body of almost 50,000 across three campuses. “No explanation, however, has been provided why neither the secretary nor the president would not have, in similar terms, properly and prominently advertised that there was to be an election,” the tribunal found. Guild president Isobella Powell and Ms McIntyre released a joint statement on Wednesday morning denying that the guild executive was responsible for the mismanagement of the election. “The returning officer is solely responsible for conducting the elections, which includes posting the notice of the election on the guild noticeboard,” they said. “Any suggestion that it was the guild executive who provided the notice of the election is false.” They also provided two screenshots of posts on the guild Facebook page taken on August 6 and August 10 notifying respectively that nominations had opened and then were about to close. “It is unreasonable to accept a view that the parties were diligently monitoring social media, especially considering the guild election regulations clearly specify the timing of notice and and nomination periods,” they said. They also pointed to the fact that one other nomination had been received for the elections however the returning officer had declared it invalid, a decision upheld by the tribunal.

So has the ABC taking heavy advice from the government to sack journalists who do good stories something that's happened before? I swear the charter prevents it.

Honestly I'm somewhat surprised at how fiercely the Coalition is attacking the ABC, to the point of openly expressing their intentions to sell the whole thing off. It's an issue that could shake quite a few rusted-on Liberal voters to switch to preferencing Labor.

ABC chairman Justin Milne is under pressure to resign after Fairfax Media revealed he told former managing director Michelle Guthrie to "get rid of" high-profile presenter Emma Alberici. Outraged ABC staff will meet at the broadcaster's Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane offices at lunchtime to discuss their response. A draft motion being circulated through the newsrooms calls for Mr Milne to "publicly acknowledge whether the political interference suggested in the emails is true and if so, immediately resign from his position". Senior Liberal ministers are also of the opinion that the chairman's role is untenable. Shadow communications minister Michelle Rowland called Mr Milne on Wednesday demanding an explanation for the "extraordinary situation", saying the ABC's integrity had been compromised. Ms Rowland was not satisfied with the response and Labor has left the door open to demanding his resignation. Blood for the blood God

The ABC chairman, Justin Milne, vehemently opposed moving the Hottest 100 away from Australia Day and tried to convince the ABC board to reverse the Triple J decision, saying “Malcolm [Turnbull] will go ballistic”, Guardian Australia has been told. Multiple sources have said that the former managing director Michelle Guthriesupported the Triple J decision, which was taken after a year’s consultation, and convinced the board not to bow to pressure from the government.
