His skill is there and great, but I don't really care for his sense of aesthetics if that makes sense. The plot, writing, dialogue, pacing–everything other than the art was absolutely awful. The Metabarons feels more like a fluke now than anything. I'm very put off from trying anything from Jodorowski again. Before the Incal is leagues better than The Incal. The art isn't quite as good, but it has a much more interesting story and actual character development to make up for that. Final Incal isn't half bad either.

A year or two ago I got the first issue of the Incal for Free Comic Book Day and loved it. I finally read the full Incal not too long ago and it definitely did not live up, to either the FCBD preview or what I was expecting from when it got discussed on Jodorowsky's Dune.

The Wicked and the Divine 1373AD is out, and it all but confirms a theory I've had for a while. Minerva incarnates as a child because she becomes a vessel for Ananke if Ananke dies. Then she spends the next 90 years getting old again. Also the story gives away a hell of a lot about the metaplot, so don't read it if you haven't read at least as far as Imperial Phase.

I liked it okay, though it was just world building. It didn't really give any space to plot, so I have no idea how it'll be from this point on. I think in that linked interview, she's pretty much telling you not to expect much non-binary consideration in the allegory, "this is a specific story, about a specific experience" (ie: her own, her daughter's), but who knows. Yeah, it was the first issue, so it was mostly world building. Although they did show the relationship between the father and the daughter characters. It was pretty good, had a Sex Criminals meets Bitch Planet vibe to it. (Not that difficult considering that they had a Bitch Planet poster in the background of one of the panels). Also, I feel that of course people who are transgender aren't going to like it. The book is lovely to 51% of the population, that's the point of the book, it's a dystopia. They put drugs in the water supply to gently caress with the natural processes of the female body. A government like that (that calls itself "The Ministry of Defense" or something) sure wouldn't give a poo poo about trans people. Transgender Look no offense but tbh if you cant even get the terminology right and youre not understanding the critique its not meant for you and thats kinda why i said it was for my fellow queer posters in the first place

I feel like if in the process of writing an allegory about a specific experience you wind up creating a scenario which is wildly offensive to a different experience the onus is on the author though. League of Extraordinary Gentleman, especially Century, is wildly allegorical, as is Promathea, and almost everything about sex in both is either allegorical in an old-school esoteric sense or just dumb lad humor-- that doesn't give it a pass. It's somehow even worse to me that Cain acknowledges considering NB and trans valences of this setting and just deciding it doesn't matter.

Yeah, especially given that, even though she says that it's a specific theme and experience, she describes that theme and experience as 'womanhood' really consistently. Which definitely seems shittier given she even briefly acknowledges that the experience she's describing is more (binary) sex than gender anyway... It's just like, she took a conceit that seems like a trans narrative and turned it into a trans-exclusionary one. Not a great look, and kind of colors the 'Ask Me About My Feminist Agenda' shirts. The Jesus stuff was pretty on the nose but it I find that it works pretty well. Also happy to see that Leah finally has that leg back. And that the Americans are smart enough to not deploy Siegmund against his former nation. Tokyo is pretty messed up already at this point due to fire bombings, but I'm thinking his objective is probably to take the Emperor hostage.

I think Uber has been plagued from the beginning by art that is considerably trashier than the scripts, and it makes enough moves that feel in dubious taste that I'm honestly not sure whether, in the long run, I'll consider it good or bad, but it's addictive and as with most Gillen projects definitely a sharply written project that makes risky but smart moves with its premise.

Invincible was as much of an extended soap opera as most superhero comics except with less inhibitions about gore and so on, thus the story can get ridiculously convoluted and lose some steam at certain points, but the characters were usually fairly strong for most of the run. It also ended pretty well, which is a bonus.

Über was gore-porn mostly early on IMO, especially when Canaan White were drawing stuff... Currently I don't think it's really that bad. It's violent, yes, but mostly to the point. And the goriest part in this latest issue had a very clear visual point, IMO.
