i'll give SAO this superlative: it's the rare type of franchise where a loose spin off made by a team with apparently very little respect for the original actually improves it significantly

I don't think that's really hate watching. I feel affection for all the weird movies like Troll 2 and enjoy myself so I can't really call it hate. I also think on some level they're good movies, because they entertain us and bring us together.

also a movie is way shorter than a multi-season show

there is a sustained effort that goes into watching terrible shows and I cannot muster it nor even understand why people do it

If anything should be hatewatched, it's Accel World, so you can hate that they kept making SAO instead (second cour is still also kinda poo poo tho and I have no idea what kind of storylines come after).

I've watched a bunch of the mst movies sans mst at some point cause a lot are super bizarre and lovely and the riffing gets in the way more than it adds to me.

Aincrad arc is fun if a bit trashy, and has a few interesting things going on in it. The second arc was really unremarkable imo except for the final fight in the parking lot. That fight's a really clumsy slugfest cause it's happening in real life. I just rewatched it and was actually super invested even without the full context, that part rules. I haven't seen much of the third arc, but if this latest season is roughly as good as the first one I'd gladly jump in again.

also watching weirdly made/written shows with friends is fine and enjoyable but i feel like its more interesting/fun to think about and talk about what the writers/animators/whatever were probably trying to do and the areas where they succeed and stuff like that than it is to go 'heh this is is SO bad' for *checks notes* 52 episodes

School Days subverted the way visual novels get adapted: instead of using the canonical path or one of the numerous good ends, it chooses one of the bad ones resulted from a horny player making all the choices that could potentially lead to H-scenes. That deconstructive gesture is quite hollow, though, because it doesn't actually say anything remotely compelling, basic craftsmanship is severely lacking, but, unfortunately, not to the point of unintentional near surrealism of Toei's Kanon, and, to add insult to injury, the bulk of School Days anime, if we take it as some kind of satire (lol), is 'bad on purpose', which is like the worst thing ever.

IIRC didn't School Days take multiple endings and string them together to make an interesting combo ending? I thought that was kinda nifty thing to do for an anime adaptation, at least.

Nah, that's not actually that uncommon (see Mari Okada's FSN, Tsukihime (lol), arguably Clannad, Kanon (both versions), etc.) As far as adapting a straight up bad end, even as a bonus material of some kind, I'm drawing a blank here.

Mind you, that doesn't mean that School Days is anything more then a terrible, overlong hentai OVA without an actual porn.

I went through the list and ended up with a bunch of shows that I'm at least remotely interested in, but no real must-sees. I'll probably end up dropping 3 or 4 shows based on the first couple of episodes. In approximate order from most hype to least hype:

Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara
Bloom Into You
Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru
Sora to Umi no Aida
Release The Spyce
Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san
Zombieland Saga
Double Decker! Doug & Kirill
Toaru Majutsu no Index III
Tsurune: Kazemai Koukou Kyuudoubu

Also season 3 of Attack on Titan, and various OVAs.

Overall impression that it was OK. Nothing amazing but decent S3.

Alright, looks like I'm back on board. The show's at its strongest when it's showing how genuinely hosed up the SAO survivors are, and after six episodes of GGO I assumed they were just kinda done with that.

As for School Days, I thought the anime was insanely funny in a super edgy and stupid way, and when I played the VN I found out you can be even stupider. Like really just a loving idiot. Look how many ways there are to be a loving idiot in School Days lol

At one point you can go on a date with one of the girls, and there's a choice of movies. Standard horror, action, romance, etc, but there's also what is basically a movie for preschoolers. If you pick it the protagonist is hooting and hollering in the theater, screaming and having an incredible time, as the girl sits there staring into the screen with a completely vacant expression.

It's a fairly trashy game in terms of plot, but with the sheer number of stupid choices you can make, and the horrific consequences that result, it's one of the more interesting B-listers I've played.

Oh yeah, for stuff that's actually relevant to the thread, I'm gonna finally check out Thunderbolt Fantasy. Urobuchi always seems to hit the notes I like.

Being part of Toonami might make watching bad stuff easier since you’re only watching one episode a week, as part of a larger block of shows that are actually good, and making kind of a fun weekly thing of it. It’s really fun and not at all much different than those other things you’re listing.

I’m starting to wonder if I should put together an SAO simulwatch/live-chat thread to show you all what a good time it can be. Like maybe we sandwich it between a couple of good animes or something.

IMO if it entertains then it's good. There's a lot of anime out there that are just boilerplate nothings and completely uninteresting, so while I see what you're going for I just wouldn't call SAO bad. Though now that I think of it I'm struggling to think of an anime that I found to be straight up poo poo so maybe I'm the freak here.

I'm gonna preface this post by saying that I haven't read this arc in 2 years and that I'm currently unable to give any notations due to the fact that my daughter has all my SAO novels. She also has all my Chaika and Boogiepop novels but that's a whole 'nother ball of wax.

Overall, I'd say it's definitely less crappier than ALO and mostly better than GGO (meaning the Kirito/Sinon arc, not the one focused on Pink Murder Rabbit girl and her "harem" of beautiful social maladroits), but it still went on for longer than it should've and you could potentially cut 1/3 of the volumes in content at minimum and you'd still more or less get the same catharsis. Currently, out of the 20 "Mainline" SAO novels available in Japan, it lasted from volumes 9 to 18. That's half of the current publication life of this series.

The Alicization anime that's scheduled to start airing in 9 days will supposedly cover all of it through a 48-to-52 episode, 4-cour "odd/even" season schema (i.e. You get to watch Kirito's adventures on a weekly basis through October-December, but you get to rest on January-March and so on, or at least that's what we know).
