I actually like fighting late game orcs. Bog them down with your normal guys, hammer through their armour.

Once you fell a couple of them they all fall or run pretty fast.

Warlords are assholes but also seem to rarely carry shields and my guys get the real good crossbows for those fights. Taking that fucker down is almost a free win.

I like them. I run ranged/polearm heavy these days (5 man backrow) and if its something like two small entrances, you can have four people on each entrance with 2 backline supporters with each.

If the enemy can only engage you 2 at a time and you have 6 people ready to stab, you really start winning. I only hate them when I don't have any ranged up.

You're completely at the mercy of the RNG for the layout though, and God help you if you're fighting undead, and the necromancer/Ghasts spawn in areas that are almost impossible to reach or shoot at.

In my last playthrough, day 11, the layout places my two archers right next to each other on the outside of my group, and 3 direwolves engage them before anyone on my team can act.

If you mean for full on ambushes, yeah you're pretty hosed and depending on RNG.

Normal forest fights are like any other fight but slower. Find a good spot to fight from, take it, make them come to you.

Orcs are my favorite enemies to fight later on because a lot of different builds and weapon types are useful against them and there's not a lot of RNG bullshit involved in fights against Orcs. Occasionally a pair of injured, wavering and overwhelmed Berserkers will double tap your veteran Duelist with Iron Lungs for lethal damage in two sub-20% CtH swings, which is something I'm totally not bitter about. But usually those fights are challenging but entirely fair.

Goblins on the other hand have Shamans and Puncture.

And all other regular enemies aren't challenging post crisis. Ancient Dead just don't do much anymore. Necrosavants are a complete joke once you can send 12 melee bros in 200+ durability armor, most of them with Battle Forged, in against them. Legionaries and Honor Guards do enough armor damage to probably force a bro to retreat per fight but bailing a single bro out is easy against them since they stay in formation. And ultimately they're not hard to damage race for a late game company.

But that's really more of an issue with the game not having a lot to do besides grinding for the 47 enemy fights after the first crisis is dealt with.

On that note, the one fight I ran into with a late game company that I felt was unwinnable without getting extremely lucky was the one against the Davkul cultists you get the helmet from. There were around 30 of them and they didn't look like much since they're all just in sackcloth-wearing guys with low value weapons. But the cultists come with Dodge, Nimble, Overwhelm, Mastery perks etc. and their weapon selection includes daggers. Intense shanking followed.

I am a mouth, and I must scream

Can anyone explain to me how the armour ignoring portion of damage is supposed to work? Because when I shoot orc warriors with my crossbow, which says 50% of its damage ignores armour, they take a scratch to their armour and their hitpoints stay at 100%. In fact can anyone explain crossbows to me at all because it seems people in this thread talk about them as if they're great vs armour but mine seem to bounce off it harmlessly.

http://battlebrothers.wikia.com/wiki/Combat_Mechanics

Essentially, after armor damage is done, you multiply the damage roll with the Ignore Armor percentage. So let's say you rolled 60 damage on a crossbow shot, meaning 30 get through. You then subtract 10% of the remaining armor of the target from that. And since Orc Warriors can start at 400 and crossbows aren't good at destroying armor, that number can easily be >30.
What that boils down to is that crossbows are good at killing targets in medium armor but don't work that well against really heavy armor.

They're not as good against orcs in heavy armour, but they're way better than bows and if you have the relevant perk its an additional 20%, which is enough to start stacking debuffs and injuries (i run crippling strikes on all of my archers/xbows)

E: You also need to hit them a few times. Full armour will stop the first hit, it won't stop the second completely, the third will gently caress it up.

The game very much doesn't tell you this, but 10% of the enemies remaining armour value (in that location, head or body) is deducted from the direct HP damage - the formula fresh off the wiki being ((base weapon damage x ignore armor modifier) - 10% of current armor), here.

So, e.g. if you would expect 20 damage to ignore their armour but they have 200 or more armour remaining, nothing will go through to the health.

This also means that as armour gets more battered over the course of a fight, it gets less effective at blocking the direct-to-hp portion.

I was trying to find BB videos of the cultist fight but came across one of a guy who fit out most of his company into hybrid 2-hander/polearm/shieldtank users.

So, regarding the chat a few pages back about how it's important to specialise you can get around it if you play for 1400 days.

While there is no way I would grind for that long I appreciate that this game has fans who are willing to do so.

New run started yesterday, and boy it’s been a good start. I found three wildmen (2 of which were level 2 at recruitment) all for less than 800 each and all with excellent stars and traits, all in the first 10 days! Meanwhile my starter bros are all decent enough to keep in the long run, and my other guys are a caravan guy with good defensive stars and a flagella that isn’t very good but is just a placeholder until I can get a better banner/sergeant guy. I also have a very mediocre poacher who’s just a placeholder until I can afford a hunter.

I have never gotten off to such an incredible start. Usually I have a slow start due to struggling against raiders as I burn through farmers, brawlers and thieves who just can’t handle a fight long enough or get dismissed for having awful level up prospects. Being able to get those wildmen so cheaply changed my momentum completely. 3 cheap recruits with excellent base melee skill right in the first two weeks is incredible, the raiders can’t stop them. Money’s been tight the whole time but I am still making very rapid progress in equipment and already have 10 sets of basic mail shirts and a handful of kite shields I got from killing raiders.

For further recruits, what is your opinions on deserters? They have solid stats but obviously they will be worthless against the undead. I prefer squires and militia men but those deserters still look tempting at times.

vyelkin
Jan 2, 2011
Deserters are hit or miss. Most of their stats are decent for their price but once you reach the late game hit the level cap they're never going to be quite as good as your other bros because one (or more!) of three things has happened, all a result of their very low starting resolve: either 1) they still have really low resolve and thus break easily; 2) their other stats are a little lower than they should be because you had to pump a lot of level ups into resolve; or 3) they have one fewer active perk than some other bros because you took Iron Will to shore up their resolve.

You might hit the jackpot and get one with three stars in resolve, or who happens to roll good enough resolve at the start that it isn't a big issue. You might not. Worth a try if you have the money to throw away, but there are usually enough squires around that I don't bother.

I did get a free deserter from an event though and now he's a reliable greatsworder so anything can happen.

Any reason not to recruit Bastards? They seem to be almost on par with sellswords most of the time, and cost a fraction of the price.

Also, are there any backgrounds you should just flat out try to avoid solely because of events? I've never recruited a Killer on the Run again after I got an event where (I think) he killed one of my other Brothers.

Edit: I'd also like to say I'm not really a fan of how the enemy seems to magically know who your weakest dudes are, and rush straight for them. Makes it a bit hard to train up new recruits in the lategame.

Yeah same, once I'm out of the early game basically any bros with serious potential get to go in the backline with a polearm until they're about level 6 or 7. It helps keep them alive by keeping them out of the front line but also by letting them wear heavy armour right from level 1 since with a polearm it doesn't matter if you're down to 50 fatigue.

I occasionally check out Bastards, and this game I lucked out and found one with Iron Lungs, plus Fearless to help with the resolve issue. He was my first iron lungs dude so I kept him to use a pretty great unique orc cleaver I found. But yeah Bastards are a bit of a crapshoot.

Also I am apparently fated to never find a good witch hunter because goddamn every single one I come across has fuckall for talent stars.

I hire cheap Deserters specifically to find backup two-handers since they're happy to sit in the reserves and have decent defenses. That's about it, although they can potentially be good archers as well.

Bastards are a gamble because their stats vary a lot. Especially their Melee Defense. The default range for most backgrounds is 0 to 5, for Bastards it's -5 to 10. Considering how expensive Bastards usually are to hire I don't think they're worth it.

Yeah, i'ts important to clarify because for this game playing with / without savescumming is almost two entirely different games. A lot of guides especially seem to be written frontin' like they're for ironman play, but they're clearly by people who don't actually play ironman.
