Plus given how PVP tends to bring out the worst in balancing needs anyway Im glad the races which are limited-per-alliance dont have huge say on effectiveness of a build having one alliance stuck on ”hey the only thing your 3 races can do is stealth archer, period” would suck when a player after investing 100+ hours on his first character realizes his empire cannot pvp at all because lovely racial bonuses.

Race choice being super important just punishes people for not doing research before playing their elf simulator skinner box. Not to mention, MMOs have lifespans, and patches and such shake things up over time anyways. And hard faction divides in MMOs just prevent friends from playing together, which is lovely and dumb for a genre that struggles to get people to play together in the first place.

I mean, a hard faction divide can definitely work, but it's only really appropriate for a game that doesn't have any real significant PvE element. If the game is almost entirely about large-scale PvP with sieges, territory control, and that kind of thing, spread out across most of the game's zones, then a faction divide would make sense. You'd be going in knowingly picking a team, and presumably you and your friends would talk and make sure to pick the same team. But as soon as there's a real PvE endgame, you really need to rethink a hard faction divide, because presumably, your faction isn't going to matter as much for PvE, so now you're asking players to pick a team for PvE for, well, no reason. ESO currently handles this the right way. Faction only matters in the PvP mode that is specifically about factions battling to control territory--basically, it only matters where it makes sense. Everywhere else, we're all just playing a game together.

I'd say it's most likely those comments are coming from people looking to do vet trials, right? If you're someone who's not looking to raid or even do any vet content, it doesn't matter. There's hundreds of hours of content from the eleventy billion quests, globs of dungeons, delves, then not to mention the pretty princess crafting and fashion, where some 5% min/max stuff won't matter at all.

Actually, from personal experience, races don't mean poo poo end-game pve. I'm sure some of the more experienced end-game goons can verify that. Also, ESO forums are basically reddit v2, people complain about everything. One of the best tanks I know is a khajit, one of the best healers I know is a dunmer. Choosing the 'correct' races for your class/role will definitely help you get that little bit extra, but is not necessary in this game. It only really matters in some cases, and for the handful of top pve guilds which most of us don't even care about.

Considering trying this out at some point, but can I be a cat wizard? Also one that can sneak around and steal/pickpocket/open stuff, preferrably via magic (Telekenesis/Spells of Open). I guess what I'm asking is, do you have to pick either magic or stealth or can you do both? For group content, I'd definitely want to be ranged DPS and good at AoE, something I've grown fond of in my extensive WoW career.

For group content, I'd definitely want to be ranged DPS and good at AoE, something I've grown fond of in my extensive WoW career. there's no telekinesis but if you're PC-NA there's an add-on that let's you hotkey swap to stealthy gear for crime then back to spell castin gear for combat when you're done, that aside everyone can stealth though medium armor is best at it magicka nightblade has some abilities that help with stealth as well

I play a sorceror catman but build for stamina so it's all dual daggers and melee range hurricanes. Medium armor is best for sneaking but the nightblade class whether built stamina or magicka get benefits as do khajit themselves. It's pretty much totally viable.

stamina classes are kind of spellblade-y too for what its worth like stamina sorc is still summoning like a hurricane around them its just you're tapping into stamina to do it, not magicka or using staves

You can be a magicka Nightblade, which gives you a class with some built-in stealth and also plenty of ranged DPS and AoE potential. Magicka Nightblade is real strong and fun. Stealing, stealth, and stuff is pretty class-independent, too. Really any class can do a magic build, and any class can train up stealth and thievery, but Nightblade has class-specific invisibility skills and stuff like that so I think it's a good fit for what you're looking for.

Considering how broken the CP system is, racial choices matter very little, which I feel is unfortunate. I have healed the hardest content in the game on my Breton templar, and have done the same on my Dunmer and the difference is negligible. This has more to do with having an optimized group and how overtuned DPS in general, true, but it is what it is. On the DPS side, on the very highest min/max you are still looking at a tiny difference in damage between say "BIS" racials like Altmer or Dunmer magdps and say a Breton or Slaverace.
