Hey are there any good wrap up pieces about last weeks primary or podcasts.

I hate how theres wall to wall coverage for months, and then nothing about why and how people actually voted.

no rest for the weary on my end. in Brooklyn, dem chair Frank Seddio is working hard to scrape together proxy votes for the upcoming County Committee meeting, knowing that there is a reform coalition doing the same thing. in my assembly district, people got a letter from the assemblymember and the male and female district leaders urging them to send their proxies to seddio. however, the male district leader pointed out a couple of problems:

because it’s cheap for a reporter to call Salazar’s high school classmate to hear “yeah she lived in a palatial estate with servants who carried her to class” and expensive to get exit poll data and analyze it

quote:

Governor Cuomo visited Western New York today and brought with him a gift for the cash-strapped city of Niagara Falls.

“Niagara Falls is suffering and the state wants to do what it can do to be helpful.”

Cuomo announced he would advance to the city, $12.3 million. It is the amount of money Niagara Falls would have received in its share of revenue from the Seneca Nation casino.

The Senecas believe the revenue-sharing deal it had with state and local governments expired at the end of March of 2017. Since then, the Senecas stopped making payments. The city’s take of the revenue had become a vital to keeping the city budget afloat.

The Governor’s announcement was a complete reversal from a year ago. When asked last September whether state government would help Niagara Falls, Cuomo scoffed at the idea.

“They got paid when the state got paid, but why would I every guarantee their loss? You know, maybe they want to make up the shortfall to me.”

And then the Governor laughed as he walked away.

Falls Mayor Paul Dyster says that Cuomo quip never bothered him.

“Because we knew what we were discussing behind the scenes even at that time,” says Dyster.

Mayor Dyster said his administration has had many discussions about the Seneca dispute with state officials which culminated with today’s announcement.

The money is badly needed. The city faces a $13.9 million budget shortfall. Without it, Dyster says deep cuts and tax increases were being considered.

What a gigantic piece of poo poo this Cuomo guy is

it's the same as running for any other office: you have to gather enough signatures on an official petition. most county committee positions end up not having primaries, but sometimes they do. here in brooklyn, Rep Your Block ran candidates on their own slate, but typically you're on a slate with elected officials, judges, and district leaders. when i got my petitions i was on a slate with my assemblymember, who is a reform guy (he helped pass a rule at this meeting to ensure proxies can only go to someone in the same AD. hopefully it won't die in committee). i don't know if there are any groups up in Albany to take back the county committee but look into it, and form one if necessary

i swear i'll get to all the shady poo poo later but i got a dentist appointment soon. here's a taste of what's to come, though: the person coordinating the meeting, Marty Connor, was a state senator in what is now Brian Kavanaugh's district (lower manhattan and parts of williamsburg and downtown brooklyn). he was the minority leader and he refused to take the chamber for democrats. he was beaten in the 2008 primary by Dan Squadron, ten years before the current anti-corruption wave swept through this fine city. more recently, Connor was the election lawyer for the IDC

But, I mean, the Board of Election has forms for petitioning to be on the ballot when you're running for Assembly, Senate, etc. Where are the forms for running for the County Committee? And I don't remember ever voting for anything of the sort, even though I've been a registered Democrat since the 2017 (regional) elections.

Here's an exhaustive and probably incomplete list of the things that happened at last night's Brooklyn Dems county committee meeting.
  • The meeting was scheduled to start at 6pm, which was an inconvenience to people working or who need childcare.
  • It was in the auditorium of Kingsborough Community College in Manhattan Beach, which is at the eastern, subway-less end of Coney Island. There were carpools and a shuttle bus to take people to the college, though.
  • There was no official agenda or schedule of events.
  • The meeting actually started at 8:30pm. The stated reason was because it took a long time to get the proxies in order, but I suspect it was done for strategic reasons on the part of chairman Frank Seddio's group.
  • That's not to say that proxy counting wasn't well organized. Both the reform coalition (New Kings Democrats, North Brooklyn Progressive Democrats, and a few other groups) and the Brooklyn Dems were counting their proxies outside of the auditorium.
  • However, Marty Connor (the man who spoke at the meeting) blamed NKD specifically for the long delay, and said so on mic.
  • Frank Seddio was at this meeting, but he stayed on the sidelines.
  • Connor did not speak in plain English whenever he was announcing resolutions to vote on. This made for an awkward moment at the beginning when the reform-minded people, who made up the vast majority of attendants, screamed at him when he was simply formally opening the meeting with the same rules as before.
  • There was a microphone on the stage, but none for the people on the floor who wanted to speak... in a big auditorium.
  • Vote counting was non-existent and things were decided by Connor reading the room to see whether yes or no had more people.
  • Probably the lowest point of the night was when two slates of officers were announced: one backed by Seddio, one backed by the reform coalition. When most of the auditorium stood up as a "nay" vote for the establishment slate, Connor said that there were more proxies that gave their vote to Seddio and immediately declared that slate the winner. There was no vote for the reform slate because he preemptively called it.
  • Connor talked about how the rules for the county committee were on the Brooklyn Democratic Party website as a way to shoot down people trying to speak.
  • The angriest Connor got was when the male district leader for the 44th AD (my district) pointed out a rule of order to him.
  • There was a long recess where people from a particular judicial district went to a back room to discuss who to nominate for a judge seat there. This was not announced to the room, leading to speculation about whether the meeting was over.
  • Every single time a motion got support from most of the auditorium, Connor reminded us that it is illegal to vote in person and to have your proxy vote for you at the same time. In other words, he was accusing us of voter fraud.
  • Towards the end of the meeting, a woman managed to get a clear count of the total number of people who voted, the people who for the party slate, the people who voted against it, and the proxy counts for both of them. It was pretty close, but it was shot down when Connor rattled off the proxies given to district leaders. He then said "you lost."
It was an absolute clusterfuck and it makes me wonder how low they'll go when we have greater numbers.

Edit: I took so long that someone posted ahead of me. I'll answer that question soon, in a different post.

county committee seats, in practice, are usually filled by the assemblymember for that district. as a result, they're usually uncontested elections. furthermore, a member of the county committee represents a single electoral district. i can't speak for up where you are, but in Brooklyn, there are about 80-100 EDs per assembly district and each of them covers a few blocks, hence why the county committee drive down here is called "Rep Your Block"

apparently Amanda Kirchgessner in SD-58 is endorsed by Ithaca DSA. i think NYC might be getting some canvassing trips to help out but nothing is confirmed yet

as for SD-22: i read a Times article about the race there. far be it from me to endorse "Trump Bad" as a viable nationwide strategy, but when the voters in this district don't even realize that Marty Golden is a Republican, it might be a good idea to make the connection. i do like Andrew Gounardes as an issues candidate but i don't think his strategy of being Bay Ridge-centric and not hammering his opponent for being a Republican is going to work

imo the wfp has outlived its usefulness as a ballot line. it was a trailblazer in the "fight dems from the left" strategy but there are so many other groups across the country that are doing the same thing without the luxury of access to fusion voting

i learned a couple things yesterday about the future of brooklyn politics.
  • jumaane williams apparently lives in felder's senate district, so there's a minuscule chance they'll recruit him for the next primary. i doubt it's going to happen because he's definitely going to run for public advocate and i think someone from the orthodox community has to unseat him, given the demographics
  • there was a challenger in Steven Cymbrowitz's district for female district leader whose only noticeable quality was having tens of thousands of followers on instagram with the handle "flatbushgirl" (she lives in Midwood, but it's interchangeable with Flatbush in the orthodox community). i'm not sure if she's in felder's district, but if she is, i'd be fine with seeing her run. social media savvy counts for a lot, like it or not
  • my female district leader sounds like a combination of Roger Rabbit and Linda Belcher

I'll actually expand on that as well: he is pretty good on several issues and when i pressed him on my personal single hot button of M4A by tying it into his personal experience and privilege of Tricare for life, he didn't hem or haw about it. he pretty candidly said that his vision would be a similar program available to every person in the country and he spent some time describing and denouncing how useless health insurance is in practice.

of course... the process has now consumed his issues page about it and he's trying to get at it via markets / "competition" which just straight up lol.

he's also disturbingly USA#1 so his foreign policy position is utter garbage.

absolutely not. he made an ad a couple of weeks ago trashing de blasio. with that in mind, it won't surprise you to know that on the issues, he is a DCCC wet dream- he's as moderate as they come and he's a veteran. his campaign manager spoke at the Brooklyn county committee meeting saying that he doesn't take corporate PAC money, but considering his political stances that's probably bullshit

i also hate him for a personal reason. like my sister, he is a Wesleyan alum, and if he wins, my dad will bring up the fact that another one of those fuckers is in the news doing big things the next time my sister comes home. that school sucks in general because it's the school for children of the elite to pretend that they're not elite for four years, then going out into the world and becoming the elite. other notable alumni include Bill Belichick, Michael Bay, and Lin-Manuel Miranda

other people to not give your money to: Anthony Brindisi and Antonio Delgado. they are absolute d-tripping scum. i do suggest giving money to Andrew Gounardes, though. unlike Rose, he's good on issues- two of his priorities are passing the NYHA and instituting state-wide public financing of elections. i'm going out to canvass for him on the 20th in Marine Park, a neighborhood where he desperately needs to hit the ground in to win.
