I really hated Roanoke and it's stupid gimmick, then when the twist happened mid-season and I realized they were all going to get murdered: I was all in. The tv show inside a tv show inception was the stupidest thing for 6 episodes and I did not understand why they did it. Once I finally got it: oh man, they went hog wild. Great stuff!

I wanted Asylum to be my favorite, but they just couldn't quit: as has been mentioned upthread, they were still adding concepts in the penultimate episode...such a mess.

I had high hopes for Circus, since they went heavy with the Carnivale imagery, but was sorely disappointed.

I agree with you on these points about past seasons. I liked Roanoke for how simple it was.

I also really appreciated the slow, wobbly zoom out from an old-timey radio while an old song plays as well. It’s like Ryan Murphy asked his staff to gather material for an Apocalypse inspiration board and this was the episode chosen to represent Fallout stuff

Also apropos of nothing the Satan ritual was cool too. Hail Satan

Maybe the resurrected witches have the souls of the rest of the Coven in them. That would help explain how they couldn't be found and murdered by Langdon.

Coven was the worst season of AHS by a huge huge huge mile, but it was entertainingly bad. Aggressively bad. It couldn't keep it's own continuity straight for like 2 seconds. So the fact that 2 of the 3 that showed up were very definitively killed at the end of Coven is just hilarious. That said, I was actually amused to see them return because in this context they could be really entertaining in a good way, even if they never made sense in the other crossovers. (Like seriously in Hotel nobody cares that magic is real and proven?)

ED: Seriously I rank Coven along with like later-day Heroes in the incoherence department.

This is a great season to watch with my partner, who hasn't seen any AHS aside from a couple episodes of Hotel and a couple episodes of Roanoke.

Killing everyone in episode 3 and then Sarah Paulson showing up again at the end blew his mind. Its the best thing.

American Horror Story: Exposition is starting to turn out great holy cow

I was just saying to myself that the only way to save this season is to get rid of the stupid safehouse and focus on the post-apocalyptic stuff but I didn't think they'd go ahead and just kill everyone.

Perfection. Now all the Coven witches need to die before they gently caress the season up.

Also i'm fully on board for campy Mad Max. Billy Eichner dishing out scathing insults before blasting radioactive creeps. Hell ya.

I know right? Talk about playing against type; totally unexpected and awesome.

I made somewhat of a live-poo poo-post about this but I really got a Brad Armstrong vibe from him dealing with those scavengers/cannibals. Though I'll admit it's probably just the receding hairline, beard, and post-apocalyptic depressing-as-gently caress landscape that made me make that connection, along with the fact that I recently finished playing Lisa.

I loved the poo poo out of that episode until the coven (inevitably) showed up.

My wife actually jumped at the antichrist face scene and it was nice that the show was trying to be scary again.

Im pretty lukewarm on the witches in general, but maybe they’ll surprise me.

Anecdotal but everyone I talk to about AHS loves Coven and didn't mind Freak Show at all. It also feels like no one watched Roanoke or Cult.

Is the assistant girl supposed to be a character from Coven?

I can barely remember that season. What I remember the most is the bad guys, crazy jazz man, professional witch hunters that got very easily defeated and Lance Riddick.

I also thought Freak Show was very entertaining, so who the hell knows.

Watched half of Hotel, skipped Roanoke, enjoyed Cult and came back for this season.

Right up until their bodies did not move for like an hour, I was convinced there would be some last minute "Don't eat the apples!!!" moment. Was actually surprised they straight up killed everyone.

So, is Mead supposed to look like Bates' counterpart in Coven?

I figured when Langdon mentioned he used a woman from his childhood as the basis for her I figured he meant Jessica Lange.

Really surprised we didn't get a "don't eat the apples" moment and they just killed everyone off. Forget the mid-season twist: here's a quarter-season twist! Ba-bam! Kind of sad the purple kid's story didn't go anywhere, but at least they died holding hands (and throwing up blood)? :unsmigghh:

Coven versus Langdon looks fun. I am pleasantly surprised by how strong this seasons is: they are hitting the perfect balance of camp-to-horror and letting ideas sit for just long enough that they don't get stale, but I haven't felt like they are going full-Asylum and just throwing spaghetti at the wall...yet...

Come to me .... and live forever.
As soon as everyone died, my first thought was, "So they all become ghosts and we go on like nothing actually happened since they can't leave the premises."

They may still do that, but with witches that are supposed to be dead (including Myrtle who was supposed to be un-reviveable,) walking through fallout with perfect skin, resurrecting other witches with ease, it's killing what little tension they created. In the past, seasons really started to go downhill plot-wise when it was established that death doesn't matter and there are no real stakes.

Granted, we're talking about the Antichrist here, and Antichrist vs. Witches might be a worthwhile showdown if they establish the stakes go beyond normal life and death. Come to think of it, I kinda hope the demon from Asylum shows up somehow.

Oh drat I just thought of something.

Denis O'Hare would have been a shoo-in for that role. At the end of the day I'm glad it was Billy Eichner; he probably fit the role of husband to a Real Housewife of LA better and it was cool to see him play against type as I mentioned earlier (plus he's doing well with the role), but Denis O'Hare typically pops up as the Creepy & Dangerous Middle-Aged White Male in these stories. As far as I can tell it doesn't look like we'll be seeing Denis at all this season which is a shame.

It does, mostly because I suspect it didn't help the ratings going onward. That said, it was memorable in it's insane stupidity.

Secret bee attack! Minotaur rape! Personality roulette! Major characters killed off-screen! A witch being killed by a zombie that she had 100% control of 5 minutes ago! Witch hunters stupid enough to just come to a meeting with witches!

I could go on but that whole season was just what the fuuuuck.

ED: Also they killed the best character standing, Queenie, in Hotel. Not that her being dead seems to mean much.

Ah god drat it you're right. I completely forgot that this is a mashup season and all those killed off people are going to come back via Murder House. I was really hoping we were done with boring young couple, gay guys angry at their mom, and... drat I can't remember anyone else in the safe house that's how boring it was.
